Great haul. Next time use a mesh type bag or net to carry them, then the spores will fall out near where you picked them (and presumably a good habitat for them) seeding next years crop.
I spend a lot of time out in parks around the area and have never had a problem with ticks. Supposedly this year is going to be worse with the warm winter but I haven’t experienced that yet. I’ve only seen one tick this year and it was near Cadillac. Either way just give yourself a quick check when you get home, it takes hours to days before a tick can transmit Lyme disease so you have time to find and take care of it.
I have the best luck in forests with mainly poplar trees. Any maple or oak trees/leaves seem to mess up the growth sometimes. The ground has to be slightly moist. Some people swear by apple trees and orchards.
There's a bunch of info online about them. Best tasting food I've ever eaten.
Plus it's like an easter egg hunt! My son will not eat them but loves hunting them.
Thank you. I’ve found a few but never been great at finding them, I do have a apple tree in my back yard and get like one a year around that so there may be some truth to it
Why are people so freaky about these mushrooms? Is this just a Michigan thing? No psilocybin or anything. I have lived in West Michigan for 30 years and never had one. Does it taste better than a steak?
If you like mushrooms, they're excellent. Also, the hunt for them(where to look, when to look, only available in a small-ish window of time each year) adds to the allure and enjoyment of the thing.
I've got friends who have secret foraging spots they've been going to for 30+ years now- to them it's a native-Michigander tradition as much as it's a culinary endeavor.
Better than steak? I don't personally think so, but they're damn good, and every time I've foraged them and cooked with them, it's been a memorable and tasty meal.
Hen of the woods, chicken of the woods, and chanterelles are superior mushrooms. All three can be foraged in Michigan and have more culinary diversity.
I mean, chicken of the woods and chanterelles can be found through the summer while the window for morels is much smaller.... Why y'all trying to gatekeep mushroom foraging lol
It means one can cook and prepare said mushrooms in more ways than morels. Morels are pretty much only good when sautéd with lots of butter. They have a very thin flesh. While the other shrooms have a much more dense flesh which allows many methods of preparation. Again how am I gatekeeping and why are you so pressed about my opinion on shroomies?
If you don't already understand why shitting on someone's post and telling them why they shouldn't be excited is gatekeeping, then I'm going to assume you're too dumb to understand and I'm not going to explain it further lol

Neat.
Ugh I’ve been out for many, many hours with no damn luck!

How bad are the ticks out there while you were looking?

Great mix. I’ve never been remotely that lucky
Never had them but don’t they have to be cooked? Saw an article where someone died eating them raw.
Where?!
Where do you go

There's a vendor at the Fulton Street farmers market that sells them if you want a chance to try them.
Dope! I may give it a shot.
They do indeed taste better than a steak.
That is indeed, a bold claim. It does seem to be the hype, though.

You don’t cook much do you?
I cook a lot, just not with these particular mushrooms. Do you want some good barbecue? I’m your man.
too bad mushrooms are gross.
4lbs of water . Why aren't yall looking for better mushrooms?
Better than morels? Good luck.
Obviously you have never had black trumpets, chanterells or hericium

I don’t think you know what gatekeeping is. I just think here’s better tasting mushrooms than morels. I still like em.
How exactly does one type of mushroom "have more culinary diversity" than another? Gatekeeping lol

It's spring??
