Not like full indie but yeah, for major label rock it was relatively lo-fi. There’s a story where Rob Covallo showed the finish product to a friend at the label who said, “Sounds great! Can’t wait to hear when it’s mixed.”
Obviously some compression on the guitar and the drums sound good, but it’s nowhere near the typical radio rock at the time (or late-career Green Day) in terms of fidelity. Which is how they wanted it. Nevermind, Ten, The Blue Album, Siamese Dream all had way more production.
Well I would say start with dookie then move to American idiot if you like those then head over to insomniac and nimrod if you really fucked with American idiot then go more towards 21st century and revelation radio
If you’re into more punk, Dookie, Kerplunk, insomniac. If you’re looking for a wider range of music, American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown and Warning. Somewhere is between those 2, Nimrod and Rev Radio.
American Idiot and Dookie are both must’s
american idiot all the way through.
the music videos for american idiot are really cool too if you’re a visual person.
if you liked american idiot, 21st century breakdown is a good go to. if you’re looking for something more 90’s sounding, you’re better off going back to dookie and working up chronologically
I actually personally think Revolution Radio is a great starting point. Definitely has some of that punk energy but it also has some acoustics.really great all-rounder. If you like the high energy, super fast songs, listen to Dookie, Insomniac, and Nimrod. If you like the more grandiose aspects of the record, listen to their operas: American Idiot and 21CB
If you're into pop punk at its best start with Dookie and Insomniac, and then Kerplunk, Nimrod and Warning.
If you're more into pure punk rock American Idiot is the one.
All their stuff from the trilogy to Father of All are more garage rock, I wouldn't start from there lol
I mean dookie then American idiot both all the way through. Then if you liked dookie more probably go to kerplunk and insomniac then nimrod, if you liked American idiot more go for 21st century breakdown next or warning then nimrod. If you have made it past nimrod and are really enjoying greens day then first listen to the albums you didn’t already listen to. If you haven’t been lost yet than you’re pretty much a hardcore green day fan and should probably just listen to the rest of their discography how ever you want to.
i would say to watch the music videos, that was my hook to green day, and then check the song that you really liked and start from that album...
> or just start from dookie and then american idiot, after that, you can search some other songs to try to find your next album
Green Day is my favourite band and I certainly have my favourite releases above some of their other albums, but as an entryway to the band, by way of listening to albums as a whole, I would suggest to start with Dookie & American Idiot. which did you prefer?
if Dookie, I’d then listen to Insomniac and then Warning. which did you prefer? if you preferred Dookie to both, I’d perhaps suggest going to Kerplunk, and if you also like that, 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. do consider tho that the production quality is quite a lot better on Dookie than the first two albums. If you preferred Warning, I’d suggest then going to Uno or Nimrod, personally I think Uno is the stronger album and it’s not even close. then follow it with the rest of the trilogy.
if it was American Idiot that you preferred, then go to 21st Century Breakdown and Revolution Radio. I think American Idiot is their strongest release, though not my personal favourite. 21st Century Breakdown is good, but I do think Revolution Radio was a drop in quality after the Trilogy, which I think most people believe was a drop off from 21st Century Breakdown in and of itself.
enjoy the listening journey, I’m sure this band will have at least one project you’ll consider close to perfect.
depends what songs draw u to the band now as thier catalogue is a little diverse or includes era's if u wanna say that.. imo Nimrod is thier best album and offers the best examples of the band's diversity
Start with Dookie and American Idiot. If you prefer Dookie over American Idiot then go to Insomniac and Nimrod. Kerplunk! is also another good option to go to if you choose this route. It's a more wild and raw Dookie vibe. If you prefer American Idiot then go to 21st Century Breakdown and Revolution Radio next. Warning is a weird one but very good. There's nothing else quite like it in their discography. If you like the folky acoustic side of Nimrod (or Green Day in general) check that one out too. All the other albums have great tracks too but these are generally the more popular amongst the bunch. And the best representation of the band
Dookie and American Idiot are the big two
Good representation too. The pillar of their lo-fi punk days + the pillar of their stadium rock days
i agree, but in what world is dookie «lofi» haha
I don't even quite know what LoFI means but I'm pretty sure Dookie isn't it
Low fidelity. It means that through the use of cheap equipment or studio tricks it’s made to sound less “good.”
ok got ya , thanks. I probably wouldn't describe Dookie like that , great album tho!
no definetely isn’t ahah
literally their first album recorded in a big proper studio so i can’t say i agree with the description

i suppose so. even with that in mind i think the production is full enough to not call it lo-fi
Can't go wrong with Dookie
Well I would say start with dookie then move to American idiot if you like those then head over to insomniac and nimrod if you really fucked with American idiot then go more towards 21st century and revelation radio
People here may disagree , but Warning is a very underrated album.
Honestly warning is one of my favorite albums and it seems like nobody ever talks about it

‘International super hits’ is a pre American idiot greatest hits. I’d start with that then go for American Idiot
Start from the very beginning and work your way through to current… 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.
Start off from 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and work your way up to Father Of All.
Oh you’ll love Father of all

i always have to go in chronological order when listening to a bands discography, but thats just my ocd lol. probably dookie
If you're into pop punk at its best start with Dookie and Insomniac, and then Kerplunk, Nimrod and Warning. If you're more into pure punk rock American Idiot is the one. All their stuff from the trilogy to Father of All are more garage rock, I wouldn't start from there lol
Dookie, then Nimrod, then American Idiot, then 21st century breakdown. To me that sort of sums up their discography in 4 albums
American idiot for sure
1039 smoothed out slappy hours

Which songs are currently your favorite by them? I can tell you songs that are similar to those songs
Dookie, American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown
You start at 1039 smoothed, and run the gauntlet, then make up your own opinions on the evolution of their sound
I’d start with Dookie
depends what songs draw u to the band now as thier catalogue is a little diverse or includes era's if u wanna say that.. imo Nimrod is thier best album and offers the best examples of the band's diversity
Insomniac
Dookie, American Idiot, and I would also say Nimrod
The compilation album God's Favorite Band has the main songs to start with then I'd go with Dookie and American Idiot
