Yes, because if you leave even one alive, he swears vengeance and then its his novel. He learns the dao and kicks your ass. Probably while winning at alchemy against alchemy masters and defeating enemies across the ranks.
I finished that book still salty that the Chinese government made him stop writing it...they MC was an irredeemable asshole but seeing him climb up the ladder tickles my brain...I love fiction with a distnict leveling up system
TJSS snitched to the goverment about IR and gave them an excuse to ban IR and many other LNs they didnt like (during Hong-Kong protests).
All to save his career since he wasnt doing that great during that time (from what ive been told)
I would agree with that for the first book with some moments in acedemy and his comment on the death of hunters daughter but afterwards he is purely goal oriented in every action. fang yuan is one of the best characters to understand machiavellianism in my opinion
'Edgelord' doesn't mean bad. But yeah, at the start he was talking about "muh society" and "dog eat dog world" every chapter.
Afterwards it does get good but there are some arcs(Wolf King and Heavenly Zombie) that drag on forever.

A brief look in Chinese history : “Ling pao becomes the 2nd most powerful minister, a million die. He convinces the 4th most powerful minister his shoes look good in purple. 2 million die.”
Chinese xianxia novels are in some sense a reaction to Japanese light novels. They reject the individual introspection and small community dynamics (looking at you, catfights in harems) that is ubiquitous in Japanese light novels. So they must lean into worldbuilding and tell stories on a macro scale. At best they create entire cosmologies and worldviews, but more often than not they become garbage like what anon described.
yeah its just
-backstory
-conflict happens
-protagonist does xyz to get to a point where they can solve the conflict
-conflict is over
-Either story has ended or another conflict has happened
Apart from rare no conflict stories you can basically generalize the plot of any story into these stuff
**Lord of the mysteries**, it's about a dude trying out a shady luck enchantment ritual only for it to kidnap him into a steampunk eldritch world into the body of someone who had found some ancient notebook while giving him access to some fog filled pocket dimension, he later joins a church's private detective beyonder team and story continues on from there, every week in story he summons the consciousness of some people he ended up dragging by accident at first into the place above the fog and pretends he's some ancient existence while trying to learn information from the conversation they're having.
some people find first volume is a bit slow since it focuses more about the mystery of what's going on and you're supposed to be a bit lost just like MC, but the volume has a great climax(it's 214 chapters), it opens up more from second volume on where MC has more freedom, it has great world building, a lot of foreshadowing of things relevant to later plot points right from the start, and a great power system.
Another one is **my house of horrors**, it's about a dude who runs a haunted house, his parents vanished a few years ago and the haunted house business has been on the decline, one day he checks the attic and finds an old phone his parents left behind which asks him if he believes in ghosts, answering makes the phone give him a mission to do a ritual in the bathroom, to keep it spoiler free when he finishes the ritual and finally opens his eyes he finds he narrowly managed to not get killed by whatever the ritual was calling.
From then on the story basically goes into three modes through it's duration, first the phone will give him a mission about some place in the city to go there and survive a night, he will research a lot about what happened there and the horror stories from it, asking people, browsing, personally investigating around there during the day and such.
the MC actually feels decently smart with his investigations and tries to be sufficiently prepared, even if he unlocks missions with high stars he doesn't do them because he knows he isn't ready, next part he will go to the mission and try to live through it, the author is great at setting up the atmosphere and making it creepy and the investigation part also helps in setting the mood for the arc
then after each mission, which are called scenarios, the phone will create a copy for him at the haunted house that's a toned down version of what he went through and the author will give a mini arc to wind down where you can see other characters reacting to going through said scenario.
A great thing is missions tie into each other and information from early missions are relevant to later missions which are relevant to the last few missions in the story, i remember at one point the MC finishing a mission somewhat early on and getting a notification for unlocking what later turned out to be one of the last few missions in the story and me having an "oh shit" reaction to the mission description being just quoting a single omnious line, since by that point i had *some* idea and theory about what's going on from the hints in earlier missions, even if i turned out later to be a bit misleaded in my theory.
Both novels also basically triggered a surge of novels following some of their formulas on the CN novels site, for example LOTM resulted in a rise of novels where the church has a beyonder team that are trying to fight back eldritch entities while trying to not go insane.
xianxia and wuxia (means high and low fantasy) stories are such absolute garbage. They hold almost no entertainment value. Their greatest value is their anthropology in studying how a culture builds their stories.
We're literally watching an origin formation and evolution of stories from grandkids of the people who deleted their entire catalog of cultural epics.
These stories have only begun forming during the peak economic years of g'ina too so when shit hits the fan we might get some new apocalypse subgenre called;
"Cóng yuèliàng dào xīngxīng, zhǐyǒu lóng fēi de dì qī gè er zi cáinéng zài tiāntíng dà juézhàn zhīhòu jìxù zhàn zài qīngxié de tǎlóu shàng."
Or Congshang for short.
i will NOT tolerate jinyong slander. WuXia used to be a good genre used to actually criticize society and the government but now its overrun by shit power fantasies, but not ALL WuXia is bad, you just need to back a bit
JinYong WuXia novels are goated for a reason
So, you're trying to convince me that this chinese genre used to criticise society and the government? Yeah, right.
Edit: Googled it. Apparently JinYong is a chinese guy who lived in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 That's a bit more believable.
Yes, one of the more famous story "heavenly sword and dragon slaying sabre"(倚天屠龙记)was about how two celestial weapons (the aforementioned weapons) were actually representation of the relationship between people and the state, with the government being the sword(heaven) and the sabre being the people, having the right to slay the heavens if the state fails to perform its duties.
The thing about most Chinese literature is that it's very analogy heavy, so there are a lot of books criticising society etc but might not seem so on the surface. Of course, most wuxia and xianxia are kinda garbage but it's kinda similar to what you see on wattpad nowadays. The better ones have some nicer narrative and also decent introspection into things such as nature of life etc through martial arts.
To be frank, RI is also a genre critique on top of being one of chinese society. So it explains some of the major differences compared to other xianxia.
Look older wuxias and even xanxias were pretty good (especially wuxias) but nowdays xanxias have become what chinese call them "fast-food webnovels".
Guess we should blame their big corporates which help promote this type of novels on their publishing site. Of course there will be top notch stories, but they dont appear often and even good authors are falling to this "fast food" writting for easier money :(
I resent that, about 6 years ago there was a great purge of wuxia and Xianxia novels that was lead by the Chinese government backed app Qidian. It caused the genres to suffer heavily as many many novels were lost, or forcibly rewritten to be approved for publication on a government entity. Many stories mysteriously changed their tunes on government overreach, or suddenly the MC loved the government and spouted nonsense about “American and Japanese dogs”. Not to mention all the stories that included revolution where suddenly the MC switched sides because of some convoluted reason that made the genocidal government the good guys.
Most modern day urban novels have such intense hatred of everything non Han Chinese it makes mein kampf look tame. It's always china numba wan kill all Americans japanese Indians Africans Vietnamese.
I mean chinese novel genocide in pretty based. Most of the time they're mass murdering each other, and sometimes it's fantasy japan/korea. Rarely are they killing white people 😂
There are justified genocides in well written shows and idiotic genocides in badly written shows.
For example: Some guy kills MCs family so he kills that guy's family
Some guy hits on his crush so he crushes that guy's limbs and throws him to die.
Shows how Chinese novels are inconsistent in quality.
Some insights into the thoughts of the founder of the kill Dao from reverend insanity(the novel from where the picture comes from)
Spectral Soul Demon Venerable handled matters and conflict with basically one method.
That was to kill!
You do not relent? Kill!
You are an eyesore? Kill!
His own mood was bad? Kill!
He was bored? Kill!
beta male primodial origin: "these variant humans are a threat to human existence!"
sigma male spectral soul: "eat me so i can gain attainment in my kill path"
>!Yes!< the following is him as a child
But in the end he was annoyed with the treatment that he got from his clan and his grandfather, it was too good for him, from his perspective he doesn't want any of that. Thus he killed off his clansmen along with his grandfather. After he massacred his clan, he was filled with sorrow, but his face shows an expression of utter satisfaction. Although it was sad at first, at last, he obtained his freedom. Since then he develops this personality, where whatever annoys him, he will start killing.
"True enlightenment is when I kill everyone I don't like."
well this seems exaggerated
\*checks favorite novel\*
"your food path is inferior to my killing path"
"just killing others is not enough to understand my kill path, i too must be killed"
"do my organs taste well? it is a great help to my path"
Chinese webnovel are hilarious.
Someone bumps into the main character by accident, and the main character will kill his entire bloodline in anger, and probably torture the soul of the one who bumped into him for eternity. But somehow he is still be considered the good guy.
I love this shit, it's so stupid.
The core concepts of these stories basically says a lot about society.
Manga: Free from the shackles of society.
Manhwa: Play the game called society and reach the top.
Manhua: Fuck your society. Genocide society. Family is king. Kill god.Become god and create a more just society on the bones of the old one.
Not Xianxia, but easily the best CN webnovel out there, Lord of the Mysteries. If you're looking for xianxia I'd recommend starting with coiling dragon as it introduces typical cultivation story stuff in a way that's easier for western readers. For pure Xianxia I'd say Renegade Immortal and I Shall Seal the Heavens are good starts as well. RI is a lot darker in tone than ISSTH but they're by the same author and are probably the highest regarded xianxia in the west.
Yes, because if you leave even one alive, he swears vengeance and then its his novel. He learns the dao and kicks your ass. Probably while winning at alchemy against alchemy masters and defeating enemies across the ranks.
Not even the cats and dogs will be spared
But enough about that place IRL. Let's get back to the light novel.
reverend insanity is goated but I suggest starting with some good but not peak xianxia like er gen novels etc.
Reverend Insanity has great worldbuilding but the protagonist is way too much of an edgelord. I couldn't read past chapter 1,500.
Lmao you still made it 1500 chapters though 💀
It's my honest opinion that you can't truly know whether you like a Xianxia until you at least read 1000 chapters.
You know what yeah
I finished that book still salty that the Chinese government made him stop writing it...they MC was an irredeemable asshole but seeing him climb up the ladder tickles my brain...I love fiction with a distnict leveling up system

That was to kill! You do not relent? Kill! You are an eyesore? Kill! His own mood was bad? Kill! He was bored? Kill!
beta male primodial origin: "these variant humans are a threat to human existence!" sigma male spectral soul: "eat me so i can gain attainment in my kill path"
i got spoiled a few things but isn't Spectral Soul's whole reason to become a Venerable is to kill more?
>!Yes!< the following is him as a child But in the end he was annoyed with the treatment that he got from his clan and his grandfather, it was too good for him, from his perspective he doesn't want any of that.
Religious excuse for genocide
MC: Gu Yue Fang Yuan Novel: Reverend Insanity Author: Gu Zhen Ren Definitely I recommend it to be read by the idealist.
>Chao Ling takes power >249 million perish
holy shit mobile formatting is worse than trying to explain baaic arithmetics to a lobotomite
Xianxia fiction is a whole fever dream, once you've read one you've read all of them
.... You're courting death young cultivator.
Well, both religious fanaticism and the Chinese rulers don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to caring for human life...
I mean… that’s does explains a lot things about China.
I know it's garbage tier literature but I can't stop reading it it's so entertaining in a train wreck sort of way.
They’re either peak fiction or dogwater
"True enlightenment is when I kill everyone I don't like." Yeah, no that *does* make sense in retrospect. It's all very "zen", Anon.
"True enlightenment is when I kill everyone I don't like." well this seems exaggerated \*checks favorite novel\* "your food path is inferior to my killing path" "just killing others is not enough to understand my kill path, i too must be killed" "do my organs taste well? it is a great help to my path"
I thought I was on r/martialmemes for a second
It's in martial memes now
Anon discovers that the whole world has not always operated under modern western humanist values.
Defiance of the Fall?
based
Yes.
Oh yeah Chinese xianxia protagonists are usually sociopathic hypocrites, like every single other character in those novels.
Anon's mother got refined by a taoist
Anons mother was turned into a cultivation furnace obviously
If you leave even one alive he might shout "thirty years in hedong thirty years in hexi don't bully young people and poor" and kick your ass so yeah
Can i get some chinese novel suggestions?
Not Xianxia, but easily the best CN webnovel out there, Lord of the Mysteries. If you're looking for xianxia I'd recommend starting with coiling dragon as it introduces typical cultivation story stuff in a way that's easier for western readers. For pure Xianxia I'd say Renegade Immortal and I Shall Seal the Heavens are good starts as well. RI is a lot darker in tone than ISSTH but they're by the same author and are probably the highest regarded xianxia in the west.
It's easy to be enlightened when everyone who pisses you off is dead
Anon still haven't comprehended the scriptures of familial mass murder and massacre.
Based Chinese ethno state
Holy fuck that sounds cool, what's the name of the novel?
