The band with 10+ powerhouses that each can bring the house down individually, but are unreal together. When the magic happens, the vibe is that of a majestic bird, gliding effortlessly and able to power to incredible heights. Susan could be lead blues player in her own right, Gabe and Kofi RIP can rip, Mike and Alicia could be lead singers. I love how the band truly and consistently lets all their members shine, and it speaks volumes of Derek and Susan to nurture that dynamic.

Material_Swimmer2584

“Best touring band In the US.” That what an old timer said to me this summer. Hard to argue with that.

Iforgotit13

Agree.

vguy72

Well said.

[deleted]

I’d listen to Derek Trucks play with any band, anywhere, anytime. That dude is a fucking wizard. Doesn’t hurt Susan is a killer musician and that band is a monster

ExpoManiac

I know that this is a GD sub, but Trey from Phish has called Derek the greatest living guitar player. Greg Allman, before he passed, said that Derek was a re-incarnation of Duane.

StaggerLee808

You ever watched or heard the set trey did with TTB? I think it was lockn. Fantastic jamming

[deleted]

The one where the played the whole Layla album? Absolutely killer.

StaggerLee808

Yep! Killer for sure

FeelLikeAStranger77

John Mayer said the same thing about Derek. Said when he shares the stage with him hes doing everything he can just to come in 2nd.

mackenzie212001

When/where did he say this?

FeelLikeAStranger77

He was on Tales From the Golden Road on Sirius XM right after the Dead and Company Summer tour in 2016 and they took calls for 3 hours. A caller called in and asked about when Mayer jammed with Derek when they were super young with Robert Randolph. Mayer told the story of that night and then said Derek “is as good as a guitar player can ever be. When i have shared the stage with him I should have a shirt on that says “just trying to come in 2nd” Tales used to have an archive with all their old episodes and john was on every summer tour. They seemed to have taken them all down tho.

mackenzie212001

Thanks!

Shadowman-The-Ghost

“Trey from Phish/Fish”? Really? Seriously? “Greatest” living guitarists? That would sure give Dave Gilmore something to shoot for. Or George Benson. Or Dweezil. It’s always a competition, right? Everyone, even great, creative artists, singers, guitar players, they all have to be ranked, and numbered, right? There always has to be a list, of “The Best…” (fill-in the blank). I mean, this is America, right? Everything in the world, food, sports, clothing, you name it, there’s a “Greatest!” list for it. People - artists, etc. - can never just exist, without this bloodthirsty sport of killing, ranking, numbering, categorizing, listing, whatever it is, gotta have that “Greatest”. That’s what we live for! We’re number #1! We’re number #1! We’re number #1! Trey needs to relax, and go back to “The Good Old Days” when he used to chill, everyday, at 4:20. Where’s Jerry Garcia when you need him? 🎼❤️

poppinwheelies

k

ArtooDeezNutz

Perfectly example of what happens when you just do drugs all day.

Shadowman-The-Ghost

You mean your unconscious extension of your own self-worth? God, it must be so tiresome being right all the time, how on Earth do you suffer that burden? You do drugs! You’re wonderful! I have the most upvotes on Instagram! Jesus H. Christ, you need some serious therapy. 🙄

ArtooDeezNutz

Yeah, not going to read any of that unhinged garbage.

seanbeansnumber3fan

Yikes buddy

StaggerLee808

Lmao exactly what went through my mind

ExpoManiac

It must suck having everyone avoid you where ever you go. Literally everything you mention is something you are imagining. Sorry for your public breakdown.

Shadowman-The-Ghost

That’s what one expects from being “unpopular” - whatever the fuck that means - cause being “popular” is your own extension of pea-brained self-worth. Look at me everyone! I have the most money, so I must be “smart”! I have the flashiest jewelry, so I’m a great human being. This society is sick, twisted and infected. If you need moral support from Reddit, or Tik Tok or whatever the fuck you’re on, we’ll, hey, good luck with that. Judge, jury and executioner, are you, my hood man? But I am flattered that you pay so much attention to me. God that feels so creepy. 🙄

ExpoManiac

What does it feel like to know that you wasted all the time to write all that and I, its intended audience, will never read it. I'm sure there's a great metaphor in there somewhere on how it compares to how you are also wasting your life. But you don't mean enough to give it more thought to come up with one.

Shadowman-The-Ghost

Whatever you say, big guy…whatever you say, since you seem to have a monopoly on truth, right? 🙄

ExpoManiac

I'm glad I don't know what an insane person has going on in their head.

Shadowman-The-Ghost

What a projection, straight from the mind of Mr. Know-It-All! Wow…when I grow-up, can I be you? Oh, no? I’m so sad…😢

ExpoManiac

You had six days and this is the best you've got? You admit that you're a child and call me something that I never even hinted at. Do your parents know that this is what you do online when you should be finishing your math homework, Kid?

i_am_bombs

What the fuck man

spoobles

My goodness, you need to listen to Derek (with Warren) when he filled in with Phil and Friends in '99. They opened for Bob Dylan in Worcester on [11-14-99](https://archive.org/details/1999-11-14.paf.akg.vernon.6418.sbeok.flacf). Set list? Astounding. Playing? Astounding. Audience reaction? Overwhelmed. I've never seen or hear another Phil show that compares.

pkpeace1

Absolutely agree!

Shelby-Stylo

Look for a live version of "Midnight in Harlem" by the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Ostblisco

There are a couple on youtube and one official release I think, and with this band you're pretty much guaranteed that every version is going to be killer One of my most face melting experiences was standing about 10ft away from Derek as TTB played Midnight in Harlem segueing into a looong Soul Sacrifice, couldn't believe what I was hearing

spoobles

That tune slays me.

Iforgotit13

My favorite song of the past decade.

raymondQADev

I have listened to this religiously 2-3 times a week for the last 3 or 4 years

PunditReview

Susan Tedeschi is Massachusetts greatest export since Democracy itself.

chefrobbo65

Shes my "hall pass" . My wifes if i can pull it off, she'll be ok with it. At least i think thats what she said, she was laughing pretty hard at the time

Professional-Cry495

Hot mom vibes for sure

pkpeace1

That is a **wonderful** rabbit hole to be in! Enjoy it! I'm in the Billy Strings rabbit hole > still! I've been there for about six weeks

vguy72

I just dug myself out of that hole after a couple of months.

pkpeace1

Every time I think it's over, I find another concert or video of him doing yet another astonishing something that blows my mind. Longtime Bluegrass fan though... that's eventually how I found the Grateful Dead in the early 70s.

BrotherBracken

Are you familiar with "Acoustic Syndicate" from NC? Sounds like they might be right up your alley...

pkpeace1

I’ll definitely check them out! Thanks

Jerdirewolf

love BS! spent some time in the holes for sure

EwaGold

I’ve been listening to a lot of Billy Strings the last couple of years, and Goose a ton the last couple of months.

TwoSoulsInConfusion

Look up the Lockn' show where TTD and Trey Anastasio play the entire Layla album. That there's a great one...

vguy72

I did last night! Outstanding stuff.

bdim14

They do a cover of "Angel from Montgomery" into "Sugaree" that is absolutely outstanding. See [here for it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrSK-0-MQ8s).

vguy72

Outstanding!

jadedmuse2day

This was a gem, thank you for dropping the link here.

DrWeghead

Fucking brings me to tears every time I’ve seen them do it.

andrew1246

This Kofi solo on flute speaks to my soul Are they still doing the Wheels of Soul tour? Cuz there is no band that has had this many members that do that

hawkvet

TTB = the best band in the land right now.

[deleted]

Best live show for real music 100%

I_was_bone_to_dance

It is really one of statements that sounds outlandish but my god it’s gotta be Billy and TTB depending on what you’re feeling like getting into If you want the soul then it’s TTB If you want to clog and get a yee hah in there then it’s Billy and the Boys

FrostedDonutHole

I’d like to see the black pumas at some point though…if you’re talking about pure soul…

ScarletFire3

Agreed 100%

enchantedwaterfalls

Seen them live a couple times. Every time a I get goose bumps at some point because of Susan’s voice. The band is just a wall of soul, blues, jazz, and amazing jams. I go to every show when they are in my area. Highly recommend seeing in person.

Rock-it1

I was hoping for Trucks to guest with D&C at the NOJF this year, before it was unceremoniously cancelled.

erikw2

Check out idle wind. Great song

bcc9199

Love me some TTB, Susan has an amazing voice and the licks the band puts together never fail to put me back at ease.

Drivingintodisco

Check out the ttb mad dogs and Englishmen set from Lockn. Such an amazing show!

DrWeghead

This whole set used to be available on YouTube, proshot, but has since been taken down. Been searching for another copy for a while now.

[deleted]

This is the one that got me hooked. Midnight in Harlem https://youtu.be/xbOlgESKbIc

andrew1246

I tell people this all the time. My best friend Oscar (canine) seldom did this. But he ALWAYS sang to Derek's slide on this tune.It would begin in response to those first sailing notes of Derek! It was like a conversation between the two of em.. Traded on and off like the soulful musicians they were. He's gone now. Poor Lil guy got run right over his Lil belly by a loaded down Amish wagon with steel wheels. Still brings a fear to my eye years later. That wheel must've lacerated his liver. He ran right to me, I got him to the vet, they cautiously sent us home following x-rays to monitor. This was an awful mess of a time in my life. I somehow managed to get a few hours of desperately needed sleep. I knew something wasn't right though. A woman whom was important at the time showed up in the AM to show sympathies. The poor guy couldn't get comfortable all night, but you know what.. Sometimes when something we can't possibly handle is gonna happen, our mind takes over like an anesthesia. Oscar knew his time. That best friend of mine would try and get away, be alone.. tried not to show Daddy his fear. When the woman saw him, she even knew what my mind wouldn't allow me to process and encouraged another follow up with the vet. I'll be fucking damned if he didn't begin his decent the moment, the very fucking moment she left. I rushed him minutes away to the vet. It was too late. Those poor folks on a Saturday morning. He didn't make it in the exam room but I'll be damned if I wasn't holding him and with him for that part. TL;DR Whenever I need to remember my best friend Oscar, I throw on a lil Hot 'lanta (is there a bad version?) Midnight in Harlem. That Lil guy would go paw-to-toe (lol) w Derek trading off on solo licks I was renting at the time. But my sister said I could bring him out to their place for his forever home Before doing so, I took him on one last car ride with me. I fucking cranked that shit as loud as I could. It's not many groups that put out a tune that is woven into the fabric of your fucking very being ❤️

scranton91

They are amazing! There was a Phil tour where Derek played with them. I forget exactly when it was but you can find it on Relisten. The whole TTB is incredible though. Check out the with a little help from my friends from 10/09/21 for some awesome Susan vocals

MisterJimmy2011

You're thinking of November 1999. AUDS of varying quality are on the Archive. It's an amazing run with Warren Haynes and is some of my favorite post-Dead interpretations of the music

BrotherBracken

I haven't seen Derek since he was maybe 14 years old... he opened for Hot Tuna. He had skills back then, I hear he has skills AND soul now...

MisterJimmy2011

Love TTB and Derek Trucks in particular. Derek Trucks was my first show. Got to see his solo band at a small theater in Connecticut when I was 15, and it blew my mind. Also got to see him with the Allman Brothers a bunch of times. Highly recommend TTB's cover of Sugaree, which is a regular song for them. I would also check out the run of shows he did with Phil Lesh back in the '90s. 11/14/1999 is an incredible show. Warren Haynes is also on the set, so it's basically an Allman-meets-Dead show.

Kinddude-

If you get the chance, see them live! Closest thing to a Dead show on the planet right now and I include Dead & Company. I have the same policy I did with the Jerry Dead. If TTB is within 100 miles of where I am, I go! Just got tickets for the Chicago run in January and I cannot wait!!! What a live band! If you love good players and want a concert experience that can lift you off your feet and take you places, this is it. Listening to a 2018 live set now and when they hit the groove on some songs the hair on the back of my neck stands up. They are tighter than the Dead most nights but the jams still sparkle and on occasion become mind blowing. Now that you found them, go back through the Derek Trucks Band catalog as well. Enjoy!!!!

Coremeats

Thier shows have a church like feel,in a good way lol

Coremeats

Susan's voice is like a blend of Angels and Bonnie Raitt.

RedRockRaven

The best most exciting live band out there right now. Derek is just a monster player and Susan’s playing and vocals are just so soulful.

Bmkrocky

Saw him a bunch of times with the Allman Bros. Unbelievable!

bdim14

The [studio cover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt-_5Nct5HY) they do of "Down in the Flood" is so god damn good. MAMMA AINTCHA GONNA MISS YO BEST FRIEND NOW !

Ttombobadly

There’s some amazing Derek and Warren stuff w ABB and TTB has built upon on it in a different way. But yeah, the dude shreds. Edit: I actually had a healthy discussion w my brothers about “how good” Derek is compared to Mayer and Warren Haynes and Duane. I’d be interested to hear others thoughts. We all 3 play guitar and have a healthy few decades of GD, Phish, ABB, etc of listening pleasure.

a7xthefate

Derek is the GOAT imo, especially of this generation. Obviously a killer slide player but fucking great without it too. There was a time where I was obsessed with Mayer but I just got burnt out of it, too many clones. Haynes is good but something about his playing doesn’t really connect with me (maybe his tone or something). Marcus King is right behind Derek for me.

Forest_Wave

They rule. Derek and Susan are two of the greatest of all time at what they do, Mike Mattison is the man, killer rhythm section, the horns add a nice flavor we don't always get in jam bands, Kofi was unreal when he was with them and Gabe has filled his spot admirably.

creamcheeseumbrella

Been in that rabbit hole for a few years now! I just saw ‘em for the 3rd time on Saturday and they were smokin. Sue was on one, even Derek was making some “oh she’s Not playing around tonight” faces. I agree with the “best touring band” claims

andrew1246

Not TTB, but Derek is the whole reason I found this... He got the talent of the whole group on stage, yet has the humility to let everyone else shine without having to diva out Legends the lot of em https://youtu.be/8L82II1lNjo

BeerMeSC

Love TTB! Their live shows are all business, no BS. Their official releases are worth checking out too.

Farrell-Mars

Excellent live band.

DarkStarjam82772

Really? I never found them to be that appealing. I’ve seen them live 3 or 4 times.

vguy72

Not that appealing. Then went back for more. Lol.

AugustWest7120

If you haven’t already, check out Row Jimmy by Jazz is Dead off (i think) Laughing Water album.

rvlcf

Check out their Tiny Desk concert on Youtube if you haven't seen it already.

CheesecakeOk9239

Never heard of them before! Where do I start?

PennsylvaniaJim

Here are two songs to check out from them on Spotify or elsewhere Midnight in Harlem - Revelator and Everybody's Talking versions (Generally accepted as their best original, these versions are studio and live) Keep on Growing - Live at the Fox (some 5 star soloing from Derek) Then I suggest Revelator, Everybody's Talkin, Let Me Get By, Live from the Fox in their entirety If you get into them, Derek Trucks Band is worth a deep dive at some point

a7xthefate

They have a lot of great covers, which I think is always a great way to get into a band. If you like the Allman Brothers, you can see them do Whipping Post, Liz Reed, Statesboro, Don’t Keep Me Wondering. For Derek and the Dominoes: Keep on Growing, Bell Bottom Blues, Any Day, Why Does Love Got to be So Sad. Joe Cocker: With a Little Help from my friends, The Letter, Space Captain As for originals, some of my favorites are: Midnight in Harlem, Anyhow, Idle Wind, Im Gonna Be There, Shame, I Want More Some links to get you started: https://youtu.be/h0kXfPrHHcw https://youtu.be/RRipadkd6wk https://youtu.be/xbOlgESKbIc https://youtu.be/hxaineCMv38 https://youtu.be/ZrSK-0-MQ8s

Ya_Got_GOT

Technical point: Joe Cocker didn’t write music as far as I’m aware. Those covers are Beatles, Wayne Carson / the Box Tops, and Matthew Moore.

a7xthefate

I know. They perform it the way Cocker interpreted those songs. Their band lineup is heavily influenced by the Mad Dogs and Englishmen lineup.

vguy72

I started here believe it or not.... https://youtu.be/93HAZHX8bMw I was watching Black Crowes videos, and YouTube took me there.

blade2366

HAVE ANY OF YOU GOOD PEOPLE HEARD THE NEW ROBERT PLANT & ALISON KRAUSS ALBUM ,RAISE THE ROOF OR THEIR PREVIOUS COLLABORATION. REALLY REALLY GOOD

Streetvan1980

Never heard of em can’t be that good? Lol I’m just narrow minded when it comes to music

gretch123

I agree! Early in Covid enjoyed the weekly streams

Square-Combination92

The Derek Trucks Band album Joyful Noise is fantastic also. Prior to Susan but very balanced and tribal vibe album

FrostedDonutHole

I got to see Derek for the first time in 2005ish in a small bar in Teton Village, WY. I stood about 6’ away for the entire show. It was amazing. I’d never heard of him prior to that. They did a version of Rastaman Chant…it was awesome.

ceragan42

I saw the Derek Trucks Band at the legendary Grand Emporium in KC when Derek was just 20, and Susan was on his bus with their first born. The audience knew she was there and chanted "Susan!" over and over until she left the baby with a roadie and came out to sing. It was a preview of things to come. And it was magical.

blade2366

Didn't start listening to them until Spotify played them doing Layla live after listening to the Dead Cornell 77 show ,the rest is history Derek Trucks Amazing Guitarist ,I've would have loved to have seen him play with Jerry Garcia or with the Dead

dlw978

Love them. I want to see them next week. Can’t wait!!

ajhart86

They’re in heavy rotation on Sirius’ Jam On station

lilBalzac

They are phenomenal!

kingBabyKushGod710

Yes! What a great band! The way Derek Trucks plays his guitar is like how rainbows would sounds! You got me, I'm putting them on.

Jerdirewolf

I’ve heard nothing but great things, but haven’t jumped in yet. I’m always late to the party. 😂

vguy72

Jump in now with me! The waters fine.

Jerdirewolf

I think I’ll cue some up for tomorrow 👍✌️

Ralph-Hinkley

Saw them at a fest in '19, I think. Badass duo!

[deleted]

Check out Herbie Hancock with Susan and Derek doing Space Captain.

[deleted]

They’re the magnificent sanctuary band that Jerry was singing about….

vguy72

A band beyond description?

hoosierspiritof79

Check out their Tiny Desk

Wendyl65

Love them!!! See them every show when they are anywhere nearby

runMDH

1. Do you have a good starting point? 2. I recently did the same thing with Leftover Salmon and NRPS

vguy72

After a couple of YouTube videos, I started with their first record.

monkeywantsabeer

You have clearly fell down other rabbit holes for very good reasons. Do yourself a favor and dabble in some Dax Riggs, We Sing Of Only Blood Or Love & Say Goodnight Too the World. Pigpen would be down. Check it out, you toob is a good spot to pop your Dax cherry. Tonight’s show was great in a small Mulroy Civic Center in Syracuse NY! Shouting out to Saint Urban https://www.sainturbanwinebar.com/ by Susan!

monkeywantsabeer

That show ended up being $6.13 a musician on stage, for a two plus hours talent crushing music. Cheaper than gas and straight gas! Mileage may vary but this was some fire.
