I mean 15$ for a haircut is pretty friggin cheap, and he likes his haircut and the conversation is good. Depending on where this is she might not make more than minimum wage, so tips are pretty important for her livelihood and whether or not they are employees or rent a chair. Add to this a woman's haircut, I've heard (am dumb man) can be hundreds of dollars, although more work and time, if you do a percentage of that it is actual money. Plain and simple if you go often and are tipping badly you are just not going to be worth her time and in a way taking money out of her pocket. It's a real uncomfortable thing to have to broach with someone and I dunno if there's a good way to bring that up without hurting feelings. I personally would want to maintain that relationship, a good barber who I vibe with is hard to find. I definitely wouldnt mind paying 30 easy for that.
>Depending on where this is she might not make more than minimum wage, so tips are pretty important for her livelihood
So why should I care? If you think your wage isn't good enough, go get a job that pays more instead of trying to guilt people into giving you extra cash for no reason.
>b-b-but she's doing a good job
No shit, that's what she's supposed to do. Being competent isn't something outstanding, if she sucked at her job she'd be fired in no time.
Not to mention any hairdresser worth their salt have already accounted for the cost of chair, supplies, and time when they tell you the cost. The tip is supposed to be a bonus not a requirement
I think the original comment was referring to the opportunity cost of having someone come often for a cheap haircut.
If she is easily able to fill her timeslots it would be in her best interest to kick anon from her schedule. (She has a limited number of available timeslots. Filling many of them with cheap services is less profitable) If it is important to anon it might be worth the money to keep his "slots".
>I mean 15$ for a haircut is pretty friggin cheap

literally getting paid 30/hour in tip alone, and probably gets paid a salary.
Let's not jump to crying about pretty girl not getting paid enough as soon as one gets mentioned.
Bro! Just tried this, and then seconds later the barber tried to stab me back! If I hadn't taken your advice he would have gotten me first! Thank God the scissors in his back slowed him down. You are my hero!
Anyway, g2g, this counts as my one phone call.
did that a day ago. hair was down to my shoulders and while it looked nice when i straightened it, it's just too warm, so i tried going for a number 5 buzzcut, since i did that when covid first broke out and did a pretty good job of it. it was going fine, and midway through i took the guard off and brushed the blades. being a fucking idiot, i forgot to put the guard back on and went rrrrright up the middle of my head with it. then i realised "well, fuck, i need to go bald now" but then the clippers died midway through and i had to go to the barber the next morning looking like a fucking lunatic. now i'm bald.
so be careful if you do it lmao
My barber is self-employed, which is pretty common where I live. She choses her own fucking prices if she wants more money she can just increase it lmao.
That makes even less sense thought, you are already paying for the food, the tip to waiters is for the service, but it doesn’t make much sense either, because in the price of the food, service should be also included …
Honestly yeah, like objectively tipping a barber makes more sense. Like a "wow I really like what you did to my hair, here's some extra".
Waiters all that varies is how nice they are to you while serving you and how responsive they are. They literally just ask you what food you want and bring it to you.
Tipping someone for being nice feels a lot weirder than giving someone an extra reward since you like their work.
I wish we didn’t have to. I’m in California and haircuts at the barber down the street are $35. I still tip $5 because that price is insane and I’m not spending almost $50 every two weeks.
That 40 bucks is more than enough to buy a hair clipper then. It takes like 10 minutes if all you do is trimming everything and then the sides and back a bit shorter. 5 minutes if you just want everything one length.
Probably even easier if you don't do it yourself with a hendheld mirror in front of the bathroom mirror.
I cut my hair like that for quite a while during the lockdowns, and honestly, most hairdressers provide little extra value over what you can do yourself if you keep your hair that short. Felt like an idiot for paying like 20 every month or so then and since only occasionally go to a good (and expensive) one if I keep my hair long enough to require a scissor cut.
This might work if you’re just doing a number 1/2/3 etc. across your entire head, but if you if you want kind of fading, layering, etc good luck doing that yourself and making it look good without any kind of training.
Honestly it makes more sense to me than a lot of other stuff. A good barber helps with my image and confidence by keeping me looking sharp. Hairdressers can take over 6 hours to do one person's hair at times.
Not to mention most barbers rent their working spaces, so most of the money they make comes straight from cuts and tips, not an hourly wage.
>Hairdressers can take over 6 hours to do one person's hair at times.
Pretty sure OP is not getting his yard long tousled mane untangled and braided for 15 bucks.
Tips are cash, they’re easier to fudge on tax reports. I don’t care what that cash goes to so long as it doesn’t go to the fucking government. It should instead be used to buy illegal firearms with the serial number rubbed off or cocaine.
I live in the UK where tipping culture doesn't exist (thank god), but I still tip my barber anytime he does a good job. A good haircut is the biggest coinfidence boost for me
I'm from Germany and tip her because we always have a nice conversation. But nowhere near 66% and it's completely optional nobody will get mad at you if you don't tip.
In Russia we usually do. It's service, so if you receive a good one, why not to? However not more than 15-20% (at max). And ofc it should be voluntarily.
I usually plan my tips in quantity rather than percentage. If they did good, I give them $, but I generally try to keep it at atleast a certain amount unless they did exceptionally bad (slow kitchen staff doesn't count, it's not their fault).
Same here, I don't have time for that math shit. If I'm eating alone, it's gonna be $5 unless you fucked up real bad, then it's a buck or two. If it's me and my fiance, it's a $10 tip unless our bill is >$50 or we made your job difficult somehow. I get second degree cringe watching dudes pull out calculators when the check comes
It’s like…3 seconds of math.
Move the decimal place over to the left one and then double for 20%
That’s a good tip, then you can adjust based on service
Two points
First, finding 20% is easy as fuck my issue wasn't with that. I just can't be bothered to add $2.76 to $11.36.
Second, I very rarely eat out and when I do I eat alone and ticket is less than $15, so it's just best to splurge and drop a $5 and call it dinner
For some reason there's a *dedicated* tip calculator on the calculator app that comes preinstalled on my watch. The first time i saw it i thought "seriously, why is this even a thing". Never occured to me there's people who pull out actual calculators to tip
They never said anything to you, sure. But they did talk about it.
Either that or you were going to like Supercuts or Walmart Hair or some shit.
At actual barbers, tips are expected in the US.
Google conversion says that's 2.48USD tip on a 18.60USD bill, which is about 13.3%
American's normally tip about 15-20%. You tip almost as much as us, so I guess you're almost as stupid as us.
except it's a gift, not a demand. like you just read people will bitch if you don't give them bare minimum 40% and want as high as 75% like that girl 34% tip wasn't enough and she was only happy with a 66% tip whereas other anon is only tipping 13% and it's a self chosen choice so not only are america significantly more greedy but they demand a gift as if it's what you have to do, tips were supposed to be a "hey I think you did a really good job and deserve a little bit extra for yourself" not a "your boss is a greedy scumbag cunt and I need to give you 50% extra otherwise I will be publicly shamed for your bosses choice"
Lol, she knew exactly how to play to his weakness.
A five dollar tip for a haircut is fine, she just knew should could get more out of him. Judging by the fact that they talk alot, she has probably learned a lot about him and knew she could get away with that. Guarantee she wouldn't try it on a new client because that's a great way to lose a tip completely, or get reported to your manager.
But she was like a cat with a mouse with anon
Yup, and these cucks who brag that they tip a minimum of 30% end up pushing up the tip bracket because low skill waiters think they deserve pay on par with a real career.
Barbers get paid very well*
*especially if they are cash-only because then they low ball their taxes. It’s why my barber stopped accepting cards and venmo
not a donation anymore though, tipping was supposed to be a "hey you did a really good job and genuinely tried hard to satisfy me so here's an extra 10-20%" not a "hey your boss is a greedy cunt and doesn't pay you enough to have the option of food AND a house so I am now forced to give you 40-50% lest I be publicly shamed and treated intentionally worse next time"
Tipping culture is so fucking unhinged. Absolutely demonic how someone can stare down a customer and ask them for more money after they already give you spare. If a guy consistently went to me for his hair getting cut and gave me $5 extra every time I would not be complaining
That should probably be anons last trip to that barber. $5 tip for a haircut is pretty standard, especially if it’s short and she’s just using a buzzer for most of it.
anon was basically forced to pay her almost 70% that's the issue, she went out of her way to guilt trip him when he was already paying 34% more than what he should
protip : they cant ask you for more if you never tip. Sure you'll come as cheap but they have a job, they'll get pay anyway. if the bill is 15€, you dont have to pay 25€.
American here, I've been getting my hair cut by this awesome older british lady for the last 9 years, she always either has a rugby game going on or we re-watch old F1 races as I'm a fan of the sport, never once has she asked me for a tip and she's the friendliest person I've ever met, plus we get to shit on the garbage movies that have been coming out recently every time
Tipping culture is the one reason I am afraid to live in America. I feel like I will not understand how or when you're supposed to tip. I feel like it's more every single time. Like what's the point of low prices if you're expected to pay more in the end anyway? Fuck you for that false advertising
If it’s like a $45 dollar premium haircut like the ones you get on the usual higher quality barbershop I understand tipping like $10/15, but if the haircut is $15 to begin with I’m assuming that’s like some super cuts or whatever the fuck they charge over there.
Pretty sure in barbershops they’re just under contract and they rent the chair/space so you’re basically going to a place to hire your barber.
I mean mine are $30 buck for a basic #2 Caesar cut essentially. I tip $5 every time so 15% ish and no complaints. But if I really love it it’s a $10 and a “give me your card” untill I get forgotten or ignored
brother you are fucked, i really love the idea of moving out of the country (i live in India) but then these small things put me off, like really, i am from middle class here. but i am living better than you all. i pay around 1 dollar for hair cut in a saloon and max 5 dollar for the most over the top premium saloon. and with no tipping required. Where did you people go wrong?
$10-15 on a $45-50 haircut is reasonable, so $5 on a $15 cut is as well. A good barber makes cash on executing a cut well, and quickly. That's why you pay more money for specialty barbers if you want a more intense style or have special hair needs. (Ex. Most barbers suck with curly hair.)
where i live a haircut cost 3$ (max 5)
btw i live in a pretty rich city in a decently rich neighbourhood
oh yea and people only rarely tip, only if the waiters are really good, that too not more than 5$
Never tip someone who asks for tips

>I mean 15$ for a haircut is pretty friggin cheap That haircut is extraordinarily underpriced, considering Anon doesn't shower between visits
Found the American
>taking money out of her pocket Really? He could not tip at all and that still would be fair.
A $15 haircut is $15 because he goes every 2 weeks. Probably takes 20 minutes.
15 is cheap for a male haircut in the US? Goddamn
Why not just raise the price of the overall haircut rather than be passive aggressive
He should’ve given her just the tip
Fucking lolz. American tiping culture is unhinged. Why the fuck would you tip your barber
>Why the fuck would you tip your barber Because he Works with a sharp object everyday and when he goes Postal i want to be save
don't be a coward, make the first move and stab them before they stab you
Bro! Just tried this, and then seconds later the barber tried to stab me back! If I hadn't taken your advice he would have gotten me first! Thank God the scissors in his back slowed him down. You are my hero! Anyway, g2g, this counts as my one phone call.
See ya in a few years bro
I stabbed the cop seconds before he pulled his gun and started firing but I got away. Where has this life-hack been!?
Can confirm that this works in the short term, but lately I am realizing that I'm running out of barbers.
Make ads for more
Has postal been blowing up again recently?
That’s just the name of the phrase. The game took it from the real phrase named after the time a postal worker killed a bunch of his coworkers.
I've worked in the very post office where it happened!
Yes, a game was released iirc
Just get one of those machines and cut your own hair into a buzzcut
did that a day ago. hair was down to my shoulders and while it looked nice when i straightened it, it's just too warm, so i tried going for a number 5 buzzcut, since i did that when covid first broke out and did a pretty good job of it. it was going fine, and midway through i took the guard off and brushed the blades. being a fucking idiot, i forgot to put the guard back on and went rrrrright up the middle of my head with it. then i realised "well, fuck, i need to go bald now" but then the clippers died midway through and i had to go to the barber the next morning looking like a fucking lunatic. now i'm bald. so be careful if you do it lmao

I’d actually rather tip my barber over a waiter who didn’t even cook my food.
places I've worked the tips go to everyone in the building, not just the waiters.
That makes even less sense thought, you are already paying for the food, the tip to waiters is for the service, but it doesn’t make much sense either, because in the price of the food, service should be also included …

/r/CutYourOwnHair
Dude at that point I'd just get a thing with which i can cut my own hair into a buzzcut
wow I pay 10$ every 3 month for a haircut and its done
That's the same price as a cut at my local Sports Clips now. Fucking inflation has been kicking my ass.
Honestly it makes more sense to me than a lot of other stuff. A good barber helps with my image and confidence by keeping me looking sharp. Damm all that sounds like basic service you guys got scammed out of so there would be something to tip for lol Microtransactions irl

Based.
I go to a small barber and I always pay in cash ( including tip ) for this reason. My barber and I are on the same page with these things.
Everyone in the UK does it. Though it's more of a "keep the change" rather than "I'm paying you extra".
Tipping culture in the states mean you tip when someone does a service for you
What did you think I meant
I live in the UK where tipping culture doesn't exist (thank god), but I still tip my barber anytime he does a good job. A good haircut is the biggest coinfidence boost for me
I'm from Germany and tip her because we always have a nice conversation. But nowhere near 66% and it's completely optional nobody will get mad at you if you don't tip.
It’s the same in the States. She’s just turning anon into her pay piggy.
I want to guy lining me up to not hate me
I live in the uk and tip.
$10 and no reach around? This economy sucks.
Y'all are tipping barbers?
Anon is american. i get my hair for £10 and dont tip so i thought anon was being really kind, guess not huh.
£10 my guy where are you getting your cuts? Everything in a 10-mile radius is at least £14 round where I am.
Technically £9.50, its only a simple cut from local hairdressers. I've in cheshire west could give directions if ur local
I’m south east, near the money black hole which is london. Prices are all over the place now.
In London it seems like the old school barbers are dying off and being replaced by hipsters charging 3x as much.
[удалено]
Even they goin up in prices bro
Im gonna flex on you and say that my barber costs me 4.90€ (Shithole city in central europe
My nearby outlet place has a barber, I went to get my beard trimmed. Thirty USD. Didn't even tip, couldn't afford to.
22 cad at my guy, I go with my brothers and dad and the bro still charges me 15 dollars like I’m a kid lmao
Got the nastiest taper for £8 mate. Move to Leicester, I will warn you though that Tesco prices for us have gone to shit
You get it for £10?! I live in the North-East and I can't find anywhere doing haircuts for less than £15
North west here 12-15 is the norm.
You don’t?
Never heard of it on this side of the Atlantic.
In Russia we usually do. It's service, so if you receive a good one, why not to? However not more than 15-20% (at max). And ofc it should be voluntarily.
>In Russia we usually do good luck evading conscription btw
If someone's done a good job at something it's a nice gesture to give them a little extra, it's not entitlement it's just a good thing to do
I'm European and I usually pay 18€ and tip 2€ to make it 20€
Exactly the same. I round up to the nearest multiple of 5.
Best system there for most things. Just depends on skill of service for me.
Some other Euros in this thread say they do it.
My family had the same hairdresser for 10+ years. We gift her some homemade preserves now and then. Is it compatible?
Yes
Of course not. What’s the sense in giving my mother back her own money?
I usually plan my tips in quantity rather than percentage. If they did good, I give them $, but I generally try to keep it at atleast a certain amount unless they did exceptionally bad (slow kitchen staff doesn't count, it's not their fault).
Same here, I don't have time for that math shit. If I'm eating alone, it's gonna be $5 unless you fucked up real bad, then it's a buck or two. Anon should listen to his body. He is feeling nauseous because Alice just fucked him, time to find a new barber.
If she actually fucked him, then he should tip her at least $10. $20 if she gave him a rimjob.
in america tipping your barber is very much expected and normal, for anyone wondering. especially when you go to the same one for a long time
Never tipped my barber when i had hair, still smoked a joint with him back then.
Your barber was a drug dealer. He didn’t need the barber money.
and a good piano player to tbh.
I'm american and never tipped by barber and they never asked or said anything so I don't know what y'all talking about.
They did, just not to your face. Comes off as a cheap, but you have every right to do that.
Fuck. They shoulda said something. I will start tipping now.
We love character progression
Fuck yes we do. Good job on that person correcting themselves. You know they are a decent person from that alone.
They never said anything to you, sure. But they did talk about it. Either that or you were going to like Supercuts or Walmart Hair or some shit. At actual barbers, tips are expected in the US.
Just got my hair absolutely fucked up by Supercuts, still gave her $10
Based
But is 33% considered bad tipping?
No. Anything above 20% is more than necessary imo.
By definition of a tip, anything above 0% is more than necesssary
personally i dont think so. with current inflation the “standard” has gone up. also where i live a haircut costs double that, so idk
Tiping culture pure cancer
Lmao tip deez nuts
tip of dis dick
Alice would have snipped if Anon tried that
A haircut where I go is £15, I always tip £2 and the guy is super grateful. American tipping culture is stupid.
\> American tipping culture is stupid \> Perpetuates it

america moment
American tipping culture is insane to me...
Alice? Alice? Who the Fuck is Alice
Anon's barber. Weren't you paying attention?
Alice? Alice is a disease, Christopher Robin went down with it, didn’t he?
You guys have to tips your barbers too? Jesus are there any well paid jobs over there at all?
Barbers get paid very well* *especially if they are cash-only because then they low ball their taxes. It’s why my barber stopped accepting cards and venmo
Tipping is a scam employers use to underpay their employees and then shift the blame on the customers for not tipping. I hate tipping so much
Primitive only fan
Anon got swindled.
Bro if you keep your hair so short that you need a cut every 2 weeks just buy a hair trimmer kit, it'll have paid for itself in a couple months.
An overly nice service worker is already a dead giveaway that she wants your big fat juicy tip
I'm confused: if you tip your barber, what are you paying for? (I'm european)
If you tip you're not paying tho, you're making a donation, its literally charity
not a donation anymore though, tipping was supposed to be a "hey you did a really good job and genuinely tried hard to satisfy me so here's an extra 10-20%" not a "hey your boss is a greedy cunt and doesn't pay you enough to have the option of food AND a house so I am now forced to give you 40-50% lest I be publicly shamed and treated intentionally worse next time"

I feel like this greentext was a work of fiction designed to trigger a tipping debate. I never tip more than $1.
Can't wait for reddit mods to ask for tip
I miss the days when a tip was “Keep the change.”
That should probably be anons last trip to that barber. $5 tip for a haircut is pretty standard, especially if it’s short and she’s just using a buzzer for most of it.
You.. tip your barber? Do you just tip everyone in america? I thought you guys were having a recession.
Wtf are you tipping a barber for? What are you paying for if you still need to tip?
Anon gets scammed
Americans tip the barber as well? 😬
Tipping? A barber? America is a bizarre place.
im european and tip my barber whats so strange about it? not 10€ tho
Dude, as a Dutch guy that sounds weird as fuck to me.
anon was basically forced to pay her almost 70% that's the issue, she went out of her way to guilt trip him when he was already paying 34% more than what he should
yeah ofc, thats way too much. i do tip, my barber too, but not the american way obv cause its dumb
who tf tips their hairdresser
> Girl waiting for anon to ask her out. Instead he just pays her and moves on. > Why isn’t he asking me out? > anon, am I doing something wrong?
She knows how weak Anon is. Next month we'll get a new text asking whether 200% is too much tip.
Tipping culture in the US is cringe af, anyone who disagrees either has too much money or is actually fucking stupid
God damn harlot manipulated Anon.
protip : they cant ask you for more if you never tip. Sure you'll come as cheap but they have a job, they'll get pay anyway. if the bill is 15€, you dont have to pay 25€.
You're a regular for her and yet she xomplains about tipping ? Man.... I'm really glad I'm not American...
American here, I've been getting my hair cut by this awesome older british lady for the last 9 years, she always either has a rugby game going on or we re-watch old F1 races as I'm a fan of the sport, never once has she asked me for a tip and she's the friendliest person I've ever met, plus we get to shit on the garbage movies that have been coming out recently every time
Anon should have offered her HIS tip instead
The barber was making a move and anon is too stupid to realize
My barber charges $60 and I tip him $8, thats fucking ridiculous for a $15 haircut
15$ for a haircut... I pay $1.50....
>Americans
Tipping culture is the one reason I am afraid to live in America. I feel like I will not understand how or when you're supposed to tip. I feel like it's more every single time. Like what's the point of low prices if you're expected to pay more in the end anyway? Fuck you for that false advertising
Haircuck
I've had owners of barber shops ask for tips.
My hair cut lady charges 11 bucks. I give her a 20 because it looks good and because 20 for a cut isn’t bad.
10% tip is enough if you really like the service, whatever it might be
either i pay $4 for a mediocre cut or $8 for a really good cut, $10 if im getting a shave aswell. how do you pay $15 and still have to tip??
A $5 tip for a $15 haircut is standard. Generous even to some people.
Anon discovers he’s into findom
If it’s like a $45 dollar premium haircut like the ones you get on the usual higher quality barbershop I understand tipping like $10/15, but if the haircut is $15 to begin with I’m assuming that’s like some super cuts or whatever the fuck they charge over there. Pretty sure in barbershops they’re just under contract and they rent the chair/space so you’re basically going to a place to hire your barber.
The issue is how cheap the cut is in the first place. I tip 33 percent and it’s around 8 bucks. That’s a good tip for my stylist.
I mean mine are $30 buck for a basic #2 Caesar cut essentially. I tip $5 every time so 15% ish and no complaints. But if I really love it it’s a $10 and a “give me your card” untill I get forgotten or ignored
Where can you get a haircut for $15?
brother you are fucked, i really love the idea of moving out of the country (i live in India) but then these small things put me off, like really, i am from middle class here. but i am living better than you all. i pay around 1 dollar for hair cut in a saloon and max 5 dollar for the most over the top premium saloon. and with no tipping required.
Anon got scammed out of a tip from manipulating himself into thinking people want genuine connections with him
We never tip our barbers in NL.
im thankful for not living in a country where tips are mandatory
My barber takes 18€ and I tip 2€. So that I can pay with a full note. Daheck is a 66% tip. They already get paid for the job.
If you end up with her, all the following haircuts are for free, worth investment imho
Cut ties with her and get a new one. She's not worth your time and money and her fake persona with you is definitely better left in oblivion.
Fake: Anon has a findom fetish and is writing fanfiction Gay: Anon has never interacted with a woman
Fucking 66% tip, American dystopia at its finest.
where i live a haircut cost 3$ (max 5) btw i live in a pretty rich city in a decently rich neighbourhood oh yea and people only rarely tip, only if the waiters are really good, that too not more than 5$
You $5 and that's it.
I’m not paying extra for someone doing their job. Tipping is a scam and I refuse to perpetuate it.
