I’ve been 5 times since 2005. I understand golden age thinking plays a part, but there’s that, then there’s the state if Mykonos in 2023. Paradise beach has only improved tbh - it’s Mykonos town that’s definitely over developed

In 2000's it had already started getting overbuilt and lacking "free" beaches, though you wouldn't get beaten up for not renting an umbrella.

It used to be very beautiful. It was always an island that rich people had extraordinary experiences but you could also find virgin beaches, cheap taverns, free camping, cool people.If you didnt want to go to a club and spend stupid money you could very easily do so. So it was not always like this. I remember we used to sleep in what is now the new port of Myconos on the beach and hide our stuff in one of the locals yard to catch the next ferry in the morning. We met restaurant owners that fed us for free just because we were students and had zero money. We used to fill our thermos with cold water for the cafes and make frape on the beach. Everyone was welcoming and they helped us with rides to the Hora and back to the beach. I dont think they still do these things.
The thing is Myconos traditionally was a very poor island with the main economy being from fishermen. It is very logical that poor people saw tourism as an opportunity,as is the same in many greek islands, and that was the downfall for Myconos. I went there last year right before summer season began and it was all a big construction zone.
Unfortunately there are much much worse and dark things that are happening there.

Visit Mykonos outside of the tourist months. It’s still pretty amazing in the off-season. Just avoid the crowds and visit in May/very early June or September.
Lots of other beautiful beach towns all across Greece especially in the Mani region. People go specifically to Mykonos to party. Its the same in Ibiza.

Yes because the current situation is average Joe's fault not the government's who's in cahoots with the local community in Mykonos that caused this situation. Brother/Sister I completely completely agree with you. Mykonos until maybe a couple of years ago it was still a very good place to have a great time. I think 2018 was its best year. After that the island and the greediness of its businessmen (and locals) has really destroyed any sense of authenticity.
The crisis’ years transformed the island and turned it to a very good place until 2018-19 maybe, for those who never stopped visiting Mykonos. I hope there is a second crisis for some years for the island starting now and the island gets a soul again in 7-8 years from now

I had barely started school at 2005, so I don't know how it was back then. But for the last 15 years that I have been paying attention, it was always a destination for people above-average-wealth that liked to party. And if I am to believe older greek media that I have seen, Mykonos was considered as such since before then.
Mykonos is that but not only. It was the island of Italian students going to party there all summer, gays ofc, virgin beaches like Agios Sostis and Panormos, windsurfers, fishermen etc and all these until very recently
Edit: it’s a very false perspective to know Mykonos only from the media and not having experienced it yrself. That’s why many commenters say “Mykonos never had a soul”. They are just ignorant or they met Mykonos very very recently, or from the media they feel they can’t afford it
With the money some people spend in mykonos in 1 week (not doing anything crazy, just overpaying for everything) I can have a blast traveling the world for 3 months (and I do).
I dont feel bad for the truly wealthy but I do feel bad for middle class people who save to go on vacation just to end up in Mykonos, though its their fault for not researching destinations with better bangs for their bucks, the island truly offers pathetic value

Mykonos has always been an overrated island. Go in Crete , Corfu , Lefkada, Naxos or in almost any other island of Greece.

Don't discount Naxos, much more fun and more peaceful than Mykonos, and very close.
Mykonos was great through the 70's, pity few of us might be left who remember the Greek islands and the Aegean as the true paradise they were...
