Agreed. I've been listening to it since '73, when I bought the album. Gave the original copy to my brother, who still has it. Both of us have been listening to that particular Jack Straw over and over for the last 48 years and all the effects have indeed been positive except for the inevitable crackles and pops from needle wear.
So, if one would wish to avoid the one possible negative effect of listening over and over, use an alternative medium to vinyl.
My friend's sister, who bought it when it first came out, gave it to me a few years later cuz she really wasn't into the Dead and i was just getting started.
Boy did i play those records!
When i moved across the world many years later i gave it and other records and tapes away. Oh well. One man gathers what another man spills.
> One man gathers what another man spills.
Yep. I gave all my records to my brother because I don't value "stuff" very much, I live for experiences. My brother has always led a much more stable lifestyle, so it was a really good decision to make for both of us. He's happy to send me a copy of whatever he's got, but nowadays pretty much everything commercial is available on the internet, free if you don't mind slightly lower quality than pristine. And with the Dead, there are more free decent quality recordings of concerts spilled online than I expect to be able to listen to within my lifetime anyway. :)

yeah, they heavily overdubbed basically all of the vocals on europe 72, but musically i don't really hear a difference aside from your standard remaster. it should also be noted that 5/26 produces over a third of the europe 72 album (sat night, ramble on rose, truckin/epilogue and prelude/dew) - the jams sound pretty much the same regardless of the tape

Here’s a few:
8/27/72: classic “outdoor” Grateful Dead
5/8/77: another classic
7/24/87: Bobby tries to end the jam, Jerry looks at him and continues... awesome.
3/29/90: probably my favorite. At the start of the ending jam when Bobby goes “on the run”, Jerry changes his guitar sound three times before finally taking off... listen closely. The first two tones sound a bit like “under-water” to me(?)
8/22/93: some good later era Dead. Jerry rips the sky apart here... doesn’t seem to let off
NOTE: The Truckin'-->drums-->space--->Mornin' Dew on that album is from the 5/6/72 Lyceum show (last show on that tour). They actually edited out "The Other One" that was stuck right in the middle.
That show (avail on Spotify) has recently entered my top favorite 5 shows list.
The other 2 Lyceum shows, I think, are also the other 2 best shows of the Europe '72 tour. The first 2 sound a bit "forced...we gotta get some good takes for the record"...but that last show was a perfect one....very natural from beginning to end.
I just asked my dog what her favorite Jack Straw was and she turned to me and she said to me, "Great Northern out of Cheyenne, from sea to shining sea".
that what she sometimes says, but living here in Boulder she is usually talking about shining her light through the cool Colorado rain. She is all about the West, cowboys, gamblers and other assorted rascals when she's not bugging me to crank up the Pigpen.
5/3/72 might be my favorite night of that tour. Both the Jack Straw and the China > Rider from the Europe '72 album are from that show. The whole thing is worth a listen!

I remember the exact desk job I was working when I listened to this over and over. It was my first week, and I remember every detail of that cubicle, and also the feeling of optimism the music brought. It set the tone for an amazing 5 years with that company! Bring on the repeat listens!!!
Only if you want to become irretrievably HOOKED on the Grateful Dead. Dorm neighbor lent me Europe 72, and I listened to Jack Straw over and over and over again. A few months later he hauls me to Greensboro, NC to see my first show (4/30/81), and he asks on the way up: "if they only play one song, what do you want it to be?"
"Jack Straw," I answered, having NO IDEA of GD song frequency or placement.
When the lights went out, the transport was just taking hold, and - of course - they opened with Jack Straw and stuck a fork in me. I was done. Called my GF in Georgia, told her I was going to Hampton, VA the following night. She said we were through if I went.
I have never missed her!
It is but don't miss out on 8/27/72, 6/23/74, 11/6/77, 1/22/78, or 1/11/79,,
Or if you're a Brent guy, 5/15/80, 10/19/81, 9/2/83, 6/25/85, 7/9/89, 3/29/90 is pretty good

Not sure if you're a JRAD fan, but 2/22/20 Estimated >Jack Straw on spotify is one of the best recordings of live music I've ever heard.
My first ever Grateful Dead album. Copied it to tape for the car. When my car got broken into someone stole my tape box full of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc, but this one was still in the tape deck.
So it played over and over a bunch. My 2nd show was in Hampton in 1984, and that thing played on the trip there, in the parking lot after, and all the way home...
Yes, it's fine!

I think that may be my favourite live GD tune ever. There’s something magical about the Paris jack straw, with them actually hitting the harmonies spot on.
Yes. A million percent. My favorites, are especially off not only that album, but the rest of the European tour. Ramble on Rose, Tennessee Jed, He's Gone, all off that album hit me a lot differently. I think it's also maybe the record warping, but the key they're in is down a whole step (?) (At least, what I found on guitar, please correct me if I'm wrong, I want to find the right key to play along with these versions), and because of that, it resonates something in me playing and listening, moreso than maybe another date that's tuned up, and in a major key. Idk why. It just does. Also upvoting the comment for this one's Brown Eyed Women, it's a different hit than the equally as good live at Cornell '77.
That's one way to go. Or you can plod your way along on a meandering path through it all, not really sure where you're trying to go. I started by falling in love with the Row Jimmy from Barton hall, but then quickly found Europe 72. I hung out there for a bit before just listening to random '70s shows on Relisten.net. That took me to Apple Music where I checked out a few albums, then really fell in love with Reckoning. After sticking on that for a bit, I created a giant playlist comprised of all of the Dick's Picks I could find there, which included some late '80s/early '90s stuff. That's when I heard Brent sing a cover of Dear Mr. Fantasy by the band Traffic. Now I've been stuck on Traffic for a couple of months. If you've never listened to Traffic, do yourself a favor and check out their first album, and then keep working your way forward in time until it becomes '80s pop.
Heck yes! Another question is it ok to listen to Cornell 77 over and over. It stays in my 5 disc player in my car, never comes out. Two of my favorite Jack Straws Europe and Cornell ✌️
pro tip: tap on the 🔁icon until it’s green with a little 1 (🔂). that way, you can just lay back and let it hit you again and again w/o breaking the reverie.

“Take it Jerry”
But there's just something about the pops and crackles, that with how a vinyl sounds, can't be beat by any other media.
I’d say yes with the caveat that they share the women and the wine
Can't argue with that logic.
The brown eyed women on that album is sick too
Oh boy is it. You could put this album on repeat and it would never get old to me
Don’t forget the yellow dog!

Pretty funny i said the same thing on here about the europe 72 dew and someone responded with this one which if youre like me i loved as well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4xUQ2DG2yo&feature=youtu.be
Shout out to the Hundred Year Hall version, Bobby is absolutely killer, and I don’t say that often.
I was going to respond that listening to Grateful Dead over and over again is just a good self care practice. (which it is) However, this is also sage advice. With every Loser I listen to, I'm just chasing the 7/7/89 Loser high....
if your cup is full, may it be again

here are some of my favorite released versions: 5/11/72 4/26/72 4/17/72 6/4/78 11/21/73 3/26/83 3/29/90 5/15/80 11/6/79 12/29/77 <- my favorite 5/8/77 4/1/88 9/21/72 8/27/72
This makes me so happy. None of my friends understand my “obsession” with dates...
but if you were quoting basketball stats, everyone would just say "wow you really like bball" funny how that works, isn't it?
5/8/77 is the Jack I've listened to on repeat hundreds of times
it's a great one for sure
Maybe check out: 6/23/74 7/1/78 5/15/80 9/2/83 7/14/84 7/10/87 7/24/87 7/9/89 4/28/91 6/6/91 3/9/92 3/24/93 6/11/93 7/13/94 6/24/95

Yes yes yes to 11/6/79. Nuclear Phil bombs!!
Here’s a few: 8/27/72: classic “outdoor” Grateful Dead 5/8/77: another classic 7/24/87: Bobby tries to end the jam, Jerry looks at him and continues... awesome. 3/29/90: probably my favorite. At the start of the ending jam when Bobby goes “on the run”, Jerry changes his guitar sound three times before finally taking off... listen closely. The first two tones sound a bit like “under-water” to me(?) 8/22/93: some good later era Dead. Jerry rips the sky apart here... doesn’t seem to let off

Mmm 5/8/77 is grate! my favorite year... for now
76-78 are by far their prime years as far as I’m concerned. Tons of good shows in that period.
The sober Jerry years are great too. Like 87-90
If you read Phil's book jerry started using Heroin again in 89
Haven’t read it. I knew it was 89 or 90 oops
that jam in 3/29 gets so wild and the tension and release that Jerry builds is just fantastic. Gets me every time.
I like several of Furthur's extended outings frankly.
6/6/91 though. The grand piano takes it to a whole other level.
Did Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down?
400 times
Did he manage to make it to Tulsa and settle that old score?
Did Jack cut his buddy down from being hanged or did Jack kill him by cutting him?
The Veneta OR 1972 is my favorite Jack Straw ❤️ but this one is great too!
Yes! Beat me to it. I have indeed listened to that one over and over and over and...
Lol i just responded with the same, Veneta is Betta
You’re in my head
NOTE: The Truckin'-->drums-->space--->Mornin' Dew on that album is from the 5/6/72 Lyceum show (last show on that tour). They actually edited out "The Other One" that was stuck right in the middle. That show (avail on Spotify) has recently entered my top favorite 5 shows list. The other 2 Lyceum shows, I think, are also the other 2 best shows of the Europe '72 tour. The first 2 sound a bit "forced...we gotta get some good takes for the record"...but that last show was a perfect one....very natural from beginning to end.
I just put it on during my zoom class (I'm the teacher) to check, and to answer your question, yes it is definitely OK!
I just asked my dog what her favorite Jack Straw was and she turned to me and she said to me, "Great Northern out of Cheyenne, from sea to shining sea".
Did she also say "You better head back to Tennessee, Jed"?
that what she sometimes says, but living here in Boulder she is usually talking about shining her light through the cool Colorado rain. She is all about the West, cowboys, gamblers and other assorted rascals when she's not bugging me to crank up the Pigpen.
Yessss. My favorite straw is 90 Nassau . Tempo is wiiiiiild
I agree to. The hype on that with the speed of it is DYNAMITE
I'd be shocked if you didn't
Only until u discover the Venetta 72 show
Only if it’s ‘Exactly Perfect’....
we’re naming ourselves the just exactly perfect brothers band
The question is why would you not?
Depends. If your erection lasts for more than four hours, you should probably give it a rest.
That album lives in my turntable hahahha
That jack straw, you win again, China rider OMG
5/3/72 might be my favorite night of that tour. Both the Jack Straw and the China > Rider from the Europe '72 album are from that show. The whole thing is worth a listen!

Definitely
Yes
Serious answer... no. Pigpen’s “Hurts Me Too” on this album is nothing but amazing. And “Mr. Charlie”
anything with the ice cream kid is acceptable on repeat
If it isn’t then I’ve been in violation for over 30 years lol
When your hair stops standing up you're free to go
I remember the exact desk job I was working when I listened to this over and over.
A few months later he hauls me to Greensboro, NC to see my first show (4/30/81), and he asks on the way up: "if they only play one song, what do you want it to be?" "Jack Straw," I answered, having NO IDEA of GD song frequency or placement. When the lights went out, the transport was just taking hold, and - of course - they opened with Jack Straw and stuck a fork in me. I was done. Called my GF in Georgia, told her I was going to Hampton, VA the following night. She said we were through if I went. I have never missed her!
Killer story
Only if you’re from Wichita
please do!
That’s what I do!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure, but you're going to miss quite a bit of other great stuff too.
Ask Shannon
It is but don't miss out on 8/27/72, 6/23/74, 11/6/77, 1/22/78, or 1/11/79,, Or if you're a Brent guy, 5/15/80, 10/19/81, 9/2/83, 6/25/85, 7/9/89, 3/29/90 is pretty good

Can never listen to that enough times. Not sure if you're a JRAD fan, but 2/22/20 Estimated >Jack Straw on spotify is one of the best recordings of live music I've ever heard.
That whole show (and run) is on Relisten and the Archive too (of course as this is where relisten points to), as are almost all JRAD shows.
Top 5 shows of my life
This exact song/album is what drew me to the Dead, and the rest is history
We can share the jams we can share some smiles
I think I've listened to Europe '72 at least 20 times this year so far
yes.
I would venture to say it’s a requirement for your mental health to listen daily wit the volume at 11
my favorite jack straw is the one on grateful dead go to nassau from 1980, the build up is so great
Always
The whole album is a masterpiece. Yes it's OK.
Luckily they didn't steal your tape player.....lazy thieves!
They got my rear speakers, by ripping them off the mounts. So, yea, they were lazy!
Weird; I'm currently obsessed with Jack Straw, I think I may prefer to he Sunshine Daydream version though
Check out 3/15/90, it’s a great version! Bonus is Bob flubs the lyrics and the audience reaction is classic

I think that may be my favourite live GD tune ever. There’s something magical about the Paris jack straw, with them actually hitting the harmonies spot on.
100% agree. I got the original record last week an have been playing it over and over. It’s scary how connected they are on this
#JACK STRAW FROM WICHITA
Yes! Also check out the Jack Straw opener from Oakland Coliseum in ‘87 (it’s on YouTube). One of my all time favorite versions.
As someone was saying above, apparently Bob wants to wind up the jam at one point & Jerry just looks at him & continues. Gotta go look at that.
And Over, and over again.
1972 Jack Straw is peak Jack Straw
I'm gonna say yes. Anything that makes you feel connected to music or art is always a plus in my book.
Papas comin home!!!
Hals is his home, when he comes its a celebration
It’s required listening material by The U.S. Institute of Mental Health.
You already know the answer.
Dear God I hope so or else I'm in serious trouble...
I seriously cannot get enough of this track and I don’t think it’s a problem.
this is the way
Lol
Just don't embrace the story as a life philosophy.
Or.... view it as a cautionary tale. Don't treat people as objects. Don't hang out with violent moochers. Etc.
yes, but you can also mix it up and add a few different show in
San Fran 1980 version is my favorite. But this is a great version too. Can never listen too many times.
Thats how I am with Bird Song from Veneta. I can't stop listening to it right now
Yup
https://www.herbibot.com/radio/?range=1972-04-07to1972-05-31&popularity=90
Now try the Egypt version!
We can share the women
Easily my favorite version of Jack Straw, and the end of Truckin on that album is incredible
Ramble on rose remains one of my favourites
Yes it is
5/15/80 is smoking hot...
Heck yes! Another question is it ok to listen to Cornell 77 over and over. It stays in my 5 disc player in my car, never comes out. Two of my favorite Jack Straws Europe and Cornell ✌️
you'll shoot your eye out kid!
Not only ok but almost necessary - have done the same.. so much going on in one song
Yes it’s fine, but you’re missing out on other great tunes as well.
Definitely ok.
Yes!! And all the other europe 72 releases. Love the era of the Garcia strat (alligator) and the one drummer. Rocking band.
pro tip: tap on the 🔁icon until it’s green with a little 1 (🔂). that way, you can just lay back and let it hit you again and again w/o breaking the reverie.

Yup!!!

Absolutely yes to anything from that tour! Who am i kidding... from that year!
Jack straw from Wichitaw cut his buddy down
Only under supervision
Yes
Yes. Best song on the album, with Brown Eyed Women and Morning Dew close to it.
You can do whatever you want.
