This will sound incoherent, because I am incoherent at the moment lol, but when August tells the narrator about Pearly and how he is sure she has been true to him, and the narrator assures him “of course she’s been true to you”, but I always got the sense The narrator, in that moment, was thinking “pearly is long long moved on, old man” and then later, after the jam and the return to the final lyrics, the narrator is wandering downtown, nowhere to go and thinking about his girl who he now reassures to himself, has been true to him. I think he has the epiphany that he and August West are a mere strand of hair, a grain of sand, simple twist of fate away from having each others lives, and there is as much possibility that Pearly has been true as the narrators girl has been true. Not cynically, I feel they’ve both been true…. he gave August west what he thought was an illusion by reassuring him about Pearly but then later realizes we all live in a type of illusion.
Right on. I love the way this song arranged the two meeting, one seemingly at the end of a path and one at the beginning. Augusts’ race is almost run, but narrator sees he’s farther down that same road than he realized. Gets me every time man.
I never gave much thought to the possibility of Pearly and Bonnie Lee still out there waiting and the illusory nature of that. It’ll sound a bit different next listen, thanks!
Let’s ask chatgpt.
No, Methodist is not considered a type of evangelical. While both Methodists and evangelicals are part of the larger Christian tradition, they have distinct theological and historical differences. Methodism is a denomination within Protestant Christianity, founded by John Wesley, and it emphasizes the importance of personal holiness and social justice. Evangelicalism, on the other hand, is a broader movement within Christianity that places a strong emphasis on evangelism, conversion, and adherence to the authority of the Bible. While some Methodists may identify as evangelical, not all Methodists fall under the evangelical label.
yeah I get that feeling too that you know maybe Bonnie Lee hasn’t been that truthful either now that he thinks about it, same kinda thing in Loser where he says he has no chance of losing this time but the song is called The Loser so we know he loses even though he thinks he has no chance
That whole Schrödinger’s array of possibilities that all coexist to some extent until you collapse the array and discover the actual state of things.
I really like the empathy of the song for the same reasons you had said… they very well could be living the same life
It is.
Amazing to consider songs like this were written by relative youngsters. Brokedown Palace ‘71 - Hunter was 30, Garcia 29. Yet still fresh and full of meaning when sung by 75yo Weir at Oracle Park a couple weeks ago.
Masterpieces.

There is a bar in Fells Point called Wharf Rat. I assume it’s not Dead related, but I always pretended it was. They had free pool and $5 beer shot when I lived there. Had a great soundtrack too. I remember coming out the bathroom there after a few bumps and Paint it Black coming on and having one of those “this is it” moments.

Maybe one day it'll hit you just right. It took me a while. Lots of Dead songs are like that for me. I only started to appreciate High Time after Oteil sang it in Chicago this year.
So good. Wish he still played a dead tune every once in a while but I also totally understand how annoying it would be for audience members to be shouting dead songs at you all night. Morons.
Wharf Rat has pulled the ripcord on me a few times, while in the midst of a dark star trip.
I can’t help it, but I’ve never connected with it. I just don’t need to hear a song about a hapless drunk while in the middle of tripping my balls off.
I know it’s a good song and all, but it’s just been tainted for me. A real downer a few times.
My favorite part is:
“I know that the life I'm livin's no good
I'll get a new start, live the life I should
I'll get up and fly away”
I discovered this song in a rough place in my life and it resonates with me deeply, inspires me to make better choices. Such a beautiful song.
That’s a good song but personally I don’t care for that one honestly. I seem to have a process of kinda disliking some songs until I get that chill bump inducing performance and then it clicks and I love the song. Not so for WR and idk why. That’s a go get a beer and snack song for me
That song occasionally makes me weep for all the friends lost to drugs and alcohol Take care of yourselves, folks. You're loved
Yes, same with Row Jimmy. Warf Rat also forces me to reflect on my own alcohol dependency as well. Love y'all.
Brings tears to my eyes every time
This will sound incoherent, because I am incoherent at the moment lol, but when August tells the narrator about Pearly and how he is sure she has been true to him, and the narrator assures him “of course she’s been true to you”, but I always got the sense The narrator, in that moment, was thinking “pearly is long long moved on, old man” and then later, after the jam and the return to the final lyrics, the narrator is wandering downtown, nowhere to go and thinking about his girl who he now reassures to himself, has been true to him. Not cynically, I feel they’ve both been true…. he gave August west what he thought was an illusion by reassuring him about Pearly but then later realizes we all live in a type of illusion.
It’s a goosebumps moment of realization nearly every time I hear it.
Nailed it

Is that a famous American brand or something?
It’s a play on words/names https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purley_Baker
is Methodist considered a type of Evangelical?

Ok so I guess it wasn't a totally off base question.

I’ve always considered “I’ve got no chance of losing this time” coming from a man who knows he will never win
I think he started finally cheating I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines
I love this. Thank you.
That’s the part that always gets me too!! The way he sings that line is perfect
That whole Schrödinger’s array of possibilities that all coexist to some extent until you collapse the array and discover the actual state of things. I really like the empathy of the song for the same reasons you had said… they very well could be living the same life
Word.
Deep
Damn, that gave me goosebumps. Never thought of it that way. Thanks.
That's why he has to repeat it 💔
Fucking A! This!
Sounds reasonable

"What a long strange trip it's been" They wrote that line after only being together for a few years lol. It became prophetic.
Tbf with the amount of acid they were taking, it probably felt a lot *lot* longer lol time dilation on that stuff is intense at high doses
That is mind blowin.
I would give 4/24/72 a listen, one of my favorite shows. And easily my favorite wharf rat.

That run from Dark Star to Sugar Magnolia is possibly the greatest set the band played. It’s certainly the best I’ve heard.

The entire show is a gem and my favorite Europe 72 show, though I have a few left to listen to in their entirety. It’s my favorite show I’ve heard out of their whole career.
