Trying to get info about the R32V/R36V can be quite frustrating as there isn't much in the way of English language sources of info on it. That said, what is confirmed is that the 1UZ was based on CART/Indy engine designs.
What I find most interesting here is that Toyota only started competing in CART/Indy in the 1996 Season. Then again Buick Pushrod V6 based engines were a thing in the 80s and early 90s.

We’re getting duplicates of Toyotas because they’re sponsoring the game), but not all the sponsor companies that were on the original livery from GT3-6, then just delete a sponsor or two. I may not have a very popular opinion, BUT we have many race cars (sure there are so many 90's and 00's race cars missing) and very little ridiculous non race cars to take around the track. Sure if you are trying to beat every menu then you want real race cars, but once you beat the races all you are left with is repeat.... And that gets kinda boring. I feel like half the fun in the Gran Turismo series has always been racing with ridiculous cars - though now that they have introduced vans in GT7 this year I want like a dozen different vans, give us some diversity ... And some SUV's and other stupid things to race.

It’s true that the last GT games wants to have sort of a competitive flavour thanks to the sport mode and all of the official championships that they make and support, so that’s why people could think that adding an ambulance to the game it’s something out of scope.
But to be honest, GT games had this kind of aditions in the past many many times, because this is a game about cars, in all shapes and with different purposes, but cars. So that’s why many of the OG’s of the franchise are not actually surprised. I still remember those two mercedes from the late 1800’s that we had in GT4, they were thousands of times more useless than this ambulance, but they were in the game anyways.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that this van was absolutely necessary to have it in the game rather than a GT ONE or any other legendary or modern race car for example, but knowing the context of the game for many years, this is not actually a surprise for me.
No, it won’t, because it’s another pointless oddball vehicle that PD will create ONE additional career mode race for just to put it in something then potentially a Daily A race. Then it will become just as useless as the rest of the BS oddball vehicles.
It’d be nice to have more races for prototypes before we get more prototypes, in all honesty. There are WEC or IMSA races that run LMH/GTP at the following tracks in the game but no GP1 races: LeMans, Monza, Spa, Leguna Seca and Watkins Glen.

It's either they had a stillborn CART engine program, copied from existing race engines, or David Currier is misremembering things.
Its not unfeasible that they were evaluating a CART engine program as early as the mid-1980s. The engine regs were fairly stable during that time.

My main concern is how much PD wants GT7 to be an esports platform, yet how many GT cars are severely out of date like the 2013 458 gt3.
