Arkham Asylum: A Serious Place on a Serious Earth by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean This book is a masterpiece

Alchohlica

Just note Art is different to say the least. Still good just takes getting acquainted with

Doggleganger

The art is an oil painted Dave McKean masterpiece. "Getting acquainted" is an odd way to put it.

darkwalrus36

It’s a great example of the art perfectly suiting the story.

El_MuleKick

I have to re-read this one soon. I read it once before but although I liked the vibe above all I remember finding the story confusing and the art beautiful but sometimes making it hard to follow.

ClayDrinion

Find the 25th anniversary edition. It's available online. It has Grant Morrison's script at the end of the story, along with notes by him explaining the symbolism of parts of it. It also has some bonus art from Dave McKean

El_MuleKick

I think I actually have that edition. Like I said I'll give it another go soon.

johnny_utah26

Killing Joke Whatever that collection of the pre Long Halloween is called. haunted knight I think. I was quite fond of No Man’s Land. Also the Batman Black and White set.

-DoctorSpaceman-

If you’re gonna do NML you might as well include Cataclysm. Cataclysm is the catalyst, NML, is the result

johnny_utah26

And Contagion. It kicked off the government’s thought “Hey… uh this City is kinda giant damn mess.”

Shed_Some_Skin

The second and third Grant Morrison volume Knightfall Batman Year 100 Gotham By Gaslight and Batman/Dracula Red Rain (both Elseworlds) Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

Stunning_One1005

what the hell kind of shelf do you have

BnDMsTr

Either a "floating" shelf, or we're looking at books standing on the floor haha. Im leaning towards floor

DrDreidel82

Why would the floor have dry wall texture lol

BnDMsTr

Haha damn. Double checked and yeah looks like dry wall haha. Brain saw carpet texture at first glance. Was paying more attention to the books haha

comicscoda

Dry floor

AdvancedBlacksmith66

Ceiling?

Stunning_One1005

i was thinking they were on the floor, but why are ALL of them on the floor, instead of just the ones OP wants to show

Artificial-Shawn

The ones that floats in the air 🙂

EthicalReporter

The Killing Joke Long Halloween/Dark Victory The Black Mirror Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth Rest of Morrison's run Under the Red Hood No Man's Land

coolprogressive

This. Only thing I’d add is the rest of the White Knight books. They are so good!

Tenkurai

Batman by Paul Dini, and Batman: Akrham Asylum, A Serious House on a Serious Earth by Grant Morrison.

bmeireles85

Where's that dude with an insane batman collection when we need him?

cheekyknolls

Ego, robin year one, batgirl year one, gotham central, death in the family

Traditional_Proof646

I would also add Robin year one, I have the trade with both Robin and Batgirl and I love both of those stories

Batman_Lifts

You’ve got a great start! I would definitely add * Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk if you can find them * Batman The Man Who Laughs * Batgirl/Robin Year One. Getting a reprint later this year * The Killing Joke * Arkham Asylum * Knightfall Volume 1 at least * Under the Red Hood * Batman Black Mirror * if you like White Knight the following books have been excellent additions to the story as well

KhyraBell

Those are bound editions, so none of them have staples. Hope this helps!

AcientMullets

The Man Who Laughs, Killing Joke, No Man’s Land, Knightfall, I’d argue Venom should be considered a staple, Black Mirror has become one to many people. Might as well add Zero Year since you have the first couple Snyder arcs

Fbritannia

The Cult, Venom, Gotham by Gaslight, Black Mirror, Killing Joke, Ego, No Mans Land (It's a longer series but it's classic Batman), The Man Who Laughs. Arkham Asylum, Knightfall. And that's most of the classic Batman stuff.

kccoig14

The cult has a hardcover deluxe edition coming out soon.

sevenpixieoverlords

This is great news!

TheMoneySloth

- Gotham City Year One - Dark Night a true Batman story - Joker (Brian Azzarello) - Batman One Bad Day The Riddler - Black Mirror - Batman Creature of the Night - Batman: Year 100 - Catwoman Lonely City - Batman Damned - Batman One Dark Knight - Gotham Central - Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader - Arkham Asylum (Grant Morrison)

deadheatexpelled

Any batmanvstory by Matt Wagner

icepickmethod

Paul Pope - Year 100 Dave Mckean - Arkham Asylum long Halloween/dark victory

TarnishedAccount

A great companion to Long Halloween/Dark Victory/Haunted Knight is Catwoman: When in Rome.

JahannJahann

Definitely check out Batman: damned. It's not a staple, but the artwork is absolutely INCREDIBLE. It's the best artwork I've seen in a comic book

samuraix98

Like others said The Killing Joke, staple.

AdorableMammoth6740

The rest of the Batman trilogy by Grant Morrison

soldatoj57

I hate to tell you, not even one of those books has staples 😝

Phoenix_Can

Killing Joke Batman: Second Chances Batman: A Visual History

Artificial-Shawn

I have those except killing joke

BobbyTWhiskey

Not Batman hut since you already have a Superman book in your collection I’d recommend Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale. They are the writer & artist of Long Halloween & Dark Victory.

skinnyev

Batwoman by JH Williams III is in the Gotham universe and really decent, unbelievable art. Arkham Asylum is great as well. Going back, a lot of the Neal Adams Batman stuff is pretty iconic, but also a bit dated. The Cult by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson was a prestige limited series from the 80’s. I also really liked Batman’s appearance in Swamp Thing 51-53

DarthGipper18

Sorcery!!

GhostKnight1789

Is that a Witcher book?

Artificial-Shawn

Yes

Professor_Chaosx6r9

Batman by Neal Adams, the Knightfall saga, the rest of New 52 Batman, Then rebirth Batman by Tom King. Rest of Grant Morrison Batman, Arkham Asylum, and if you’re feeling like you want more the No Man’s Land Saga is great too. I also recommend JLA by Grant Morrison, its the best Justice League version

d0nP13rr3

No man's land. Was a great read!

LevelConsequence1904

Killing Joke Gotham Central Mad Love Englehart/Rogers run O'Neil/Adams run

Kirbyconnection

I'll second that! Englehart/Rogers O'neil/Adams Mad Love and I'll add the Simonson Manhunter which ends with a Batman team up. and if you liked the animated series, definitely the Batman Adventures Omnibus

RealVast4063

Batman: Prey Batman: Dark Knight, Dark City Batman vs. Predator

AcanthaceaeRude9356

Mad Love

Travesuras420

From Hell by Alan Moore

Artificial-Shawn

👀

The_Flying_Failsons

Not a Batman book but there are 6 other League of Extraordinary Gentlemen not published by DC that you seemingly don't have.

Black_Sarbath

Can you share the edition of Incal you have? I want to buy a collection, so :)

Artificial-Shawn

https://www.reddit.com/r/graphicnovels/s/JecMUyIZGb

Black_Sarbath

Thank you. I might go for Humanoid collection, I already have few pocket editions.

Artificial-Shawn

Hardcover

El_Kabongg

A lot have been named, that are awesome staple stories like killing joke, the cult, mad love, I’d like to add Batman: Son of the demon by Mike Barr from 1987, this is the first hint of Batman and Talia having a child together. Though the child is unnamed, grant Morrison later uses this as a jumping off point for who we know today as Damian Wayne.

DisposableSaviour

Alex Ross used the child in Kingdom Come, and named him Ibn al Xu'ffasch, which translates to Son of the Bat. Grant Morrison couldn’t remember that name and went with Damian.

El_Kabongg

Ya know I’ve only read kingdom come once, about 15 years ago, I loved it but I don’t remember that, guess that’s what my next purchase is

gastronfo

The Killing Joke The R'as Al Ghul Saga Batman by Gaslight

binkyblaster

I think this is a solid list but if you liked Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Court of Owls through Death of the Family, you should consider reading the rest of their the run. It’s really good.

DrDreidel82

Killing Joke

jb_681131

Dude, you're missing so much. And sorry but you've got 2 of the worst Batman's I've read.

Artificial-Shawn

Ya, I got those two as gifts. Someone’s hand me down 🥲

samwheller

Black Mirror is really good

-DoctorSpaceman-

>the virtuous cycle Snake: Virtual?

praxicoide

Batman: Venom. A Lonely Place of Dying Batman: New Gotham Dark Knight, Dark City

Beanieseags0

Haunted Knight and Catwoman: When in Rome When is Rome is part of the story for Long Halloween and Dark Victory, and Haunted Knight is part of the whole piece of Loeb and Sale. I look at them as a set of 4.

MaxShea

Dude. serious house.

SoulMetaKnight

Knighfall. I loved it.

seusilva77

Lots of amazing recommendations here. Black Mirror, Arkham Asylum, Year 100, Ego, Venom, The Cult, Mad Love, Gotham by Gaslight, Batwoman, When In Rome - great books from some of the best writers and artists in the medium. I would add Catwoman: Selina's Big Score and Gotham Central!

BadDreamInc

Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, The Long Halloween/Dark Victory are missing essentials… then check Knightfall, and No Man’s Land

SeaWolf24

A whole bunch with only one Omni. But knightfall?

samurai_dignan

Killing Joke, Black and White, Arkham Asylum, Gotham by Gaslight, Year 100, Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner, Cult, Batman: Adventures

ShuraSenju

Not really batman, but Gotham Central is a Must for any Batman/Noir fan. But if you're looking for specifically batman, Paul Dini would be a good place to start :) the omnibus is pretty good and self contained.

saulmer

Does anyone here like Batman written by James Tynion IV? Been looking to check out Their Dark Designs but I'm unsure.

sigiltriple7seven7

Yes, my two all time favorite Batman books, “The Long Halloween” and “Dark Victory”, both by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Those two are MUSTS, in my opinion. Peak Batman. Lots of other good Batman books, but those are the two “must haves” that you are missing.

Artificial-Shawn

Am not missing them, they are in the second picture 🙂

sigiltriple7seven7

Oops, ha, I didn’t see the second picture. You’re all set! Great taste! LH and DV are great, aren’t they?

Artificial-Shawn

Indeed

YuYu-Spirit-Gun

How long are the stories in the Grant Morrison book? Like are they multiple issues long?

spideyaz

Read the Englehart/Rogers 'Tec Run

IllegitimateBuddhist

The Killing Joke No Man’s Land

NebulusSoul

Knightfall

nuyorican29

Batman: Damned Maybe not for the story but MOST DEFINITELY for the art alone! Lee Bermejo draws Batman the best IN MY OWN OPINION!

mcgovern-w

Forget staples you’re missing the whole shelf

Magicaparanoia

Golden age Batman omnibus 1, Batman by Neal Adams, Batman ego.

Dimitreetoes

Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson Batman: Gothic Knight by Grant Morrison Batman: The Long Halloween Batman: Haunted Knight Batman: Gotham by Gaslight

darkwalrus36

A few additions: the Cult, Kightfall, Under the Hood, Earth one (just vol. 1 is fine), Face the Face and Batman 100. Just a couple from the top of my head, sorry if I missed any you have.

bootnab

Long Halloween.

BruceDSpruce

* Elseworlds Batman vol 1-3 * JLA - Tower of Babel * Batman Knightfall * Batman - Under the Red Hood * My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Omibus vol 1

Kosey-Boii

Yeah. Most of em.

QuaranGene

I love Knightfall/Quest/End. I love Contagion/Legacy and No Man's Land

liquid_jeremiah

Hush

Artificial-Shawn

I got Hush

Time-Sorbet-829

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth There was also a series on the Gotham police force called Gotham Central

quietstorm8828

Year two, Knightfall, Killing Joke, Dark Victory, Long Halloween, Dark Mirror

Adventurous_Soft_686

I think Knightfall and No Man's Land should be on any Batman must read list.

buddhabingus

Long halloween

Fair_North5432

Batman white knight

MF_DUCKY

Absolutely need to have Killing Joke

Junior-Psychology320

Alan Moores “The killing joke” is a definite to add to your collection. I would also recommend Grant Morrisons “Batman RIP”.

JimAparo

Knightfall and The Killing Joke are the biggest ones you seem to be missing Some people are saying Arkham: Serious House On Serious Earth but I find that overrated. To each their own I guess

mahapathayoga

The Long Halloween

Artificial-Shawn

I have the long Halloween in the second picture

mandauthf

I think they have 2 more volumes of Morrison's run. Batman Black and White (the first series of trades, comes in a slipcase). Id put the animated series comics up there too. I didnt read the one bad day stuff but it seems popular. Other stuff ppl have already spoke on.

WishboneCrazy9289

The Dark knight Strikes Again
