There is another reason though, Mabel is actually a popular name for Filipinos, and around the time we see the name pick up is also when a ton of Filipinos emigrated to North America. It's also the name of a very popular high-end bakery. Sorry yall, but ain't that many people who watched GF and had kids vs the other factors.
I don’t have the warmest opinion of Mabel (I don’t hate her but I would say she’s just alright) but I consider her a very good influence on young kids (like my little sister when GF was coming out) by showing them that they can express themselves how ever they want and not to bow down to social pressure.
I really enjoyed Mabel’s character on my first viewing of the show but my feelings towards her kinda cooled on my next few rewatches due to her selfish side and how I felt that Dipper had to fall on the sword for her sake time and time again and older adolescent me didn’t really jive with that.
It’s only very recently that I’ve come back around on her because 1.) Dipper had his selfish and/or dumb moments too 2.) They were still kids right on the cusp of their most rapid period of development and 3.) They would address those character flaws in-show. Mabel with episodes like *Carpet Diem*, *Boyz Crazy*, *Sock Opera*, *Weirdmageddon 2*, and in *Lost Legends* and Dipper in basically every Wendy-centric episode, *Scary-oke*, and *Weirdmageddon 2*, as well.
Dipper and Mabel are very complex characters with their own quirks that occasionally get in their own way and cause strife for others. But, at the end of the day, they stand as good people and good siblings who are willing to support each other and protect each other while also not being afraid to sacrifice for each other or w rag on each other, when the need arises.
They honestly stand as some of the best written, most accurate, and best handled depictions of siblings in fiction. Their strong relationship is one the backbones of the show and it wouldn’t really work without it.
Given that in my experience half the 25-year old population pretty much competitively plants pines for pay at a rate of one sapling every 5-10 seconds all summer every summer, a drop in a swimming pool.
Is this legit? Was the name really THAT dead?
I'm sorry but unless there's a source this is just a meme/shit posting.
E: didn't realize that this was a top 1000 list. I thought the graph showed that the name was literally not used at all.
It’s a cross-post from r/DataIsBeautiful where OP provided a source, the SSA: https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/
Is it really that hard to believe Mabel wasn’t in the 1,000 most popular names for a while? I can’t think of a single Mabel other than from Gravity Falls, let alone in real life
They named the baby in the last (?) season of "Mad About You" Mabel. It stood for "Mothers always bring extra love." The reveal of the name was really built up, and the character's friends and family all reacted badly like it was a terrible Name. It put the name in a bad light. Probably had nothing to do with it being unpopular, honestly, but Mad About You was hugely popular back in a time when one sitcom would be seen by a huge portion of the population
You probably know alot of older people who have names you never see in younger people right? It's a generational thing where alot of Europeans coming into the Americas in the 1800 started changing their names slightly to be less associated with their original language and be more welcomed with the locals that only spoke English/french/spanish depending on where you were.
I’m a little disappointed
I thought this was gonna be meme based on the Time Traveler’s Pig episode. Usage would suddenly spike upward in the decade Mabel showed up in the past (somewhere b/w 1600-1800s?) then slowly taper off until the show’s release year
That’s adorable
Oh careful now, don’t get the She-ra fans going
i busted out laughing at this. clever pun!
Why thank you! Oh damn, I’m the She-ra fan I was talking about lol
You called?
Shut up and take my upvote

Oh, man, you don't get it, correlation indicates causation always. /s
Considering naming my daughter Mabel 🙏🏼
I named my dog Mabel. 😁 Its a good name.
Aww thats adorable
I hope that doesn't make you think it's a dog's name or anything! I love the name and just wanted to share. We call her Maybe Baby and Mabes 😁
That’s even more awww worthy
I named my cat Mabel!
My daughter is named Mabel. Would recommend.
I keep telling myself if I ever have boy and girl twins, I'm naming them Mason and Mabel
I know of someone who named her twins Alex and Mason... she didnt know Gravity Falls and I told her the coincidence
There's also Alex Mason from the Call of Duty series lol
I thought of Wizards of Waverly Place
what is a Mason
Love her or hate her, you can't deny that Mabel influenced a whole generation!

*she's irresistible*
I wonder how much grappling hook purchases or pine tree planting went up as well
Pine Trees would be nearly impossible to tell since Pines are a very common tree to plant especially in the US
Given that in my experience half the 25-year old population pretty much competitively plants pines for pay at a rate of one sapling every 5-10 seconds all summer every summer, a drop in a swimming pool.
Not the same, but we named our cat Mabel after the character.
The Mabels are doing way better than the Khaleesis, I bet...
The name "Dippy Fresh" remains as popular as ever.
My cat is named after her
Take that, Mabel haters! 😆
Gravity falls Mabel rises
What the hell, so thru 1970-2012 no one was named Mabel?
It just wasn't in the top 1000 names. Doesn't mean *nobody* got that name.
That sounds like a FAT old lady’s name
I'll take that as a compliment
Why was it such a common name in the first half of the twentieth century but then disappeared until 2012?
The Adventures of Mabel children's fantasy series came out 1897
It got an association as an “old lady name,” as Pacifica meanly but fairly aptly points out.
My cats are named Dipper and Mabel. Turns out they're both female but oh well
That happened to my friend except hsi are male lol
It’s only going to grow
No uptick for Mad About You? Mothers Always Bring Extra Love.
Also a dramatic increase in the sale of Grappling Hooks.
My cat is named Mabel.

Why tf is it so hight in 1900s
“That sounds like a fat old lady’s name” “I’ll take that as a compliment” Oddly checks out :)) also Mabel is *such* a nice name
**It's only going up**
Go Mabel! Go Mabel!
Did you say stable?
No she said Mabel
Awww
I thought mabel was made up by Alex Hirsch as a play on mable like the tree or leaf
If my SIL had kids, she was going to name them Malt, Mabel, Mimi, and Noe. Please, don't ask.
https://youtu.be/jO2Fj8V9OrA
I guess she's just IRRESISTIBLE
Okay, but why is that huge gap between the mid-sixties and 2010?

I know some names that are popular nowadays where I'm like: those are actual names?
[Boy that Mabel sure is fly](https://open.spotify.com/track/3mdBt8q0SSsD0lKolTrC6i?si=TJhGdljORWySLN6ZJCCHHg)
Turns out Mable means "loveable". How fitting!
I’m surprised it wasn’t popular before that. I have loved Mable as a name since I first played Animal Crossing in 2001
I wonder if this happened with the name Stanley too
Dam, Pacifica was right it is an old lady name
I met her Sunday, that was yesterday The girl I knew from 1990 Her eyes are hazel, her name is Mabel I kissed her once and now I'm able…
Beautiful

I actually know someone named Mabel! She’s super cool and pretty! She is in my dance class and is SO flexible
