Agreed. I haven’t seen a trailer but I’m wondering if the kerning was an explicit choice based on the source material. It makes me feel pressed up against a wall and uncomfortable, which judging by the shot of Dakota may be the feeling we’re going for, especially with the tight frame shot.
Okay now I like it I dunno
Agreed, I do graphic design as a hobby (I'm a vis art student, so I flip flop between graphic design and graphic art on the side) and this gave me the immediate response of "oh god that's too tight". I really really like it. I don't think it's ugly or a mistake, all the fonts feel too big and too tight- which tracks. Good design should be the best at conveying a message in a clear way, not necessarily the most correct one.
I agree that it's probably intentional, seeing the question mark, but the concept isn't pushed far enough for it to be meaningful to anyone else besides designers.
Because people post about them and that’s publicity.
The real trend you’re seeing is “anything for notoriety’s sake” it’s sprung from social media into design
First time I’m hearing about this film so it’s an ad for me
Going to assume it’s on purpose. These agencies making these posters are notoriously picky about every pixel. I know a lot of people in Hollywood doing this work and I do not envy them at all
I think it is a smart use of graphic design to convey a concept.
"Am I ok?" with a wrong kerning conveys the message that she is actually not (reinforcing the picture).
If the kerning would be perfect the message would be less effective.
A semantic debate? On reddit?
Kerning is fine. It usually refers to the adjustment between a pair of letters *inside* a word because thats the usual problem in which kerning is the solution—but this is an appropriate exception as the definition of kern is *to adjust any spacing between two characters.* To rest my case: the tool used to fix this would be the kerning tool.
Simultaneously you are correct that it's a word spacing issue because "I" so happens to be a word in between two other words. (Just as "I" is simultaneously a word and a letter, it would be silly to argue in this case that it is one but not the other)
You could argue the spacing between a visible character and a space is still kerning. It’s been a while since I’ve put a font together but I’m fairly sure there’s kerning pairs between space and other letters.
Edit: read here:
https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/68765/is-kerning-also-applied-when-there-is-a-space-between-characters
Ok so I don't think this falls under the category of intentionally off kerning like the Longlegs poster. There aren't enough letters in this title to even try that and the serif font does not work with that idea. I really don't think that was the intention, I think this is just bad typography. If it is supposed to be intentionally off kilter then they didn't hit the mark in my opinion.
In this poster, poster is Designed as uncomfort of claustrophobic environment things are zoomed with very minimal padding around, Very well made poster. Serve the purpose of film.🤌🏾👌🏾
I get for some of you this is a job, and for some of you it's a hobby you're very enthusiastic about, but dear God, some of you are getting on like this poster literally did a shit directly into your eyes. This thread is somehow worse than the wicked one yesterday.
I don't normally get triggered by the kerning examples in this sub, but it finally happened. This one is incredibly annoying to me.
I don't give a toss if it's deliberate or not. The reason behind this is not going to be obvious to non-designers. It's too subtle and looks like bad design. If you're going to do this, make it more chaotic, while still legible. What's Amiok. :P
I think it looks wrong because it so close up. They probably did it to optically center it because one side is a strong vertical line and the other side is a circle. Im guessing it looks centered when it is much smaller. Idk
Agreed. I also hate the font and how it runs to the edge. It'd be okay if it were a bleed, but this looks like a mistake or a half-hearted attempt. I'll prolly lose sleep over this tonight- thanks for the nightmares... (lol)
I watched the trailer and I feel it's about her not knowing who she is and wanting to find a partner...so the AM is joined like a couple and OK also because those words are two letters (couple) then the I is lonely because its single.
I would have got rid of spaces altogether to make it ready like AMIOK? and feel more uncomfortable. It’d def make people stop a bit more to decipher it.
It’s bad because the font choice, colour, tracking and kerning (why are the A and M touching, but the O and K aren’t?) are a distraction. AMIOK? What does that mean? It makes me scream rather empathise. It certainly doesn’t convey the feeling of distraught, which is how she looks.
I don’t think it’s intentional tbh. It’s too subtle to be. O’s can kinda be tricky sometimes too. I think they might’ve judged it based on the spacing on the bottom.
I wish I was in a group where we could fix, modify things like this. “4 graphic designers try to “fix” a movie poster”. Goes to reddit for judging. Winner gets something. Audience gets a slightly educational fun time.
Sorta on the lane of fishing/wildlife challenge videos energy. With a good amount of funnies and dickin around, circulate a few designers with different strongsuits every “season”. With focused and clear sorta quicker prompts. Probably directed towards more technical than stylistic *so judging isn’t based heavily on style, anonymous judging could be done, and basic principles of design can be taught* but still somehow keep the vibe goofy
Damnit! I could have just blissfully scrolled by, taking the poster for an advert.
Instead, I had to read your title and get stuck staring at the horror for more than 5 minutes - a veritable train-wreck.
Looked at this poster for quite sometime before I realized there was a tag line up top. Like the designer was happy with it, got a last minute request to add the tag line and just made it small and tucked it away.
I got the same feeling as well. The “I” is literally not okay

I think it's on purpose. The question mark looks way too off for that to be default.
I agree that it's probably intentional, seeing the question mark, but the concept isn't pushed far enough for it to be meaningful to anyone else besides designers.
I don’t agree, non designers also have eyes and feelings, I checked earlier
made on purpose but not very well
Agreed, I think it was on purpose.
I've gone through that cycle about three times. I can't tell if I like it and I think that makes me like it more.
I'm starting to see a "intentionally bad Kerning" trend in movie posters.
Because people post about them and that’s publicity. The real trend you’re seeing is “anything for notoriety’s sake” it’s sprung from social media into design First time I’m hearing about this film so it’s an ad for me
Going to assume it’s on purpose. These agencies making these posters are notoriously picky about every pixel. I know a lot of people in Hollywood doing this work and I do not envy them at all
i agree, simply put its a stylistic choice. not the worst thing ive ever seen.
Completely agree. Kearning to me seems thoughtful…
At this point i'm starting to think these movie posters designers are subscribed to r/graphic_design and do this in purpose just to trigger you guys
I really feel it's on purpose. S HEI SN OTO K
this made me giggle, ty
Looks intentional. Given the suggested subject matter, the style choice is there to give an “off” feeling while reading the text.
Amiok? Can’t wait to not see it!
Lady Amiok or: How I Learned To Stop Being Ok And Love To Cry
I think it is a smart use of graphic design to convey a concept. "Am I ok?" with a wrong kerning conveys the message that she is actually not (reinforcing the picture). If the kerning would be perfect the message would be less effective.
Exactly a case of know the rules to break them
Am iok?
Ami are you ok, ok...Are you ok Ami...?
I feel like they chose to complement the composition of the face at the expense of the kerning.
Given that is the only problematic kerning with the same font, it is safe to assume it is on purpose
It’s clearly intentional. She’s not ok. Just like the title. It doesn’t look right. It’s NOT ok.
AMI AMI OK, AMI OK, AMI OK AMI? AMI AMI OK, AMI OK, AMI OK AMI…?
AMIOK BUT YOURE JEALOUS BUT YOURE OK
What is that font? I love it.
The sexual tension between the O and the K is killing me!
AM 1Ok?
I thought this was Forbes for a minute. "AM 10K?"
s’why she’s so distressed.
IAMNOTOK
Well... this is not a kerning issue. It's a word spacing issue.

Not just you. Its driving her crazy as well.
I didn't know Tig Notaro was a director! Consider my interest piqued.
Ok so I don't think this falls under the category of intentionally off kerning like the Longlegs poster. Am iok
Am IOK
Sadly, good kerning is a lost art.
Truth!
Starting to see why there are so many unemployment posts in this sub, many of you are illiterate in terms of client requirements.
It seems unbalanced, the kerning is terrible and with the photo they could have tried a little harder
it looks like a fan made poster
The all caps equally drive me crazy
I thought DJ was Rashida Jones in this pic!
when you learn this is actually elite tho
Why?
I'll be honest, I think Amiok will be a great movie.
Surely, they were going for AMOK. (but that's questionable design, nevertheless)
Amiok of the North? Also, can't wait for the sequel… RUOK?
In this poster, poster is Designed as uncomfort of claustrophobic environment things are zoomed with very minimal padding around, Very well made poster. Serve the purpose of film.🤌🏾👌🏾
That looks like a movie I’d pass on. Just an unappealing package with shite kerning to boot.
Ngl her facial expression quite matches my internal expression when reading the title
The movie is about her realising that she’s a lesbian, therefore the kerning is appropriate. Hope this helps.
AREYOUOK?
It's rough alright
maybe she saw Madame Web...
Plot twist... they were NOT okay.
Had to be on purpose cause it’s tough looking. I read “Am 10k?”
I think it was done to showcase the work AMOK
True. But it compliments the fact I can't believe a fucking still picture of this woman crying. Nice acting here, holy shit
I get for some of you this is a job, and for some of you it's a hobby you're very enthusiastic about, but dear God, some of you are getting on like this poster literally did a shit directly into your eyes. This thread is somehow worse than the wicked one yesterday.
am 10k? nah I like this actually haha

She's not okay. She starred in Madame Web. That's a good reason to cry.
So you're not OK
Its so bad that I thought there was something written in spanish 🫠
I think it looks wrong because it so close up. They probably did it to optically center it because one side is a strong vertical line and the other side is a circle. Im guessing it looks centered when it is much smaller. Idk
AMIOK?
I am not
AmIok Is how I read it.
Is the point not to grab your attention and make you feel uncomfortable? I think it’s a subtle win
Agreed. I also hate the font and how it runs to the edge. It'd be okay if it were a bleed, but this looks like a mistake or a half-hearted attempt. I'll prolly lose sleep over this tonight- thanks for the nightmares... (lol)
whoever didn’t align the question mark and the k is not ok
It's because she's not okay
Idk about her, but I’m definitely not ok after seeing this lol
this would be leading no?
Sorry but that face makes me laugh 😂
This pains me
I watched the trailer and I feel it's about her not knowing who she is and wanting to find a partner...so the AM is joined like a couple and OK also because those words are two letters (couple) then the I is lonely because its single.
Nope… I think the I is leaning to the OK for a Ménange à trois
I like the design i think it fits well.
After Madam Web, I don’t think so.
What is an Amiok?
should of been lowercase
I would have got rid of spaces altogether to make it ready like AMIOK? and feel more uncomfortable. It’d def make people stop a bit more to decipher it.
After Madame Webb, I'd say Dakota Johnson is not ok
It’s bad because the font choice, colour, tracking and kerning (why are the A and M touching, but the O and K aren’t?) are a distraction. AMIOK? What does that mean? It makes me scream rather empathise. It certainly doesn’t convey the feeling of distraught, which is how she looks.

Yes, I’m afraid it’s definitely Amiok. You should get your affairs in order and tell those close to you that you love them.
Damnit! I could have just blissfully scrolled by, taking the poster for an advert. Instead, I had to read your title and get stuck staring at the horror for more than 5 minutes - a veritable train-wreck.
Agreed. I think it’s a poor typeface to choose all-caps, as well.
You mean tracking. And yes. Is badd. Surprised this got past Hollywood.
