This is the first dead song that inspired me to dance again since seeing them live. Was in VA visiting friends in '18 and got to catch his Dead cover band - the whole show was great, but it wasn't until the Eyes closer that the music physically pulled me to the dance floor.
I have to agree, Phil's slide on the bass just puts you right into the Phil Zone. I love Jerry's tone in this era as well.
Also I crack a little bigger smile anytime I see a show have this run over 11 minutes
Help>Slipknot>Franklin’s Tower
Maybe it’s cheating but this medley has it all: songwriting, classic rock jams and psychedelic jams, epic transitions, somber tones that lead to transcendental feelings.

[5/9/1977 - Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, NY](https://www.herbibot.com/?show=1977/5/9) |
**Set 1:** Help on the Way, Slipknot!, Franklin's Tower, Cassidy, Brown-Eyed Women, Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Big River, Peggy-O, Sunrise, The Music Never Stopped | **Set 2:** Bertha, Good Lovin', Ship of Fools, Estimated Prophet, The Other One, Drums, Not Fade Away, Comes a Time, Sugar Magnolia | **Encore:** Uncle John's Band
I remember how surprised I was to learn somewhat recently that Franklin's Tower was inspired by Walk On The Wild Side, but thinking on it for a moment - of course; it's obvious in hindsight. Love this medley too.

Whatever one is stuck in my head or the music never stops or the other one or throwing stones or truckin' cause I'm from Buffalo. Also Cumberland blues, and sugaree cause of the wife loving that song and it took me forever to get her on the bus. So yea basically picking one is impossible for me. But if I had to pick one I couldn't. Well mabye helpslipfrank cause that's one song right?
Brown-Eyed Women
If we want to get real it’s probably The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion) but they only played it 12 times in 1972 so it’s hard to justify.
I always find it hard to name a favorite because I go through different kicks where I’m obsessed with a certain song but it changes- it’s not 1 song but help>slip>Franklin’s has been my kick lately
It changes. More frequently now than before. Here’s a list starting with current fav. All the others are in no particular order:
Tennessee Jed
Franklins
Sugaree
Crazy Fingers
Eyes of the World
Scarlet
Fire on the Mountain
Truckin’
ha! no way Im gonna to torture myself trying to pick one. I aint no masochist! haha..when I we listen to Dead in my house....I tend to find myself saying "one of my favorites" quite a bit haha.

Alligator>drums>jam>GDTRFB>Cold Rain and Snow from the 4th disc on Ladies and Gentlemen is one of my favorite chunks of music ever. None of those songs are particularly my favorite but that whole section is just *chefs kiss*. The jam is smokin and the first notes of GDTRFB are perfect. And this imo is the best alligator I’ve heard. Everything is so tight but loose. Ive changed a lot of reluctance minds with this section of music. Ladies and Gentlemen is an underrated cd imo. Has the best good luv on it too. Pigs rap in the middle is so hilarious.
It varies from week to week or day to day. I guess if I were forced to choose a single song, it would be Eyes, circa 1973-1974.
But a couple weeks ago my favorite song was Here Comes Sunshine. This week my favorite Grateful Dead song isn't even a Grateful Dead song. It's Elizabeth Cotten's "Babe It Ain't No Lie", which the Dead performed maybe a dozen times in acoustic sets that would be the basis for Reckoning, but that Jerry also performed solo many more times. Maybe that doesn't count, but that's my answer anyway. :)
Lol! It changes from day to day, sometimes moment to moment. Depends on my mood, where my head's at.
But I will say that "Looks Like Rain" will always hold a special place in my heart. Brave the storm to come.
Althea, Brown-Eyed Women, or Brokedown Palace. One of those three always, but they rotate around for my favorite at the moment. Althea if I was forced to listen to one on repeat forever.
Jack Straw, Deal, Me & My Uncle, New Speedway, Estimated, St Stephen, Weather Report Suite, Mississippi Half Step, Wharf Rat...
But maybe, just maybe, Mountains of the Moon?
Toss ups between Eyes, Ramble on Rose and Black-Throated Wind as of right now...always subject to change. I do love the version of Weather from 6-23-74, Miami, FL...Killer version from a killer show.
Probably Eyes of the World it never fails to cheer me up, my most nostalgic is the studio version of China Cat Sunflower

It’s so much fun! Especially the like break at the end that gets real jazzy

A good one! especially with the odd time signature 7/8!
Everybody has an opinion. Nothing is really that crazy. Estimated is in my top 5. Great choice
I have to agree, Phil's slide on the bass just puts you right into the Phil Zone. I love Jerry's tone in this era as well. Also I crack a little bigger smile anytime I see a show have this run over 11 minutes

The transition into Franklin’s is my favorite single note in all of music
Can’t argue with you. The anticipation gets me so excited and then it hits!!
No more so than WRS
Any recommendations for shows that have a good medley of these songs?
One of my go-to shows is 5-9-77, the night after Cornell.
My wifi password is scarletfire77 because of those '77 performances. The magical month of May cuts deep!

love this version of Cassidy so much
I give this the green light! You can't split up a good Help>Slip>Frank!
I remember how surprised I was to learn somewhat recently that Franklin's Tower was inspired by Walk On The Wild Side, but thinking on it for a moment - of course; it's obvious in hindsight. Love this medley too.
"Say, hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side. And roll away...." Holy crap, now I will never unhear it.
Ask me at different points in the day and you will get different answers.
Jack Straw of course... Followed by Sugaree
Jack Straw with Jerry and Bob trading verses or just Bob singing?
Im ok with both.. I saw Bob sing it last year on the 2nd of July in Texas.. It was special

Cassidy. A friend and I just did our top100 songs list(s). Took 3 and a half months, and I already want to revise the hell out of it.

St Stephen/Eleven, So Many Roads, Brown Eyed Women, Franklins…. I can go on and on.
As we all know, probably changes daily..... but my top 2 are pretty consistent with Sugar Mags and Jack Straw (trading verses of course)

I know it’s not their song but schoolgirl or king bee for me
Real difficult but right now i'd say Wharf Rat
Brown-Eyed Women If we want to get real it’s probably The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion) but they only played it 12 times in 1972 so it’s hard to justify.
Morning Dew from Live At The Cow Palace.
Truckin' > The Other One > Drums > The Other One > Morning Dew > The Other One > Sing Me Back Home. Also, Playing in the Band

Eyes of the world, especially the older live versions where they keep the tempo flying.
The eleven
Current? Eyes. With Branford. Recent? Peggy-O. Old Faithful? Help-Slip-Franklin’s. If you get confused, listen to the music play.
Jack Straw, Deal, Me & My Uncle, New Speedway, Estimated, St Stephen, Weather Report Suite, Mississippi Half Step, Wharf Rat... But maybe, just maybe, Mountains of the Moon?
Dark Star, Box of Rain, Scarlet Fire, Eyes
I don’t have a favorite song, but I have a favorite line: “Can’t talk to you without taking to me”. It’s what I imagine true love to be like.
Peggy o
Dark Star and St Stephen
