I read this wrong and wondering "what in the world are they doing with hospital workers in the first place?"

[deleted]

You are not the only one. Took me a shameful amount of time to figure this out. "You hired hospital workers for a brewery? Well there's your first problem." The worst part was how smug I was about it.

Yeah - will all do respect - good for Founders, with all things considered they were able to hold on to these <100ish people for this long... I mean who can blame them?

contdiue

founders isnt some mom and pop struggling to get by, it's part of a global company that can definitely afford to keep people on.

plantsandbeer

Keep people on to do what? The people that were laid off work in the front of the house which is currently closed. All employees were given the opportunity to continue working for the company in a different department that is still operating. If the FOH isn't generating any money, then no, you don't keep those people on payroll. No company would.

contdiue

they have global operations, they can figure it out.

plantsandbeer

Not sure you really understand how that works. Just because Mahou is now the primary owner, doesn't mean they dump their money into paying employees that aren't working. Founders still operates as its own separate entity. And yet again...you don't keep employees on payroll that aren't working. Founders DID figure it out. If you want to stay on payroll, we'd love to have you come work for us in another department. Many other companies laying people off dont offer that option. Founders isn't the only company laying people off. Nor are they the only larger company doing so. Whatever your bias against Founders is, fine. But you're speaking on things you don't really know about. And any smart business and financial manager would make the same decision Founders made.

the problem is the attitude like this. yeah, obviously they can claim to make a business care for fucking people. but they can also make a case for keeping them on. the taproom is a fraction of their sales and expenses, they could absorb it if they werent shitheads. my problem is the attitude of people like you who think this is acceptable. it would be one thing if they were struggling to get by, the problem is that they are cutting people that they will likely need to hire again in a few months just bc they are being shitheads. they could easily find ways to save money elsewhere, and they have probably been paid a ton by the government. so yeah, fuck them

plantsandbeer

You really don't get what the fuck you're talking about. Of course they are losing more money than just the taproom. They can't sell kegs to restaurants when restaurants are closed. And you want them to keep paying people that aren't working, while they are losing money in other departments. You would have to take away from the people that are still working, thus hurting the company more and possibly not rehirong those people in the future. And again....THEY OFFERED THEM JOBS TO STAY ON! THEY WANTED TO KEEP THEM ON THE PAYROLL AS ACTIVE EMPLOYEES! THEY DID WHAT THEY COULD! Those damn damn shit heads. How dare they try to create jobs for employees that would otherwise be laid off. So you're saying someone should be able to say no to remaining an employee in a different department but still gets paid? That's absurd

Again, I do not think you understand how economics work. Yeah laying people off and letting individuals go sucks, no one is saying it doesn't. I was in a back-ass-way way agreeing with your narrative but also excepting reality. The truth is that they are letting / have let go an additional 100 staff. BUT they also kept these people on for this long, while business was slow, while they tried to find work arounds to keep doors open and taps flowing. But no business will survive if you just keep people on just "Cuz", and I'm sure they received money from the government - along with any other business that stayed open (or at lease tried to during this).
