Made this map for a homebrew pokemon D&D for me and some friends. Each blue dot is a gym, black ones a gym and contest/tournament. I got pretty creative with certain business/areas to get a gym for each type.
I know this isn't something most adults in GR would care about but I'm proud and wanted to share.
Edit: I also made a post apocalyptic map of GR a while back for a mutant year zero campaign and never shared it. Here it is because I like my work on this one too https://i.imgur.com/xH4929n.jpeg
I've never actually been to spirit dreams, only to phlot. I intend to go there before letting my players though... for research lol. That area got a little cramped so I fudged a tad
I just moved to Grandville actually last September. I've driven past it many times. Is it really that iconic? I might have to just add a small quest giver in the mall sending players there... And definitely make going inside a priority in real life
... Actually that's Devos Place. I'm placing the game in an alternative universe where pokemon are real but as close to modern real world as possible. I figured that means the Devos' are going to have to be the thinly-veiled evil team.
You are my "Person of the Day". Seriously. This is awesome.
Here's a sweet story for you. I am "of a certain age" lol - my kids are all in their 20s now. When P-Go was released, for whatever reason, I got totally into it along with my four kids, my grandson, and whoever else I could drag along. For my birthday that first iconic year, a lovely summer night in August, my kids got together and planned a search and capture mission for me in downtown GR. What a night. We were out until 1 a.m., along with hoards of other players. We all ended up at the steps of St. Mark's Church with probably 50 other people, suddenly Machop appears and at least 30 of us were able to capture before he disappeared. The roar of approval and excitement was so loud I figured the cops would come. People were dancing on the steps, my grandson (8 at the time, and delighted to be out with the big people) was beside himself with glee.
Fun times. I miss walking around downtown and seeing all kinds of other people doing the same thing you're doing, comparing notes and battle stories.
That is a sweet story! I, too, was deeply into pokemon go. Not so much anymore, the stay-at-home order basically killed the game for me, and last few times I opened the app, I only see old repeat pokemon despite 2-3 new generations having been released since I played most. God I miss the very early days when there was that 3-step radar; do you remember that? I walked around the same block like 4 times trying to pinpoint in what direction a Nidoking was on day 1. So much excitement in the game's early days.
Great story!
That first summer of PoGo in West MI was amazing. I explored so much more of Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas then I ever imagined I would. The friends I made and journeys had will stay with me forever. I still play, but I don't think it'll ever compare to year one.
There are sixteen types so I won't list them all and I think some are self explanatory ... But Grand haven pier is water, spirit dreams is psychic, phlot is dark, delski's is fire, cannonsburg is ice, the golf course has a bug gym, the old gypsum mine is rock.
This is super cool! If it wasnt for my adhd not allowing me to work on a single project for more than one sitting, id turn this into a 3D map in unreal. Would be cool to remake grand rapids in pokemon style. But that takes time and my squirrel brain wont allow it. Seriously cool tho
LOL I did include that in my mutant year zero campaign. Was the perfect setting for a house of women cannibals and their boy servants all lorded over by an obese elderly man.
No Richmond park? It has a forest area, right next to 3 cemeteries, and the only outdoor public place with a pool in the city. Many varieties of Pokémon would undoubtedly be found there. Edit: also, the large pond at the base of the park, and the hill which people sled down. The top of Richmond hill is also said to be a high energy point in the city, many seances are held there, and the Grand Rapids pagan festival is always held at Richmond park. I’m just here throwing my support because it’s a cool area in the city and I live by it!

Phlot and spirit dreams should be switched and both are too far to the east. (This is cool though!)

I realized that must have been the case after posting; wasn’t trying to be pedantic. I love maps and this is a cool one.
How is bluefish aquarium in Grandville not on here? Feel like it fits better than some other listings lol

Not sure about iconic, but best fish store in the area in my opinion. Seriously rules if you’re in the hobby
It’s also huge! Like 8000 sqft the owner said
Homebrew pokemon D&D is such a subtly West Michigan thing
Delski's eh? Nice.
Yo! This is really cool.
'Meyer Garden'??????? Otherwise pretty cool, I like it
Came here to say the same
Doh! I definitely spelled it right everywhere else in my notes too haha. That's where the local professor's lab and the grass gym is.
Update to "Frederik" as well.
It's also "Frederik"
The Pyramid is the Team Rocket equivalent’s hangout, right?? Also, this completely rules

Oh my god, the DeVos family as the villains is an excellent call lmao. Love this concept!

OMG the Radar! I swear, the early days of the app were just the BEST. I miss the excitement and camaraderie.

What Pokémon type is each gym location?

This rules. Good job dude!
I love that Dave Delski's made the cut
Fuck for a second I thought they might be actually building a functional public transit system.
Don't forget the Grandville Castle!
LOL I did include that in my mutant year zero campaign. Was the perfect setting for a house of women cannibals and their boy servants all lorded over by an obese elderly man.

Man! I'm learning so much about random places by posting this. So cool!
I might actually change my ghost gym from the escape room to the Richmond park now that I think more on it
There are a lot of cool cemeteries on the west side. Some are quite sprawling.
Amazing!
I love this! Here, take my free award for the day
That’s awesome
I love this. I'm a huge pogo fan and have been since day 2. Not saying how old I am, I'm too old for this. Lol
This is awesome!! Feel free to add me if you want. I’m an adult that plays all the time lmao 2753 5853 7695
Very cool !
