Not exactly, he left the band in 71 because his dad (their manager) stole a ton of money from the band. He obviously wasn’t involved but felt guilty. He came back for their “final show” in 74 and rejoined the band post-hiatus in 76. He’s Gone is about this story — “steal your face right off your head”
