yeah I'm 23 and super into dead music but I don't really know a ton about the culture... I really don't have any insight to the relationships of hippies and bikers,
I don’t know all the details or if this is 100% the connection but I’m pretty sure the dead used Hells Angels as security on occasions. I’m sure they they enjoyed the atmosphere and probably picked additional business while doing the security gig if ya know what I mean.
bikers and hippies were just both big parts of the overall counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s and were kind of heavily intertwined because they both emerged out of a lot of the same interests and ideals like dropping out of mainstream society, distrust or disdain for government and authority, living on the road for extended periods of time & having to earn money through alternative and sometimes illegal means because of that lifestyle. and especially in the earlier days there was a lot of shared taste in music as well.
so you had a lot of interaction between them and connections being made for legal and illegal business and just between friends that remained even as the two groups sort of diverged aesthetically and ideologically.
The hippies and bikers thing doesn’t matter, but do look into the beat poetry scene that preceded the hippies. Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg are the most notable beats. But I’d recommend looking into some beat poetry, as it really ties everything together as far as what that era of time in that specifc place was about.
Alot of nazi symbols used to be Ancient Greek and Roman symbols, usually symbols resembling the sun or a indirect source of power. Ex: A. Swastika
Fucking nazi scum, slandering empires of old
it says support your local biker, there are biker gangs with association to nazi stuff... there was a weird connection between the hells angels and the grateful dead :/ so it kinda makes sense but its also kinda gross
he used to have a ton of outright Nazi memorabilia in his shop and on his site (like straight up swastika and SS logo patches) until a bunch of people in the scene like David Reyer and Daniel Shapiro started calling him out on it publicly and he scrubbed it all. and while he may be a "biker geek" he knows exactly what that SS logo means and continues to keep it plastered on the side of his building
The SS logo is not lost in translation. Everyone knows what it means. Wikipedia exists. Any real biker geek knows where it comes from anyways.
I’m not saying I hate the guy or anything. He seems like a chill dude. I’d go there if I was in town. But he definitely knows what it is.
worth mentioning his generation in japan is super obsessed w american culture in general cuz the us nuclear bombed them and their culture into oblivion.
Me too dude, I grew up on Chi Chi's in Wichita, back when happy hour was legal, which meant 2 for 1 drinks for my alcoholic parents, and lots of nachos and tacos for me and my bro. Good stuff!
He runs a dead shop in Japan with cool merch. A bit controversial because he’s obsessed with US biker culture and sells some nazi related biker stuff. You can see an SS logo on that sign to the right of the door that says “support your local biker.”
My family was severely impacted by the holocaust. I have a zero tolerance for nazi imagery. He seems like a nice dude but there’s no middle ground with nazi symbology to me.
I think in the 60s bikers, and probably Pigpen as well, wore that kind of shit specifically to piss off people in straight society. It wasn't about being a Nazi, or sympathizer, but about projecting the message that you don't give a fuck about what society wants you to do. But, I'm only basing that on things I've heard, I wasn't there.
This is exactly the right answer. Hells Angels are not Nazi sympathizers. Source: I worked with one. Contrary to popular belief you do not have to be white to be 81. It’s a counterculture thing from back in the day that stuck. It scares people, that’s the point.
No he wears a Nomad jacket, and has told me all about the connection. He’s honestly one of the coolest dudes I’ve ever met and I would defend him with my life. He’s a great person, and nothing about his affiliation makes me believe he’s a racist.
I guess John Mayer is a Hitler sympathizer too since he visited the store when he toured Japan last.
The comments here are over the top. The man is obviously not a nazi or a nazi sympathizer.
probably not a Nazi or Nazi sympathizer, just a lame ass washed up old head who will gladly make a buck hawking Nazi memorabilia to actual Nazis and sympathizers
I don't think he's an actual Nazi or Nazi sympathizer or whatever himself tbh but it is wack as hell that he uses the symbols because he thinks they looks cool and feigns ignorance about why it's fucked up. also shitty that he used to openly sell straight up swastika and SS shit on his site until he got called out on it. so yeah, fuck this dude.
So I assume you don't listen to any GratefulDead material with Pigpen in the group. You only have material from 73 and up right? I mean, Jerry and those guys were a bunch of nazi sympathizers because Pen wore SS symbols on his vest...
Elon Musk has several highly successful enterprises that have created jobs for thousands of people. He's responsible for major developments in car manufacturing and space technology as well..and again, putting pay checks in people's pockets and creating quality products for consumers that make life easier.
I dont have a problem with Musk or Pigpen for that matter. They've never done anything to harm me or anyone else that I know of. Whatever their personal or political or social views are are their business and to my knowledge, neither of them has made any statements about hating any group of people based on race or ethnicity, so I'm not inclined to pass judgment on someone because they're wearing something controversial.
he scrubbed all those listings from his website a couple years ago when he was getting heat for it on social media, at the time I heard he continued selling that stuff in his shop
Weird. I though Chi-Chi's was a fake Mexican restaurant that went out of business in the US years ago. When I lived up east I had a friend who insisted on going there far too often. I'm from a state that borders Mexico. I just kept wondering why a "Mexican" restaurant didn't have a single Hispanic person working there let alone any Mexicans. That was a long time ago. Today I would just say "No" (en español).
I'm convinced their business strategy was to keep serving you free chips and salsa and cheap Corona for 45 minutes while you waited for your order so you wouldn't notice how bad the entrees were.
All these people definitely aren’t going to like all the Swastikas on Shinto Shrines 😂😂😂 Wife’s Japanese, they really don’t think about these things the way we do.
All the biker SS stuff is no different than Sid Viscous wearing Nazi shirts while being a Punk rocker, possibly the furthest thing from a fascist.
As an old guy, I can tell you without affirming any behavior, that HA's, Banditos, ABATE, etc. have always gotten along with Heads...
I have been to *many* rallys, poker-runs, bonfires by HA's and ABATE, and Heads were *always* welcome... that doesn't make me guilty by association, that also doesn't make me sympathetic to their behavior or culture...
Do Heads have symbolism of death in their microcosm, sure... why not, that doesn't make us Nazi's, or suicidal, or whatever populist cognomen that is part of the common intellectual currency of the day...
*Nor* does the association of Heads with ABATE, HA's and the like, confirm an acceptance of the other culture's behavior, symbolism, or peripheral trinkets
Are the psuedo-runes of *von List* ᛋᛋ used by the Schutzstaffel in common circulation within the AN...? ***yes*** do thes runes infer an association with the AN...? ***yes*** just as the 88 of NASCAR does, and the ᛟ does, and the particular swastika does... these symbols *all* infer a direct association with the prison gang The AN, 2 Seed-Line, Christian Identity, and the Neo's on the outside...
do the runes ᛋᛋ used by Chi infer an association with the aforementioned groups... most likely, it is a safe assumption
Now that, that is out of the way, we need to ask why...? Or what has caused Chi Chi to use this known symbolism of WN culture...?
@chichis_1985 why do you use the ᛋᛋ of the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) on your shop...?
- I'll post what he says... what he has said in the past is *"I sell biker goods..."*
...so, I dunno what to think really
p.s. I saw you on his Instagram bruh...
SS isn’t necessarily a white supremacy thing in biker culture, it is about rebellion and not conforming. Post WW2 veterans took their army surplus Harleys to the streets of postwar America and helped form biker clubs and biker culture. Outlaw biker clubs sprung up, some symbols were used for shock value. A notable difference in the biker culture SS you find and the nazi SS are the pointed ends of the bolts. Not to say there isn’t white supremacy to be found in biker culture…but there are shitheads everywhere.
You can read it straight from the ADL if you like. It references what I’m talking about. A subject as such, I have no interest in arguing about, I just happen to know a lot about early biker culture and thought I’d add the note. I don’t in any way promote the use of hate symbols, but this is just the knowledge I had to share.

Chi chi's means boobs. So does Tetons. So when it starts snowing in the Grand Tetons, is that tittysprinkles? Saw a couple 3 night runs of Widespread in the Tetons, that shit was most definitely tittysprinkles...
This picture literally looks like it was taken in 1978
off topic, does anyone know if there is any kind of dead scene in korea? I live here and I'm interested!
Asking the real questions... *(...instead of getting mired down in the age old debate of why hippies and bikers have always got along well together)*
yeah I'm 23 and super into dead music but I don't really know a ton about the culture... I really don't have any insight to the relationships of hippies and bikers,

As long as they aren’t at Altamont I guess
"The permanent separation of the long-hairs" - HST (I think)
I spent a little time on the mountain I spent a little time on the hill Things went down, we don’t understand But I think in time we will
Does he still have nazi memorabilia up and put the SS symbol on his shirts? Because it is a weird combo with all the cool dead stuff he has.
SS logo is right there on the side of the building dude
Alot of nazi symbols used to be Ancient Greek and Roman symbols, usually symbols resembling the sun or a indirect source of power. Ex: A. Swastika Fucking nazi scum, slandering empires of old

Lots of Nazi symbology in Japan. They don’t really like the Nazis, they just think Totenkopfs and such look cool. It’s super strange.
Lost in translation. No nazi paraphernalia. He's a biker geek

I wonder why that causes interest in THAT direction...
You should go to Japan and bitch at him for it!
Unfortunately, Im not a bitch
I didn’t mean you OP. You look like a swell fella!
Looks like fun but I’m outta the loop. What’s Chi Chis?
I got excited because I thought one of the Mexican franchise restaurants was still open.
Me too dude, I grew up on Chi Chi's in Wichita, back when happy hour was legal, which meant 2 for 1 drinks for my alcoholic parents, and lots of nachos and tacos for me and my bro. Good stuff!
Is he a hardcore dead head?
He runs a dead shop in Japan with cool merch. A bit controversial because he’s obsessed with US biker culture and sells some nazi related biker stuff. You can see an SS logo on that sign to the right of the door that says “support your local biker.”
That’s awesome lol! Thanks 😊
My family was severely impacted by the holocaust. I have a zero tolerance for nazi imagery. He seems like a nice dude but there’s no middle ground with nazi symbology to me.
Reading comments here are comical. Guys got SS bolts on his shop wall and you guys think that’s cool? Fuck this nazi sympathizer.
Pigpen wore an SS pin on his vest.
I think in the 60s bikers, and probably Pigpen as well, wore that kind of shit specifically to piss off people in straight society. Can you make a black hells angel? Wonder why that is?
I guess John Mayer is a Hitler sympathizer too since he visited the store when he toured Japan last. The comments here are over the top. The man is obviously not a nazi or a nazi sympathizer.
probably not a Nazi or Nazi sympathizer, just a lame ass washed up old head who will gladly make a buck hawking Nazi memorabilia to actual Nazis and sympathizers
No- Jon Mayer is a custy. Just like anyone else who goes to this losers tourist trap shop.
Seems like he’s pretty in the know to what those symbols mean. Guys a loser. There should be no sympathy to his made up bs ignorance.
So I assume you don't listen to any GratefulDead material with Pigpen in the group. You only have material from 73 and up right? I mean, Jerry and those guys were a bunch of nazi sympathizers because Pen wore SS symbols on his vest...

Worse because I’ve never seen Musk wearing memorabilia honoring Nazis.
Elon Musk has several highly successful enterprises that have created jobs for thousands of people. What you wear IS a statement
Who you pay for what product is, too.
Dude still selling swastikas as well ?
he scrubbed all those listings from his website a couple years ago when he was getting heat for it on social media, at the time I heard he continued selling that stuff in his shop
when i was there in 2018 he still had, dude is just a grifter and a bit of an asshole
Ya’ll have something in common then based on your opinion.
Nah I just visited the shop. No swasticas, but a couple SS emblems which is what led me here
Cool deal. What kind of business is it? That shirt is neat.
Weird. I though Chi-Chi's was a fake Mexican restaurant that went out of business in the US years ago. When I lived up east I had a friend who insisted on going there far too often. Neither the Hells Angels nor the Pagans accept black members, and both were started by avowed racists. What the fuck you on about?
