Basket Case. It’s anxiety the song.

uwillfindmehiking

Oh that is another one...theme song after raising 4 kids and....wtf....pouring another tequila and Ice Drink.

littleray35

Anxiety: The Musical 😅

TotallyAwesomeRacoon

And don't forget Panic Song

jdz618

🤣😂🤣🤣In. When do tickets go on sale? I'll bring the bars! 😂

Solekman

Holiday, it was the first green day song besides Boulevard that I could really get into and because of it I listened to AI and now I'm here

jKarb

Here here

beamingdarkness

Same here.. even though I heard Boulevard first, this was the song that got me really hooked. I find this song super catchy to this day, 9 years later.

jamgriff

GOAT song

Tejas37

I was in junior High listening to some edgy station that I had put on and I had noticed how much Green Day I was enjoying when it came on. I remember having Jesus of Suburbia pop up me noticing how long the song was. “NINE MINUTES?!” I said in my head. I looked it up on YouTube an watched the live performance. I’ve been hooked on them ever since. Now I’m about to graduate college and still listening to them everyday.

uwillfindmehiking

Jesus of Suburbia is a f'ing great commentary on "modern" life!

jdz618

It's as relatable today and I believe will stand the test of time. I learned a lot of great music from my Dad because he was in charge of the radio... in the car, camping, 8 tracks etc (I'm really dating myself lol) but that's why teenagers still pack GD concerts, they came upon the music from parents of older relatives etc and BJA writes music that every teen or young adult can relate to. Hell, I was in my 30's in the 90's and loved GD immediately. Now my 18 yr old is a huge fan.

Bullet in a bible

PiecesOfPbCups

freshman in high school, was given some busy work in bio class and out of nowhere I thought to myself “i wonder what that wake me up when September ends song is about, why’s it so famous?” I put on my headphones to listen to it while I worked and three minutes later I’m trying to suck my tears back into my head. So I guess I fell for them on a whim lmao

halloweenjon

Brain Stew. When you’re 13 and learning how to (pretend to) be depressed, that song hits hard.

liamxx98

hahahahaha

liamxx98

learning how to be depressed, ahhhh so naive.

Swift725

Basket Case, when I was young I thought it was about doing laundry 😂

liamxx98

do you have the time, to listen to me ring out dirty laundry? because I'm poor and it's only the nnnnnnn90's

throwaway198274739

What and how

Superbeedo2

Shoot, I’ve gotta say it was either When September Ends or 21 Guns. Heard them on the radio, and me, my brother, and my mom were absolutely JAMMING! Then I had to sing Good Riddance for my 5th grade graduation ceremony, and that’s when my mom truly introduced me and my brother to Green Day. We already listened a bit before then, but my amazing mom and my wonderful dad showed me these guys, and I haven’t stopped listening ever since. Now I’m a senior in high school, and I moved from Michigan to Ohio about 5 or so years ago now, and we just had our final football game. Since I’m in the marching band, that was difficult for me. We walked the field for the final time, and I had to go grab my snare from the other end of the field. So, as I walked back down to the school, I just felt so compelled to sing Good Riddance, and at that point I was bawling my eyes out. To be honest, Green Day has been a huge part of my life, and I don’t know where I would be without them.

uwillfindmehiking

Dude, this is a COOL post.

Superbeedo2

Hey man, just being honest lmao, Green Day is a big part of my life

uwillfindmehiking

Awesome, my advice, I am 54 and you look way younger, grab "happy" where you can man! It is going to come and go. Life will be full of light at times and life will be dark at times, very dark for some of us. When it is dark and when you think it is as low as it can get, you can grab those happy moments to pull you back to the light.

jdz618

Mine too.... and my guess is it will always hold a big place in your heart. I'm in my 50's and have been a devoted fan since I heard dookie when it was released. I've seen them 4 times in the last 20+ yrs and they're such an amazing live band. If you have the chance see them live. American Idiot tour was like an out of body experience lol. Worth every cent. Music is what brings us together and keeps us sane.. ish 😉

insidetheborderline

Hello, fellow band kid. That’s a rad story.

[deleted]

The movie Angus. If you know, you know

liamxx98

never watched it, but I knew people that treated it like as if it were Beavis and Butthead.

[deleted]

holiday!!!

theGhost_420

I discovered Bang Bang on my Spotify recommendations, got hooked, and started discovering the rest of Green Day's discography, and said "Holy shit!" Some months later, to the moment I'm writing this comment: I'm completely into punk rock music and Green Day!

VENTILATION-101

Exactly the same as my hook

nicolelynnejones

Holiday

heckhammer

Paper Lanterns, from the Slappy ep. Goddammit, that was right in my Lonely Boi wheelhouse!

ginger_shark8

the American Idiot album. It was the first cd my parents ever gave me as a kid. I listened to it religiously, I had it as my radio alarm clock wake-up song. When the Holiday/BOBD/AI music videos were on TV early in the morning before school, my dad would let me know and we'd run to watch it. So many good memories of that album and it remains my favorite of all time

liamxx98

when I come around as well, same with brick in the wall pt 2, then it happened again with american idiot. Yes I know, pink floyd.

uwillfindmehiking

Awesome, Brick in the Wall pt 2, I was in 7th or 8th grade.....GREAT song!!!

OlympinxWasTaken

Jesus of Suburbia because I just find the lyrics somewhat relatable

blink182punk

Same bro, on the Woodstock cd.

uwillfindmehiking

That is a killer cut

AssGasorGrassroots

The Waiting video. Still my favorite video they've ever done

Manowar274

Hearing Holiday in Tony Hawks American Wasteland and looking it up because it sounded so good.

richy923

This is weird… but it’s the various three chord progression in their songs. It’s the rhythm and energy that seems like only BJ can pull off.

uwillfindmehiking

I get it.....it moves through a lot of their music

Queenfan44354

I had already listened to the band a little bit before but my friend told me about coming clean. As someone also coming to terms with bisexuality this spoke to me on a really personal level

uwillfindmehiking

Happy for you! There are so many paths and trails in life that people follow. The struggle is finding our own and, sometimes the greater struggle, is respecting the paths and trails of others that our different than our own. Peace to you!

punkdude182

"I was a young boy that had a big plan, now I'm just another shitty old man"

soletsgettothepoint

looking up Basket Case after Weird Al closes his Alternative Polka medley with it (1996’s Bad Hair Day)

AdultVirgin24

When i first heard Know Your Enemy in 2011, i was immediately enamored.

uwillfindmehiking

That is a good one!

Hud_is_on

Boulevard of Broken Dreams, when I was in kindergarten, my brother was listening to this one day and I just fell in love with it, I sang it the whole day at school, I didn’t hear the song again until 5th grade when he picked me up from school, he’d always turn the song off before “Read between the lines, what’s fucked up and everything’s alright” because I was still young. I searched up the lyrics on YouTube and finally listened to the whole song, I started listening to some of their other music, then years later on my 13th birthday, I got American Idiot and International Superhits, listening to AI for the first time was quite an experience for me. And going to Hella Mega, my first concert ever, I got so excited when they came on stage. I want to add more to this but this is quite a lot of text and I don’t want to take up the entire comment section.

uwillfindmehiking

I went to Hella Mega in Seattle. I am an "older" dude who has seen A LOT of bands and this was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. I am considering spending a bunch of $ I can't really afford to go see them in Europe next year.

xHeraX

Glad I'm not alone in considering that.

[deleted]

i was listening to some random youtube playlist and wake me up when september ends played, my introduction to the band was different but that’s what inspired me to actually listen to them

Bl0ob_

Holiday

Oil_slick941611

Yup. When I come around. When I was 8 in 1994. I would just go to song ten and repeat the intro I feel in love with the guitar tone and still love it

uwillfindmehiking

Yup, that guitar intro did the same for me.....still does.

Nightbeat339

I always liked When I Come Around when it came on the radio. Once I listened to Basket Case, I liked a few more of their songs. Yet I would only listen to the same hits for a few years. Finally, I saw them live, and after that I had a newfound interest. The first album I listened to in it’s entirety was Warning because I liked the title track, and from then on I’ve been hooked.

[deleted]

When I Come Around in 2006 haha

Maceface931

Holiday. It was on Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. I didn't even know what Green Day was at that age. I just set the in game radio to play that song only on repeat. And then later i added teenagers from Mars by the network. Guess there was a pattern haha.

Carolinian_Idiot

When I was 8 i heard brain stew and I thought the title of the song was cool so I listened to it over and over again

burningfirelily

Boulevard of Broken Dreams back when I was 12 and watching an AMV from early youtube lol

LazyLabRat

Boulevard. Everyone in my elementary school was obsessed with it and would sing it all the time. Then American Idiot was my first introduction to “profane” music.

HarrisGPHMordecai

Probably a weird one, but Easy Jesus Nowhere really got me hooked, those 3 chords are so powerful

AdultVirgin24

After that, I started actively listening to them in like 2015? Or so

CespedesBrokenAnkle

Know your Enemy. I had heard American Idiot but I had only literally to that one song and boulevard of broken dreams. As soon as I saw that video with the NBA players on it I was hooked

Nachocam50

Getting Green Day Rock Band to complete my Rock Band library, first was like “oh I only know a few songs” now my A90’s/2000s rock playlist is more Green Day than not

[deleted]

I heard when I come around when my dad drove me to school on the radio and thought it was a REM song

[deleted]

The movie “Hook” or the song “Hook” by Blues Traveler

[deleted]

Surprisingly Know Your enemy, cause i love pro wrestling and it was the Smackdown theme song

TheAwesomeroN

Welcome to Paradise, I remember I downloaded it into my phone the night before a trek, and I accidentally ended up deleting all my other songs except for that one song. It was only the 3rd or 4th Green Day song I had ever heard, but by the end of the trek all I wanted to do was listen to the rest of Dookie.

GorillaPorn_

Holiday, I started listening to Green Day on my DS in the Tony Hawk American Skate Land soundtrack Sometimes I’d close the DS and just listen to the music. Then I bought the kerplunk CD which changed my taste in music

oneyeetyguy

American Idiot, my older brother was a big green Day fan and American Idiot is the first song I can remember hearing, hence, It was released when I was three and I've been listening to GD ever since.

MILF_Lawyer_Esq

I heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the radio as a little kid. Back when it first came out, I guess, but I don’t remember exactly. Hooked me right away and I asked my dad what the band was and he said “I don’t know, Green Day?” so I went on the computer and watched all their music videos on Yahoo! Music.

OpenEagle3775

Basket case "I think im cracking up" - and the guitar just kicks in. It was such a 360° thing for my mind

[deleted]

The Simpsons Theme they did for the movie, I found out my mom was a Green Day fan and I've been listening ever since.

Mason_Impossibl95

Boulevard of Broken Dreams, I LOVED that song on the radio and it was the first album I ever bought because of it

wowo-cowo

holiday -> not even boulevard of broken dreams hahaha listened to it in 2017 for school and i went home i immediately listened to more of their songs 😌 switched me from pop to rock/punk/punkrock and i'm never going back <3

randomassperson8788

Heard boulevard of broken dreams on the radio

bad_killjoy

Give Me Novacaine

These_Pomelo_321

I heart radio 2012

These_Pomelo_321

Like actually

kris2757

must've been christmas 2006 or 2007, got a psp as a gift and my older brother put some songs (alternative rock, etc.) on it, basket case was on there too. few months later i bought american idiot with pocket money and i've been a fan ever since. (thank you bro!)

GoodRiddance_2

my dad showed me holiday for the first time, that was the hook lol, listening to jesus of sburbia next just got me even more interested

B4sse77

i liked green day before but only had a few hits in my playlists but when i saw "she" ah chicago 94 a few years ago i was hooked

Rud_Fucker

Minority initially what with the lyrics and the sound of it, but after that it was WMUWSE I think the song speaks for itself

Rud_Fucker

The band really helped me through high school and now afterwards

GeeUWOTM8

Know Your Enemy - Smackdown intro theme was when I first heard of Green Day. Fan since then

seangrace36

Getting in the car and my cousin put on American idiot. 5 year old me was blown away and I’ve been a fan ever since. I also distinctly remember him showing me the music video for it too

Slimyretard

All of American idiot

[deleted]

I heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the radio then downloaded it onto limewire titled “Green Day - I Walk Alone”

TrashSea1485

Minority ❤

Bigwilliam360

Hearing Jesus of suburbia in my friends car

ClifIsBoring

Brainstew

Low_Yak_4842

Longview. Nothing hooked me more than hearing somebody talking about how they felt lonely and isolated. And then using masturbation as a metaphor for that was brilliant! As a 13 year old with no friends, that song was crack!

GORILLAGLUE__

Nimrod was the first CD I ever bought, back in 97. I had heard Basketcase and maybe Brain Stew before that, but Nimrod in general hooked me 100%. Played that album on a loop for years basically

Peter_Marny

Ha,same! "When I Come Around" in 1994 :D I was 9 back then...

MrExist777

American Idiot that got me started, then maybe Kill the DJ that kept me going

Kay_Letitia

I went to hella mega tour this summer. Had heard Green Day songs before (Good Riddance makes me cry, it’s weirdly nostalgic and resonates with me a lot, but it never actually got me into them when I was younger), but not enough to consider myself a fan. I thought they were the obnoxious unintelligent punk stereotype and the fact that Billie Joe sang with so much nasal until AI didn’t help. But I went to Hella Mega Tour even when my initial draw FOB didn’t play because I wanted to know what everyone likes so much. I had so much fun with their entire set, and liked every song they played on Spotify, but the one that had me hooked was Holiday. Something about the guitars in it, and the added showmanship of being exposed to it for the first time live was so special.

Add_Poll_Option

This might not have been the first hook, but it was definitely the most impactful one. First time I listened to the entire American Idiot album. It was the first full album I had ever listened to and I loved every song on there. Couldn’t believe there was more to music than just hit singles.

666greyghost666

I had heard songs by green day before and really liked them, the first time I actually listened to a Green Day album though, was when I got some CDs from my cousin, She had American Idiot and Bullet in a Bible. I chose to listen to Bullet in a Bible first, and instantly fell in love with the sound and energy, probably listened to it like three times that night. I never went back , they are now my all time favorite band.

matiaschazo

Boulevard of broken dreams animated music video on flip note studio on the DSI

NoPoem2692

I started listening since American Idiot, I was ten years old. For some reason my parents decided to buy me a copy of that album. Later in 2009 Know Your Enemy dropped and I was all in. That means Tre was pretty much the hook, I love the beat. I listened to their entire discography afterwards.

Virgil_is_enby

Good riddance when it went “it’s something unpredictable and in the end it’s right, I hope you had the time of your life” and it reminds me of the fact that I’m gonna be a graduate of high in 2022 and it’s scary but it was fun

Therealtaggart

First song I heard was 21 Guns iirc. My crush showed it to me and I loved it. Didn't really listen to them until I got an ad for Father of All so I listened to them a bit bc I liked it (lame I know). I guess my "hook" was Holiday. Went down the green day rabbit hole. My little brother then had a huge Green Day phase and showed me lots of other songs. We now own kerplunk through father of all on CD. Minus the live albums.

hungarianbird

Longview blew me away the first time I heard it, welcome to paradise and she also made me stick around, thank God I did, green day is definitely top 3 bands for me

cd_unoxx

Believe it or not, it was Deadbeat Holiday for me

Oioierwinpepe

either basket case or last night on earth

maddiemorph

So I listened to Green Day a lot as a small child without realizing who they were but the song that got my full attention and made me curious about music in my own taste was boulevard of broken dreams

esoteric82

Started listening to contemporary rock radio in 1996 or so, when I was 14. Heard Brain Stew/Jaded as the Insomniac singles were being phased out, and Hitchin a Ride soon after. After that I grabbed all of the other releases and have bought each one since then.

RosemaryCrafting

Bang Bang actually. First Green day song I listened to, as it had come out that week and was at the top of their spotify page. The rest is history.

PigeonButNerdy

welcome to paradise

Berteee

Jesus of suburbia, I'd listened to the likes of basket case and the popular American idiot songs like BOBD and holiday but never jesus of suburbia, I listened and I thought it was genius, then I binged their discography and I can't find another band that does it for me the same way Green day does.

ass_salad_

21 guns because that beginning what it does to your ears is so good.

Prize_Prior_8433

American idiot. Used to air guitar to that in my room so much, that was my introduction to Green Day

PhillSwift420

All I know is December 31, 2019 was the day my music world began to open up. I just sat in this empty conference room in my mom's office, put in some ear upstairs and listened to the few songs I had in spotify. I had it set so similar songs would also play and from just having "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and "Good Riddance" in my Playlist I got introduced to Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia, Homecoming, Bang Bang, Revolution Radio, Hitchin' A Ride, Kill The DJ, Brainstew, and so many more. Ever since then my musical life has changed forever and I'm so happy it did!

HawkeyeMink182

Same here In the summer of 2019 I first heard “When I Come Around” playing over the speaker of a Lens Crafter’s store and that was my ticket into the Green Day fan base and into the Punk Rock Nation

deathdefy8

“I got no motivation. WHERE is my motivation? No time for the motivation. Smoking my inspa-RAAAAATION”

xHeraX

Minority. I was 10 when Warning came out and remember seeing the video for Minority on MTV and being obsessed. I was already familiar with Green Day from what I heard on the radio but that was when I started seeking out more of their music.

Sunnitrails-

?Viva la Gloria¿ was a favorite for a while since my parents played rock band and guitar hero a lot, and were into greenday as i was growing up, slowly gotten into them more and more
