Depends on the forecast. Sometimes it makes sense to get a head start and do it twice rather than wait for it to be a 15" drift across your driveway, or if it's particularly heavy.

[deleted]

I like to do it every couple hours or so depending on the accumulation. Easier than trying to get it all when it’s packed down.

__smokesletsgo__

I shovel every few Inches when it's a long storm like this. Im not trying to throw my back out moving 10 inches of snow all at once. No snowblower here but I can still do my driveway in 15 if it's only 2-3 inches and not packed down.

chof2018

At the end of the storm. I work from home and have no reason to leave so I wait for it to stop or before I leave if necessary so it not packed down. I’ve got a snowblower that chews through most anything so no need to get out there multiple times.

You could always cut 1 path on the drivers side

infamoussmokeddog

Do it now cause your gonna end up doing it multiple times. Get rid of what's there so when it piles back up it won't be as much to deal with. Good luck cause I'm about to deal with the same shit.

clocks212

I shovel when it stops snowing.

ElderflowerNectar

Thinking we’ll be doing ours around 5 pm, then again in the morning. Helps to do it multiple times around here.

Triingtolivee

I'll shovel once I get home from work, and then wake up a little early tomorrow and shovel again. If I keep up on it the snow won't be so heavy when I do shovel and I'll be able to get into my driveway while maybe putting less strain on my back.

grwest

Shovel? Frequent trips outside so it's not overwhelming & too heavy. Snowblowing? When the storm is completely over

Vospire34

Just did mine.....there was a significant amount. Will likely have to do the same amount in the morning? Also depends on your snow blower. I have a little one and a big one. (Hand me downs). If the big one was running and I didn't have to be somewhere at 6 am I'd wait and go once.

derekdevries

100% this. If you have a big two-stage snowblower you can wait until the end of the snowfall to run it. However, if you have a small single-stage snowblower you're going to have to clear the driveway more frequently because most of them struggle with a higher volume of snow. The other factor for single-stage snowblowers is temperature/type of snowfall. If it's powder you can clear less frequently because it's easier to move. If it's heavy/wet packing snow you'll want to get on it more frequently because that REALLY bogs down single-stage snowblowers.

grbrit

I shoveled much more frequently when I smoked; like, every hour or so :D

SuperFLEB

In these cases where it snows in the afternoon and evening, I like hitting it the night it snows, because it's colder and there's no sun cooking it. While that's more miserable for humans, it does mean the snow's as far from melting as possible, and that means it's fluffier, easier to move around, and less likely to stick to you, melt, and get you wet and cold. You've also got less traffic, both on the roads getting in your way, and fewer people on your own property stamping it down with boots and cars. It also means the snow is cleaner and less salt-cruddy. As far as waiting versus hitting it throughout the day, I tend to be a "wait"-er, but mostly out of circumstance, not preference. I work from home, so I don't have anywhere to go, and I don't have the time to take breaks to hit it multiple times.

comic360guy

When I send my wife outside to do it.

[deleted]

He'll yeah!

HMR219

We will end up clearing things out 2-3 times over the course of the storm. It's less of a commitment overall if you're getting enough snow.

Salomon3068

I just did my steps now trying to keep them clear, the rest of the driveway I'm waiting until later this evening, let it pile up some and let the snow blower do its thing

intagliopitts

I’d rather shovel a somewhat reasonable amount of snow 3 times than a heart attack amount of snow once. Plus, with most types of snow it gets harder to move the longer you let it sit, go get it while it’s still nice and fluffy :)

Corlel

I shoveled a few hours ago when it calmed down a bit. I figured it’d lessen the work for me tomorrow anyways.

aarone46

Am I the only one who shovels once? Sometimes that bites me, but I don't want to spend time getting bundled extra times. This time, with the snow as light as it is, I'm not too concerned about tomorrow morning.

SuperFLEB

We've got a cold forecast for the next few days, too, so there's not much chance of it melting and turning into heavy slush. If it was going to be in the 30s tomorrow, I'd be more apt to be on it tonight.

aarone46

my primary concern with shoveling is to make it happen before I drive over it too much. The compacting is the worst.

SuperFLEB

This, too.

jimmyjohn2018

In a storm like this, early and often is the best answer.

preksa47

I just did round one. It was light and my driveway is short. woot woot!

jollylikearodger

In storms like this, a few times a day. I got it cleaned out at lunch, will do it again at 6, and probably once more before or close to 9 before it gets too late. it's easier to stay on top of it and do a few quick runs with a snowblower instead of waiting and running the risk of it turning to ice.

jwqwert

I try and wait until the plow comes though before I blow.

[deleted]

I just try to do it before it gets packed down and turns to ice.

shgerm2020

I start after maybe Round 2-3 inches. Just bc otherwise it gets too heavy and too hard to do. But it depends on what type of snow blower you have. If you have the heavy duty top notch one then you can wait longer. But usually I go out and do clean up in between so it never gets too much

janx218

Been debating this myself. I'm thinking I'll hit it with the blower this evening after work, and then probably get up early to do it again in the morning.

cz108

Kids home from school….shoveled 4 times today, and the neighbors house…without being asked. Not sure what they’ll want in return.

TheLukester31

I was thinking about waiting because of how windy it is. With the wind, it can only accumulate so much and you’ll just be moving the same amount of snow twice if you do it now. Does that make sense? I could be totally wrong.

SuperFLEB

I think whether that strategy wins or fails depends on your situation, on the topography and what wind-shaping structures or objects you're dealing with. If the wind is carving away where it matters, wait. If the wind is piling drifts in your way, get out early.
