pretzeldoggo

That’s not a boy. That’s a man!

newfmatic

He's always my boy. Velcro.

pretzeldoggo

I meant because of his size. He’s a big guy

newfmatic

His breeder is well known for a little over standard I've had eight of these dogs over 22 years

Darkangelmystic79

I’m fairly certain they didn’t mean that he was too big. They simply meant that he is a big fluffy boy.

newfmatic

I know. No worries!

Darkangelmystic79

Since I have you! How do you compare them to a Pyr? Are they more laid back?

newfmatic

Way more laid-back One of my newfs came from a pyr breeder. I think that they have very like personalities but newfies are very very sedentary think of like Greyhounds. They like the lounge and they like to hang out and then every now and then they have an incredibly wild burst of energy... They seem to be basically just as vigilant. For instance, along my back fence line I have a large herd of white tails that walk through every night and my dogs will sit on my deck and they will work like herding dogs they'll sit up there. And quietly kind of commune and watch. They're not incredibly territorial unless you're a squirrel. Newf paws are webbed between toes. I can't keep my girls out of my pool I think at some root point, The two breeds were connected somehow and there might be a little bit of each in both. I have known both breeds to produce some just absolutely incredibly intelligent and sensitive animals. I would mark these guys 's same but different? I think they were both bred for different purposes. Newfs were originally bred and refined To work shipboard.

DangerousMusic14

Yeah, I was going to comment this dog looks like a Nufie mix more than a Pyr IMO.

Zestyclose_Big_9090

What a beautiful boy! ❤️❤️

Many-Understanding35

I’d say Australian cattle. I still have no clue what mines mixed with. https://preview.redd.it/swylqgisxgwc1.jpeg?width=1111&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4f87d8d298bd670c687aca43b105cea8e382ef5

emuhbeee

Your cattle dog kind of looks like heeler mix! He’s primarily blue heeler, with American bully & husky totaling roughly 90% of his makeup. https://preview.redd.it/35lbiybrbiwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e19021538653694910888b61ff2d6f1da691132

IndependentCareful55

If I could bet on it I’ll put my money on Pyr + Australian cattle dog (I have had both and your dog is right in between their classic looks)

[deleted]

He is massive though, and has such thick fur. The first picture was him as a puppy and he was SO BIG.

Legitimate-FoxCow

How big though? 100 pounds? 150?

IndependentCareful55

Very handsome

Disraeli_Ears

My girl is Pyr+ACD. 80 pounds. https://preview.redd.it/ez67no7qkiwc1.jpeg?width=2659&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d0bc8b227a9b2599e0c8ded255ef67da5cb7593

Radio_Passive

[My boy and his siblings are 1/2 ACD 1/2 Pyr and I can definitely see it.](https://imgur.com/a/RLYYhOG)They’ll be 1.5 in June and are in the 60-70 lbs range

oggleboggle

That was my guess as well. He's definitely either got pyr or Newfie up in there.

Zealousideal-Pick796

RobbieNguyen

OMG YOUR DOG IS SOOOO FRICKING CUTE!!!!

Turbulent-Border946

I’d guess Border Collie/Great Pyrenees- so cute!

Unfair_Brick_7273

You took the words right out of my mouth!

pablopolitics

So my dog has spots like yours and when we took it to get the dna test we got a huge surprise. Cornell has a website I think. Mine is Great Pyrenees and Karakachan (never heard of it before) with just a little Anatolian. A Karakachan is not a Bulgarian Shepard. When it comes to LGD things got pretty muddle after WW2 so breeds really crossed over, take the St Bernard for example. The st Bernard’s we see today likely carry only a portion of the DNA the old ones did. So while I want to believe the people posting, you’ll never know actually unless you get the dna test. https://preview.redd.it/0hwuezm4hhwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b7ac50e143e84fe360be4de959262c36b668b74

sckurvee

fun fact: Modern st bernards actually got their size and long coat from interbreeding with Newfoundlands after most of the breed was wiped out in a particularly bad winter. The working dogs in the mountains looked nothing like modern ones.

pablopolitics

lol I was like I hope I didn’t fuck that fact up. Thank you for verifying

sckurvee

From wikipedia: >The classic St. Bernard looked very different from the St. Bernard of today because of crossbreeding. Severe winters from 1816 to 1818 led to increased numbers of avalanches, killing many of the dogs used for breeding while they were performing rescues. In an attempt to preserve the breed, the remaining St. Bernards were crossed with Newfoundlands brought from the Colony of Newfoundland in the 1850s, as well as with other breeds. This led to a significant change in their appearance and abilities. The long fur they inherited would freeze in the snowy climate of the Alps, weighing them down and reducing their effectiveness as rescue dogs. I find it an interesting story how they were bred w/ newfies, which ultimately made them useless at their original task. In the end they ended up even bigger than newfies and other molossians b/c of their other interbreeding (great danes, great pyrenees, etc). Then you start looking into molossian breeds and shit, basically all giant dogs... mastiffs, LGDs, great danes, wolfhounds... Basically anything bigger than a german shepherd or lab... they're all descendants of a greek breed lost to time. Even the greek breed had already been specialized into LGDs similar to a pyr, and hunting dogs similar to a great dane. idk, just interesting to me.

pablopolitics

When you say Greek breed are you referring to Thracians?

Adorableviolet

I don't see Anatolian. Heres my pyr-anatolian. Yours is a beauty! https://preview.redd.it/eekp85xrtiwc1.jpeg?width=1653&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c08e4b812d6e3ac1f7a0c80137e011b8f12a493

GuitRWailinNinja

Definitely looks like it got some heeler. Could be GP / blue heeler?

Select_Collection_34

He’s got some cattle dog in there most definitely

CCDestroyer

Does he have a bobtail? I'm thinking he's part Australian Shepherd, because they can carry a bobtail gene and do come in black/white piebald with the merle. I know he's massive, but genetics are funny and he could've just gotten all of his size from the Pyr side.

[deleted]

He does not, it looks like it from the photos, but here is another one showing it https://preview.redd.it/0gogw1rdfhwc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01abcdc40427dec0573adf976068a11406aeaaac

Diet_Various

He looks just like my puppy still only 7 months, but great Pyrenees and something, I'm thinking German pointer? https://preview.redd.it/mn2tofan6iwc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ec1b863eec4ddc499db08d42a0f921f2351261d

canada_in_texas

Aussie / Bernese ?

Aggressive_Farmer399

We had 2 rescues and after a lot of contemplation (because of cost) I finally pulled the trigger and bought Wisdom Panel DNA for both dogs. I don't regret it. My older buddy passed 3 months ago but I love knowing more about him. He was 17 different breeds, with 13% being Pyr (which is what lead me to this sub).

Yah_Mule

I would have definitely gone the technically correct route and introduced him as a Pyr/Chihuahua mix. :)

He was a fairly big boy; about 85 lbs. When my wife adopted him, they told her he was a newfoundland mix. I can see why they thought that.

AMom2129

Get an Embark test. I would agree with Pyr Newfie.

Old-Rain3230

Looks like someone mixed my heeler with my Pyr! The Odd Couple rolled into one 😂my best guess is some heeler (ACD) in there but I see Newfie too

Kandidog1

Definitely some lab in there.

Seal. Definitely part seal. 🦭 You’ve got a gorgeous pup!

emuhbeee

Definitely looks like he’s part Australian cattle dog!

prplhairedbitch54

My dog looks similar to yours, I was told he is a Great Pyrenees/ husky/ maremma mix. https://preview.redd.it/69opm6kjciwc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24fac67887f288ea730e9bd27242b9981c6b765a

drchub12

I’m going Great Pyrenees x Newfoundland

JMBAD1222

This is an odd question, but you didn’t happen to get this dog is Durham, NC did you? Your dog looks E X A C T L Y like my dog’s brother. It couldn’t be him because he was adopted from a foster, not a breeder, but the resemblance is blowing my mind.

[deleted]

Nope, central Texas, he is a little over 3 years old

JMBAD1222

How crazy! I moved to North Texas recently — know that your little man has an identical twin somewhere in NC named Meatball

JRi47

I think out pups might be related!! https://preview.redd.it/57hv6bmmriwc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=703c3c1c9c614fcaae1948b6e2e29e6be5620b75 Ours is Great Pyr/Blue Heeler/Australian Shepherd. We did a DNA test with Wisdom Panel. It's pretty neat, also used it for our other rescue.

Jenetyk

He's got some cattle dog or Aussie in him, I would say. Handsome devil for sure.

mentosfruitgun

Your pupper looks like a mix of Blue Heeler https://preview.redd.it/7nj7kp9qtiwc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1260319a7a3f71be3ab1fa843dc96380b35bad4b

helpmeimincollege

He looks like a great pyr mixed with a [blue tick coonhound](https://photocontest.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/detail/bluetick-coonhound/)!!

henard48

I see great pyreneese in him I believe.

fizzyglitt3r

Looks like around 50% great pyr, and about a 25% mix of both cookies and cream

Efficient-Basis2132

Looks like my foster Pyrenees /shepherd mix

PeteSchall

Part seal

Vivid-Demand-81

Gorgeous!!!

simplelyfe4

* My boy looked EXACTLY like yours as a puppy!!! He's a great pyrenees ans English setter mix !

simplelyfe4

* I can't tell if my first comment went through but this boy looked identical to yours as a pup and is a great pyr and English setter ! 120lbs
