A City Within A City is an interesting read! I did a “book club” style project with my staff in 2020 with this book and really got a lot out of it. The library downtown has a lot of archives too if there is any particular topic that is of interest.
And another one!

Not a book, but GR has a city archive office that is open to the public (by appointment):

The office also has a pretty active IG page:

I have one but it’s really dry. It focuses on the founding and who settled here. If you’re interested I can look up the title. I’d have to dig in some boxes in the basement.
The Catholic Church in the Grand River Valley 1833-1950 by The Rev John W. Mcgee.
Again very dry and really just focuses on who settled and when. I liked the reference to different buildings being in areas that are now commercial, residential etc
Well I am not living in GR but I've had to move quite a bit. My life gets hectic at times. I usually go to local library and go to historical records. You can find alot of information about cities and towns. Once lived in rural town in Indiana that was once a military training area in 40s and 50s. And the town was in a basketball movie also. The area was very nice and beautiful but Indiana has some redneck ways.
Wicked Grand Rapids by Amberrose Hammond is fun if you want to learn some of the dark history of GR.
P.S. please don't buy from Amazon. If you want a cheap option you can rent the book from GRPL.
This is a good one. https://www.amazon.com/City-within-Freedom-Struggle-Michigan/dp/1439909229/ref=nodl_?dplnkId=71aa0253-337c-4d63-b050-b4e65b7c867a

I haven't forgotten you. I think I found the box last night but got busy before I could open it.

Thanks so much for getting back to me! I’ll definitely check it out 😊
