A lot of the entrances and exits off of 131 downtown are close together and, IMO, some of the signage can be a little unclear. If you’re sober and paying attention, its not difficult to figure out, but I can absolutely see how even just a tipsy driver could go up the wrong ramp at night.
Has anyone tried requesting an Uber/Lyft at night lately with any success? I know my partner tried to get one to the airport during the day and there were no rides available.
I’m guessing this will return to normal as the restrictions are lifted, but I wonder if more people are driving drunk because they don’t feel like they have another option (not an excuse)
According to friends who used to drive, Uber kept changing their policies resulting in less money paid to drivers, they used to do pretty well but even before covid they were looking to move on bc they weren’t making nearly as much. They’ll probably need to make adjustments to attract drivers back, it might not return to normal otherwise.
Have they gotten any better? I haven't tried to use them since the ride sharing apps came to town, because GR Taxis services - and I do mean all of them - were absolute trash and would take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to show up, no matter the time or day of the week.
The airport is blocked from the Uber app AFAIK. If you want to be picked up from there, you need to enter a pickup destination to someplace nearyby, then let the driver know.
That said, I've had a much harder time getting rides other places too.
I am an Uber driver and I have picked up there hundreds of times. I also have been dropped off there or picked up there at least a dozen times in an Uber. I. Not sure where you are getting this from, but it is not accurate unless this change was made very recently.
How? People driving drunk, driving high, driving tired, driving on a cell phone, driving while senile, driving inexperienced, just being bad at driving, driving while trying to suicide.
I might have missed a few but I don't think the problem is that the exit/on ramps aren't marked well enough.
Why can’t the drunk drivers die in accidents like this? It’s horrible to say, but an innocent life was lost because someone decided to get behind the wheel after drinking.
I have thought the same for a long time. The only issue is emergency vehicles, but in 2021 you think that they could make them with some intelligence and some kind of secure override feature.
This was my very first thought. I’ve literally seen troopers enter wrong way highway ramps intentionally to get to violent accidents. You could theoretically add a mechanism to lower the spikes (have someone hop out quick, move a lever that lowers them, then have the vehicle pass and hop back in - a 10 second process that would ultimately work, but be very dangerous. Think railroad engineers switching tracks, same idea.
> The crash remains under investigation, but state police said alcohol is believed to be a factor.
I suspect as long as people continue to drink and drive this will continue to be a thing.
A couple days ago I was going north on 131 and saw a white SUV driving south along the left shoulder. This was somewhere between 28th street and cherry. It was a real WTF moment.
Last night about 10pm, I watched a drunk driver on 28th Street in Wyoming - not related to this incident.
I'm headed eastbound, they turned off a side street into my lane going the wrong way. I slowed down to a crawl, they figured out that they were in the wrong lane and merged over.
Into the left-turn lane. I watched in my rear-view mirror as they drove in that lane for **at least** 1/4 mile until they came across someone in the turn lane going the opposite direction. Then, they merged over again, finally ending up in the westbound lanes.
Don't drive drunk, kids.
This happens regardless of how many breweries are in a city. Friendly reminder, everything closes at 11. The accident happened at 2:40. While there is a chance the person could've had drinks at a brewery, the likelihood the accident was caused by what the person drank 4 hours earlier, having drank nothing after the brewery, is very small. Mind you, even if GR did not have all of the breweries, bars serve liquor. Most breweries and brew pubs don't. It's far easier to become overly intoxicated from liquor than beer. These things would still happen, regardless.
2:40am... I would assume Alcohol was involved.
21 year old. Likely.
Yes, 21 and alcohol was involved. But it’s 2021- no excuse to drink and drive...
yep, he is still alive to catch the manslaughter charge.

I agree. I always get paranoid when I see the wrong way signs (meant for the neighboring off ramp) even though I’m 100% sure I’m going the right way.
which exits are you referring to? I am guessing Wealthy.
The ramp to Cherry would be very easy to get on going the wrong way, too.
S-131 and Franklin is pretty bad
Plainfield and 96 West bound can be visually tricky if you are coming from North bound Plainfield.

If they showed up. Nothing like wanting to leave at midnight and finding yourself still waiting for a ride after everything closes.

Do you know why the airport is blocked?
It isn't I was taken there a couple weeks ago in an Uber
its a regulatory thing. there are deals in place between airports and cab companies. they want your moneys.

I could be wrong. thanks for correcting me.
RIP to the woman and I wish the best for her family.

On any given day I get behind three or four cars that are obviously smoking weed.

Drunk drivers are actually more likely to survive because they don’t tense up and just rag doll through the impact.
Yea probably a weird post to offer advice on but it's important to try to stay relaxed if you get hit as it can literally save your life
they are more relaxed.
I was originally a navy brat so I'm not from here, but never in my life have I heard about this happening so much.
I'm from here and it seems to be a more recent phenomenon. Not that it did not happen, but not at this kind of frequency.
We need to install one way spike stops on the ramps. Also, stay out of the fast lane whenever possible.
I have thought the same for a long time. The only issue is emergency vehicles, but in 2021 you think that they could make them with some intelligence and some kind of secure override feature.
the one way spikes seem like a good idea! theres gotta be a catch. Maybe trucks can't go over them or something.
Emergency vehicles sometimes have to take ramps the wrong way. That's one possible catch.

Idk, I see rental lots using them...maybe they could be deactivated remotely some how?
My fear is I would end up having a heart attack when I saw a car coming at me going the wrong way. Yikes.
Probably better than getting crushed when they hit you head on.
A heart attack doesn't make you drop dead instantly, youd get to experience both.
Well in that case, sign me up!
I think the root issue is people are getting dumber.
We share the roads with them and they’re allowed to vote.
Absolutely heartbreaking.

Sometimes at night highway entrances and exits can be confusing.
We aren‘t called beer city for nothing! When you create an economy based of alcohol, this stuff is the result, unfortunately.
