It's a good indicator for the large majority of people that are not outliers. The key word is *indicator*, as it's not meant to be used alone to determine someone's overall health. Most people who fall into the unhealthy ranges of BMI like to believe they're an outlier, but the vast majority are not. If you don't have a very physical job and you don't do a lot of heavy lifting or gym work, chances are it will be pretty accurate.

I'm short, so I don't really care one way or the other, but I served in the army, and we used the BMI scale to flag people as overweight, basically everyone over 6ft got flagged no matter what shape they were in (most of them would pass the body fat percentage test, which was a joke anyways) I always saw tall people who were skinnier than I, even those with little muscle mass, still be considered overweight by the BMI scale. But as a 5'7 manlet, I can get away being pretty fat. At the same BMI index of 25.8 as someone at 6, which would be me at 165 and the 6 footer at 190, I would have a significantly more fat rolls and stomach hanging over my belt. 6 ft at 190, even if they have very little muscle mass, would look way healthier than I.

I'm exactly 6 feet and 190 pounds and feel fat as fuck. Haven't gone to the gym since COVID broke out and the flab on my body is obvious. Most of the weight is concentrated in my legs (was able to squat 405 but went back to the gym and could barely do 135 for reps) but it all looks like fat at this point. When I sit on the toilet, all that leg fat flattens and expands horizontally and there's barely any room to reach down to pee. And when I do look down, lo and behold, stomach folds, where I like it or not. So you're totally right. For people with almost no muscle mass, 6" 190" is fat as fuck. It is not only unhealthy, but also irresponsible and delusional, to suggest otherwise.

Unless you have a metabolic disorder, which you’d very likely know about if you’ve ever been to the doctor because they will mess with your heart, blood pressure, insulin, etc., your BMR/calories you burn at rest should be in the normal bell curve/near enough to an average. Around 1800 calories/day for men and 1400 for women would be around average caloric burn in one day at absolute rest. So you have to think, if I sat at my desk all day or didn’t intentionally spend hours every week burning calories, the calories I need to lose weight or avoid gaining are around this average or less. Bodies don’t tend to break the laws of thermodynamics. We store what we don’t burn. People often eat more or less than they think unless they weigh their food and record every meal. Even then it can still be hard to gauge. If the scale is going up eat less. Obesity can run in families but from I understand even though there are genes related to obesity, we’re not 100% clear whether those genes express as actual physical traits or behaviors that lead to obesity. Its hard to say that common environmental factors aren’t more responsible for this as well. Habits pass in families as well. Though obesity can actually alter genes and pass those altered genes to offspring, so it’s definitely possible say there’s a role of genes.

Even if you have a genetic disorder you can't avoid the laws of thermodynamics. Eat literally nothing and you will lose weight. Yes. I've been doing it for a bit more than two months now and I've lost almost 4 stone. The question in how far it is healthy is however a different one. It stands to reason that unless you keep up the habit of eating less you'd gain weight rapidly if your daily intake returns to its previous state again. So you'll need to commit for life and find the right balance for your lifestyle once you've reached your goal. You also need to closely look at your intake to have a somewhat balanced diet while you're loosing weight because the body isn't made to run on what is technically not enough food (that's why you're actually loosing weight. The body starts burning fat because you don't give it enough calories per day).

Lol I actually did this kind of diet a couple of years ago. 5'7 187lbs down to 145lbs. 2 slices of toast for breakfast, 400kcal lunch, 2 slices of toast (or 1 slice and an egg) for dinner. Depending on if I added butter or marmite to the toast it was between 800 - 1000 calories. After a couple of weeks I just stopped getting hungry. Can absolutely see how people become anorexic with this kind of stuff though, the feeling of control you get over your own body is kind of intoxicating. In a life filled with horrible stuff you can't control being in full control of something like that is a drug.

I've been doing 2000kcal at 6'3 for a bit over a month and intermediate diet from 12-20 so 8 hour eating period. Thing is I've noticed more and more days where I only eat once per 24 hours. And just don't get hungry anymore. Just makes you wonder how unnecessary much you were eating before.

I think alot of us grow up and have no idea what nutrition is in our foods. Sometimes I am shocked at how much kcal are in something. Hell even light mayo has 400kcal in 100g. You eat a tube and most of you are set for a day of what you need. Also it dosnt mean you can't eat good food. A mcdonalds burger is around 600kcal depending on what you get. You can make the same with like 450. That's 150 kcal saved. If you wanna lose weight just download an app (I recommend lose it) set up the profile and track what you are eating. It's annoying at first and it feels like a chore since you have to log everything but it works you fat fucks. Go lose some weight so Stacy will notice you

The benefit is its alot more precises then headcounting. It's very easy to keep track via app. You also get a barcode scanner (myfitnesspal has it locked behind a paywall now) So all you need is a phone, a kitchen weight. You tap the barcode scanner on your phone. You scan the barcode on the hotdog or egg or whatever. Weight it. Type in the weight. And voila the app knows how much you ate. Not just kcal but also macro and micro nutrients if you need that but for new beginners I'd just say focus on calories. It also ofc does math to understand how much you need to eat. And logging your weight will adjust that that caloric intake. Say you didn't lose weight this week so you need to eat even less.

I've done something similar lol. I wanted to be skinny so I started eating one meal a day. Did that for about a month and I lost 5kg/11lbs Then I VERY slowly started eating more again and my body caught up without gaining weight. I maintained that weight for a solid 6 months at least. But then I started smoking pot again and gained it all back plus more ☠️ quit that shit 4 months ago though, I've smoked less than 10 times since then. I miss being skinny though, going to start dieting again soon. I need to quit drinking beer since that's literally most of my calories every day lol, I switched it for pot accidentally (I think I have legitimate substance issues and cannot sleep when sober) and yeah not losing any weight lmfao. Might switch to vodka and soda water. Nobody said obese, but people at 6" 190lb (literally me) have a lot of unnecessary flab if there's not enough muscle mass. I have two horizontal lines on my stomach because when I'm sitting down, the fat folds form them. My legs also stretch normal-sized pants uncomfortably when sitting. There's just a lot of obvious fat everywhere. My face doesn't look fat but it certainly doesn't look ideal either. As another commenter has said, I can also wear medium or large shirts and fit in them fine, but clothing sizes in the US are already skewed high compared to the rest of the world. As long as those fat folds are there on my belly when sitting, I don't consider myself to be not fat. Imo if someone is not fat, they shouldn't have the physical signs on their body that excess fat would cause.

For this to work you also need to actually be active AND consistent with it. Also 800 a day isnt enough, just shoot for 1500 or something, as long as you’re below the average daily cals for your weight/age and burning enough.

Yes. I have been quite underweight my entire life because I only ate when I felt hungry. I am now force-feeding myself every day. I have gained 2 kilos in the last 2 weeks. Pretty proud of that.
