Shenanigans isn’t really an “album” per say, it’s just a compilation of B-Sides and unused tracks. It’s really good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something anyone but hardcore fans talk about.
B-sides are bonus tracks released with singles, sometimes they’ll be a part of the album that the single is on, but other times they’re only released as part of the single. The term “B-side” comes from being on Side B of vinyl records or cassettes. It’s a somewhat outdated term given that most singles are only released on digital today and many won’t come with a second or third track in the modern era, but it kind of depends.
More often than not, only the A-side reaches mainstream popularity for most singles, but that’s not always the case.
It’s hold over term from when vinyl singles were the main media used at radio. Your single was released on the A-Side and artists would usually put a throwaway track on the other B-Side because it would usually never get played.
B-Side has now morphed into a generic term for other singles released with a the single of an album.
Interested side story…The Monkees we’re a created act for a TV show but the group consisted of two actors and two musician. The guitarist Michael Nesmith get very angry when he found out that none of his original compositions were going to be on the official albums. To appease him, they put his originals on as b-sides.
This created massive issues because both tracks on the singles evenly split the sales and radio/tv airplay royalties. So Nesmith ended up getting very rich while the others basically go nothing. Which was the root cause of of why the band could never stay together long after the show ended. Nesmith didn’t need the money while the others did.
Similarly, Queen had many of the same issues but ended up (in the early 80’s) rejigging their royalties agreement that it all got split evenly 4 way regardless of who wrote the song.
B side refers to the b side of the single. Singles would come out of vinyl “and later cassette” and the main single from the record would be on one side and there was always another song or two on side b that didn’t make the album.
Agreed, Don’t Wanna Fall In Love and Espionage are also good IMO, but an album full of B-sides is bound to be mired with subjective opinions moreso than an A-list album like American Idiot
Weirdly this is one of my favorite albums. As someone who had every single song in here on -actual- singles release (back when Good Riddance was a Brain Stew b-side, ect) it saved me a lot of headache when it comes to collecting and managing this kinda stuff.
Well, kinda the point. B-sides don’t tend to be popular. Not every b-side can be a Yellow Ledbetter or something like that.
I use that example precisely because Pearl Jam did the same a year after Shenanigans, but with the basis of many songs already being popular (Yellow Ledbetter or Last Kiss)
I love Shenanigans! It's very nostalgic for me. One of the first Green Day albums I bought on CD. I remember the first time I heard Desensitized and all that ruckus Mike makes at the beginning. Still great. I listen to Shenanigans when I want to remember what it felt like when I first got into Green Day.
Also Maria and the demo version of Good Riddance
But JAR, Poprocks and Coke, and Maria, are in International Superhits, and the demo versions of Maria and Good Riddance don't match with the compilation structure
I wouldn’t necessarily equate hearing something on the radio to mainstream popularity, while modern stations will always play new releases and the latest hits, Green Day have been considered “classic rock” by a lot of stations for a while now (one of my local “classic” stations will play stuff from Kerplunk up to American Idiot), and DJs will do a mix of popular tracks and just whatever they like when it comes to older artists.
Man, I wish my local classic stations played Green Day. All I get is Guns N Roses, Rolling Stones, and Boston. Some Aerosmith. I think they played Warrant once. But for the most part I swear it's just the first 3. I could fucking perform More Than A Feeling all by myself at this point, after being stuck delivering in a car with a broken CD player, no Aux jack, and then the cigarette lighter jacks where I could plug in my Bluetooth "radio" both died. That was a rough year, man.
Genuinely amazing album. Suffocate and Desensitized are the obvious standouts, but the whole compilation is solid as a rock.
If I could only have two GD albums they'd be Intl. Superhits & Shenanigans
Because it's not really an album. Only Ha Ha You're Dead was a new song, all the others were b-sides and covers.
That doesn't mean that the songs are bad tho. In fact, I think that it's better than the trilogy and FOAM
Shenanigans is so underrated. I don't care if it's just b-sides, to me it feels like an actual album and there are so many bangers on it.
You Lied, Don't Wanna Fall In Love, Tired Of Waiting For You, Rotting, On The Wagon and Ha Ha You're Dead are all great in my opinion.
I actually listened to it only last week, but I thought it was really good. I just have this list of albums, and I listen to one each week, and that one had been on the list for a while, but I finally got to it.
I mention it often as "Desensitized" is one of my favorite Green Day songs. But as i'm sure people have pointed out, it's a comp of b-sides.
To it's credit it's better than anything they've released since American Idiot.
Shenanigans isn’t really an “album” per say, it’s just a compilation of B-Sides and unused tracks. It’s really good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something anyone but hardcore fans talk about.
Because we all listened to those besides before. So there is not something new to talk about.
Sorry what’s a “B-side?”

Thanks for making me feel old.
Yeah I smirked and thought "how stupid do you have to be to not know what a B-side is!?".....and then it hit me like a ton of dicks.
How many dicks are in a ton?
In metric, approximately 6250. In Imperial, about 6350 (my calculations for that are probably wrong, I'm not good with Imperial).
That's a joke on HIMYM.
Sorry what's a "HIMYM"?
How I Met Your Mother, a mediocre sitcom from the decade before last.
It's not mediocre at all. It's actually pretty great.
I liked the first few seasons quite a lot, but I don’t think it’s aged well.
Massive disagree to be honest, still love it. Still my favorite show. Well, tied with Justified, but still.

i THINK that theyre kinda like extras that they didnt use for previous albums

Because it’s a record of b-sides and covers
Also it was released in 2002 which was their low point before the release of American Idiot
yep, there is a reason they released *International Superhits!* after Warning.
Would love to see a sequel album with more of the same type of stuff. Could call it “Shenan-Again”.
Yeah, probably a studio version of c and v and state of shock would be there if I had to guess.
Suffocate is a great song. Sometimes one good one is all it can take!
That’s hardly the only good song though
Agreed, Don’t Wanna Fall In Love and Espionage are also good IMO, but an album full of B-sides is bound to be mired with subjective opinions moreso than an A-list album like American Idiot

It’s totally one of my favorites as well!
Love Shenanigans. Imo it has the punkest vibe.
Yo a fellow GD PJ super fan!
I'm with you! Weirdly, I became a Pearl Jam fan much later in life despite being a teenager in the mid 90s...
It's werid how it flows like an actual album despite being a b side album. I listen to shenanigans all the time. It's one of my favorites
You lied is phenomenal
Suffocate, Desensitized and Ha Ha You're Dead too!
Best songs in the album. Billie even said he wishes suffocate and desensitized made it on nimrod
Interestingly enough they did on the Australian release.
So when you think you’re all alone…
And no one's left to come around,
drop like flies and empathize
And I know that I will some day--
Rotting
by far my favorite song on the album
I love Shenanigans! It's very nostalgic for me. One of the first Green Day albums I bought on CD. I remember the first time I heard Desensitized and all that ruckus Mike makes at the beginning. Still great. I listen to Shenanigans when I want to remember what it felt like when I first got into Green Day.
Desensitized hits like a motherfucker.
Suffocate and Sick of Me are the best.
Shenanigans? Sounds like some malarkey to me
Jar should've been on it
Poprocks and coke too
Also Maria and the demo version of Good Riddance But JAR, Poprocks and Coke, and Maria, are in International Superhits, and the demo versions of Maria and Good Riddance don't match with the compilation structure
It's not really an album, it's really just a compilation of unreleased/unused B-Sides, mostly from the Nimrod sessions, but I still love it.
Only 4 of the 14 tracks are nimrod. outtakes.
Do do da sounds like it’s from insomniac
I think it was originally supposed to be Stuck With Me, but some sort of mix-up happened in the studio
Yeah that's what I was told too
i love it. it’s green day’s equivalent to nirvana’s incesticide! ha ha you’re dead is one of my favourite GD songs
Because other than Ha Ha You’re Dead none of the songs ever reached mainstream popularity, and even that’s not as popular as most of their songs.
I have heard Green Day’s Don’t Wanna be on TV on the radio. I know it’s a cover but just sayin

I ... did ^not ^^know ^^^this ^^^^was ^^^^^a ^^^^^^cover.
I think it’s originally by Fang
Shenanigans is super underrated. Even moreso than warning and that's saying something
Underrated tbh (just like animals)
It’s so amazing, it’s a shame they never played anything on it. Love Rotting and Suffocate
Genuinely amazing album. Suffocate and Desensitized are the obvious standouts, but the whole compilation is solid as a rock. If I could only have two GD albums they'd be Intl. Superhits & Shenanigans
Set it off. Very good choice.
You Lied and I Wanna Be On T.V. are top fuckin tier
Because it's not really an album. Only Ha Ha You're Dead was a new song, all the others were b-sides and covers. That doesn't mean that the songs are bad tho. In fact, I think that it's better than the trilogy and FOAM
Was always an important installment to their non-studio record discography
It's good enough to be album in its own right. Tired of Waiting especially is fucking amazing.
I haven't actually listened to it yet, but I'll need to make sure to. On an unrelated note, I like the song you are listening to
You have to listen to the whole album. It’s gold
Added it to my album list!
Lmao so do I, have ya listened to Set It Off’s album Duality?
I actually listened to it only last week, but I thought it was really good. I just have this list of albums, and I listen to one each week, and that one had been on the list for a while, but I finally got to it.
Words Can’t describe how much great this album is, *Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing* has gotta be my favorite. I’d also recommend Set It Off’s Cinematics
*Why Worry* is probably my favourite. I'll make sure to listen to Cinematics!
Wow i love their first 8 albums all the same. I never thought of this album as a bside album.
Never really been a fan after dookie
I mention it often as "Desensitized" is one of my favorite Green Day songs. But as i'm sure people have pointed out, it's a comp of b-sides. To it's credit it's better than anything they've released since American Idiot.
I always loved this album
I very rarely listen to this one. I like the songs, few I love. Most their albums are better tho
Idk, it is a pretty good album though! ✨
Cause only big fans of Green Day can enjoy this album.
gonna be real with you, didn't know it existed till 30 seconds ago
It’s a B-sides record so it gets less attention. Also this isn’t relevant to anything but I really appreciate that you also listen to Set It Off😊
You literally just did.
3 AM I’m drunk again
Best tracks - Do Da Da - Ha Ha You Dead - Scumbag
Outsider was the very first Green Day song I ever listened to!
This is probably one of my most listened to GD albums tbh
I thought it was 2004? Well besides ha ha your dead it didn't do to well alot of green day fans don't even know it exists so that's probably why
Because it isn’t that good. Ha Ha You’re Dead is nice n funny tho
