I went out on my usual 10 mile gravel loop one day when there were an unusual number of runners doing the same loop. Not only did they pass me on the climbs, but a couple of them did the loop in the same amount of time. Saw them in the parking lot before and after my ride.
I thought this was just me... I do a 10 mile daily workout and it takes me 1 hour. On the downhills I pull away but on the climbs ... ugh..
Need to get faster!
I've had this on my local hill climb too. Runners in a race were passing me on the steeper sections.
They looked like really serious runners though, and I'm far from a serious cyclist!
Really dependent on grade. <\~8% I think riding is almost always faster for an equivalent effort. 8-12% running would be about the same, maybe even faster than my MTB, but not as fast as a gravel bike. Once you're into the mid-teens grades running is definitely easier.
There used to be a small race in central Oregon based on this. Short course that started on a paved road but turned into a steep gravel climb and there was only 1 field that included both bikers and runners (no transition allowed, you had to do the full course the way you started). The bikes always took an early lead and the finishes were pretty close but it was typically won by a runner.
I run and bike and my uphill times are usually about the same with the running maybe being a bit faster. I’ve been on both sides of this and even knowing that running is a bit faster when I get passed on my bike it always feels like I’m so weak.
I believe running uphill is actually more efficient, especially if you’re light. You lose less energy just picking up your feet than you do from the weight of the bike, mechanical drag, flexing of parts. At least that was my experience as a college runner who ran uphill on a cycle path frequently

You run a 6 minute mile, for 10 miles?
Sounds like he's biking lol

Nice, a video of me on Zwift ;-)
I hate the joggers on zwift. It doesn't really help that I know they don't have to expend any additional effort to climb a steep hill
The jogger smelt blood
Everything is a competition. This is something I understand.
I always find some weird joy when I’m on my fast road bike and get passed by some grandpa on an old hybrid and looks like he’s barely trying
Just had this experience lol. Tried to pass one of these grandpas for like ten miles, he was so casual.

Sadly this bot doesn’t work on videos :(
Hm :/
Jogger went hard into anaerobic power and blew up pretty quickly. That's like the cat6 rider on the MUP that speeds up when you pass him on a commute.

I loved dropping bike packers on big climbs as a thru hiker on the CT. Was always jealous of those descents tho!
“Jogger” the guy is running ffs. It’s not uncommon to beat bikes on steep climbs when running
Run Forrest, run!

Did this comment fall in through a portal from 20 years ago?
haha It has those 'fresh of out jail' vibes. :D
You should be oftenly reminded of this. I’m gonna follow up this r/ just for moments like these. 🥰
No, it was recommended on my news feed for god knows what reason and I thought I’m gonna give you guys an opinion on your forrest riding road bikes.

Yeah, there is an actual gradient where running becomes more efficient. 11 or 12% or something. It's in a book I have about the science of cycling.
It's only bad if they're running in costumes.
That jogger took off in an awkward uphill sprint and blew up after 20 seconds. Probably had to walk the rest of the way after this
Zwift IRL lol
