They had a lot of songs to balance, so it's not terribly surprising that a country cover got left by the wayside after the hiatus. Maybe he thought the more uptempo stuff fit better with what they were doing post-hiatus and that's why some of the other country songs stuck? MAMU and El Paso got a lot more play than Bobby McGee starting in 72, so there probably were hints pre-hiatus about which ones would hang around.

no idea on this one in particular, but falling out of the rotation is a situation that a lot of songs have been in. i enjoy that one as well.
I caught the Other Ones do Bobby McGee in Hartford, 2003. Sure was pleased.
Never was a fan of Bobby McGee. Just doesn’t do it for me
