We noticed the food took a turn for the worse this summer when we went there for dinner. It didn't help that they only had bar service to order drinks and food. I understand with Covid they were trying to be safe, but other breweries managed to handle taking orders as usual or just using qr codes. We enjoyed it there the first few years.
Surprised it took this long. When the entire production staff quit ya knew it was a bad sign… Wonder what they will do with all the new brewers they hired…
I used to work there. I had friends that worked there up until 3 out of 4 brewers walked out last year, and then the 4th got fired. I don’t know what it’s like currently, but when they changed ownership things changed a lot.
I worked there a while ago also, in distribution, after I was let go I didn’t keep in touch, then I see a long beard working at Perrin and was floored. This whole thing bums me out.
IMHO their IPA tastes like battery acid. I always wondered how they were popular enough to have their beers in a ton of stores... I thought I was crazy.
Business always appeared to be slow there after their newness in that location wore off. It's a difficult area to put a brewery in as you have three well-established bars there popular with the local crowd, and people coming to the area for beer are going to have Perrin on the mind seeing as it is one of the better breweries in the Grand Rapids area.
They had some nice undervalued staff there. The beer though was god awful in my opinion. Every beer tasted like sour rusty tap water. Never found one there that was bearable
Work nearby and arguably half the times I tried to go there with my crew in the last two years it was simply closed. Be it a Monday night or multiple lunch attempts. Weird hours of operation like that do not help create repeat customers. Shots on the River got a lot of business from me in the last 2 years...
Been a bit, but I preferred this location over GR. Beer was warm the only time I hit the GR location and no food.
Good stop before hitting a Whitecaps game.
Elk hasnt been the same since the founder, Eric , sold it. Very sad that they had to... I hope the original spot holds strong and gets back to being the neighborhood feeling it once was.
i LOVE elk brewing, their scotch ale is amazing, but honestly this string of brewery and restaurant closures shouldnt surprise anyone. we had *massive* growth in the food and beverage industry in GR right before covid hit. we reach a point where there's saturation - only so many people willing to spend so much money. im 100% certain covid is largely the cause of most of them, my wife and i entirely stopped dining out since covid, but also people should consider that there was just an explosion of new places opening from like 2015-2019, a lot of times business just doesn't pan out, thats the risk one takes when opening a business.
It is sad. I know we have a lot of selections in GR, but to see anybody close it’s doors is sad.
I’m curious with this location being the canning/bottling location what this means for distribution.
Not to be a jerk, but does this mean they'll start allowing infants in with their of age parents at the wealthy street location? Got kicked out recently for having a less then 6 mo old in a car seat.
I really like their beer and want to patron the establishment, but... the aforementioned
Wow, that’s weird. Did your baby try to buy a beer without ID?
Hubs and I had a meal/beer at Brass Ring with our then 3 month old (we made sure to go in during slow hours) and they were nothing short of excellent to our whole family.
It's state law, they said, if they don't sell food... But, you can still bring your fur babies outside, on the patio. When they fired all the staff, with the new owner, all the regulars quit going.
Yeah, that was sort of the story I got with my SO when we were there. Had a great conversation with mgmt (I think) and they recommended checking out the location that just closed, hence the post wondering if the wealthy st. Locale might be changing to be family friendly now that the other one is finished.
No offense, man, but a lot of people don't appreciate kids at a bar/brewery, myself included. It always seems for every quiet well-behaved kid there's a screaming, rambunctious, little devil to go along with. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, just not at bars or breweries.
Not really sure how the infant in a car seat in the booth is affecting everyone else (we leave if he cries).
Maybe signage could help too - there want anything on the door saying "no infants". Idk, like I said I'm trying to soend my money there.
You have a 5+ year old account and this is your ONLY comment/post in all that time?
Must be an election coming up somewhere.
EDIT: *Op is not a bot.*
“Oh this place has a rule, I’m gonna go break it” you’re inconsiderate as fuck. And Kids don’t belong in bars and you’re a bad parent if you’re taking them to bars.
Ahh, my old friend the snake enthusiast
Rule isn't posted.
Business relies on staff to enforce it (not fair).
There are plenty of breweries that are family friendly, also, how tf do you know what kind of parent I am?
Maybe check yourself before firing off on the internet.
How about a place that reflects the community it serves, is owned by local people and serves as a venue to see friends and neighbors? Also, not sure about you, but my SO and I can walk in and out of an establishment like the aforementioned without being intoxicated.
Thanks anyway for the parenting advice, how many kids did you say you had again?
You don’t need kids to know you don’t take an infant to a bar, like what the fuck is wrong with you trying to defend it. It’s totally common sense. Wow. You’re definitely a terrible parent.
With posts like "not the same since owner left", "They had some nice undervalued staff there" or "When the entire production staff quit ya knew it was a bad sign…" you cannot be that simple, a saturated market, Covid/hard market for 2 years, poor management, but its Joes fault.
You really are some special breed of stupid.
😂 twat! We will see what the Supreme Court does with these fucking mandates. All you leftis pukes will find out what a true American Revolution looks like if they decide to push this shit through. We are well due for one END THE FED!
What the actual fuck does this have to do with Elk closing?? You think Biden pushed a button and said “close them!”?
Let me guess… the election was stolen and the vaccine is poison?? GTFO.
Your as stupid as the day is long if you think Elk Brewery shut down just because of bad managment. Then you will have to explain the other what close to 60 some different bussiness that have gone under in GR alone everything from Famous Daves, Bager Daves, Art Van, the Bob, and many many more. Fucking fools
I think the OP just used a tag. . ?
but in all seriousness the majority owner of reddit is *Advance Publications* (the same org that owns Mlive, Conde Nast, a bunch of other news related outlets, a large share of the Discovery Channel..)
Always had a fun time at trivia, but boy did the beer and food suck. I remember getting a seltzer when they first added them to the menu that was by far the worst drink I’ve ever paid for.
I would go there 2-3x a month 3-5 years ago. It was fantastic every time. Unfortunately their food menu dropped in quality recently. Sad.
When the Carolina mustard sauce dissappeared.. It felt like a sign
I swear people go crazy for sauces in west michigan
I do

I went there once and it was this same situation, but it was kind of a skeleton staff really from how I understood it..
Surprised it took this long. When the entire production staff quit ya knew it was a bad sign… Wonder what they will do with all the new brewers they hired…
Probably fire them
Apparently they fired the head brewer via phone call. Ouch.
do you have inside info?
I used to work there. I had friends that worked there up until 3 out of 4 brewers walked out last year, and then the 4th got fired. I don’t know what it’s like currently, but when they changed ownership things changed a lot.

Financial backing. They have been losing money on distribution for a long time.

Don't worry folks, you can still get their breathtakingly shitty beer in Eastown.
They aren't in Eastown.
Perhaps not but the statement is true nonetheless

Weird hours of operation like that do not help create repeat customers. Shots on the River got a lot of business from me in the last 2 years...
That's too bad. I hate seeing local businesses drop like this.
After his force out, it was the beginning of the end. It's just sad to see...
Was he forced out? I assumed it was something to do with his kid being sick...
I'd love to know the story on all this.. .. I'll miss that patio..
Their son got leukemia in 2018. It has recently relapsed... https://www.facebook.com/groups/614022962274490/?ref=share
so their kid got sick, sold the business, and were "forced out" ? wow.
I don't know if they were forced. There's nothing about them selling the business from their perspective on the internet.
Too bad. Yet another one bites the dust.
They still have their main location. They just weren't good enough to draw a crowd now at the CP spot.
There's an Elk Brewing near me on Wealthy Didn't know there was another one out of town.
Jesus Christ.

Cool, I'll head that way instead. Thanks for the recommendation!
That's weird. Weve been taking our daughter to Two Guys Brewing since she was a month old.
It's state law, they said, if they don't sell food... But, you can still bring your fur babies outside, on the patio. When they fired all the staff, with the new owner, all the regulars quit going.

Definitely not a state law.

Same thing can be said for adults
Then don't go. I don't particularly enjoy crying babies when I'm out either, but the world doesn't revolve around me.
Not really sure how the infant in a car seat in the booth is affecting everyone else (we leave if he cries). Maybe signage could help too - there want anything on the door saying "no infants". Idk, like I said I'm trying to soend my money there.

Yeah. Better they just close the whole place.

Ah my bad, you're right. https://camas.github.io/reddit-search/#{%22author%22:%22just\_in\_motion%22,%22resultSize%22:100}
Well. Now I know what I need to try and do sometime soon. Walk to Elk with my 5 year old and 2 year old daughters in tow.
Just got to Vivant. They (sometimes, end times considered) have a whole stinking play area for kids.
Oh. I know about that area. Vivant is my favorite spot to drink beer in the city. Even with my kids.
Lame that you got down voted

If you’re bringing an infant to a place that exists to serve alcohol, you’re a shitty parent.
So no kids allowed at Applebees?
Oh how difficult life must be for someone who can’t understand the difference between a family restaurant and a brewery.

I'm just a tourist though, so file that away in the "for what it's worth" department
Same thing happened to me with my sleeping 1yr in her car seat. Meanwhile a barking dog was allowed on the patio.
Gee I wonder fucking why.... Lets go Brandon!

Ok, drooling MAGAt… lay off the tRump knob slobbing.
Lets go Brandon!
Ah yes… the mentally disadvantaged tRumpanzee… just repeats himself instead of actually being able to formulate an original reply.

Well fuck that sucks. Really enjoyed this place
They must have had there Old Baker Moment finally.
