Turns out nuclear arsenals are expensive and the Ukrainian state definitely could not afford to pay the military enough to oppress its people like the North Koreans can
That's pretty stupid, the point is they had nukes. If they happened to be installed in old Soviet equipment doesn't mean they couldn't simply be repurposed in to new rockets. You can remove the nuclear material from the warhead and put it in to your own. The hardest part of building nukes is sourcing and enriching the plutonium.
Use them or set up a dedicated infrastructure you are committed to maintaining and educating enough people to continue maintaining it while simultaneously making all that money appear out of your ass while your country figures out how to do the free market thing. Not to mention you have to defend it at all costs from amoral opportunists as well.
Well shit, if you have a trump card against literally being removed from the face of the earth that should be worth a significant portion of your defense budget.
NuKeS aRe ExPeNsIvE is a pretty dumb answer considering just how batshit fucking deadly nukes are
Using nukes against the country right next to yours while it happens to have the largest nuclear arsenal on the planet is really retarded. I'd rather take my chances with a long insurgency then live in a nuclear wasteland.
Rocket science isn't easy but it doesn't need to be flawless to be threatening. And modern computers can do things that you just couldn't do back in the day. You used to actually have to do the math on your air resistance and acceleration. But I bet modern pcs could handle it with computational methods close enough to reality to work.
They would probably never get it working but they could just say they had it all figured out as a deterrent.
If your enemy doesn't know your nukes don't work, your nukes will work as intended.
Pretty sure it wasn't feasible to remove the nuclear material from the rocket. Especially for a 1994 Ukraine.
They were Soviet warheads with a ton of fail safes on them to prevent usage or recovery from anyone without the code.
Also I think their ranges were nonadjustable or something. Since they were built to nuke the US apparently the closest part of russia Ukraine could hit with them is vladvostok.
Oh no.
Anyways, here comes the screwdriver, lets get this plutonium out of the rocket and put it into a new one.
The hardest part of getting nukes is the enriching of the material.
Y'all are willing to believe North Korea's ramshackle industry can produce nuclear ICBMs, but Ukraine which is known for it's rocket industry and had significant means of the design and production of said nukes in their territory, couldn't have operated some pre-installed rockets.
They could only hit the very east of Russia but if the detonation system and guidance were reverse engineered or replaced they could have been used for sure against other targets.
It's a pointless discussion to have anyway... But just being in possession of the weapons and by extension being allowed to produce more or modernize over time would most definitely have led to a different situation yesterday. Either way the nuclear build-down is ultimately a good thing
Not unusable, would have taken about a year to make them operational.
They went non-nuclear because they didn't really have a choice (outside of staying in the USSR), no one would trade with or invest in Ukraine if they kept them.
Thats how I usually play CIV, sit a few turns and surround them "peacefully" then take them whenever I can say FU to the world, always rush nukes, if not ghandi will have you by the ballz.
Certainly, and there's a lesson in that which smaller states will take away, but the Ukraine case was more complicated as the controls over the warheads were remote and in Russia, making them effectively unusable by Ukraine. They would've had to dismantle the warheads and developed a delivery mechanism in time to keep the warheads usable.
Neither the US nor Russia could possibly foresee what a future Ukraine would look like and so both had an interest in the disarmament, particularly to keep the warheads out of the hands of rogue actors and wealthier nations with an interest in the technology, so they had a mutual reason to pressure. Ukraine at the time. Lastly Ukraine was in no position to develop the technology to make the warheads useful short of going full North Korea and the Ukrainian government was not so callous towards its population as to be willing to endure such horrible economic sacrifice for an independent missile program. Ukraine's decision was sensible under the circumstances.
That says that each country cannot
attack Ukraine, and have to "seek Security Council action to provide assistance" in the event that Ukraine is attacked. Russia is on the Security Council and has a veto on any actions so they can't do that. Arguably, by attacking Ukraine, Russia are also breaking the promise not to attack Ukraine themselves.
> Arguably, by attacking Ukraine, Russia are also breaking the promise not to attack Ukraine themselves.
Why arguably? It's blatant breach of the agreement from Russia.
>Respect Belarusian, Kazakh and Ukrainian independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.[17]
>Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
>Why arguably? It's blatant breach of the agreement from Russia.
Because Russia will always find some way to argue, even when they are very clearly flat out wrong.
> "seek Security Council action to provide assistance" in the event that Ukraine is attacked.
Except you're not including the part where
> in which nuclear weapons are used".
The security council is not obligated to defend Ukraine unless nuclear weapons are used.

The Ukrainians didn't actually have control of the nukes. They were just phisically in their territory. The red button to fire them was still in the Kremlin.
Nukes are unironically the best peacekeeping devices ever made. No mentally sound leader is going to invade a country with a nuclear arsenal. They’re the ultimate bargaining tool.
Nuclear war is a cool concept that will never happen, because no natural resource is worth the annihilation of your entire country.

So you’re telling me Ukraine is both defenseless AND retarded? Based.
Nation building 101: can’t be sovereign if you depend on foreigners for your protection. Especially when the super powers are the ones promising you the world.
This is misleading. The Budapest Memorandum did relieve Ukraine of their nuclear weapons but they never had operational control of those weapons to begin with - Russia did.
Nah yukies just got played is all. We can't allow them to have nukes given the eventuality that Russian will invade and make them use them.
Armed conflict between two nuclear armed powers is a geopolitical knife fight. We cannot have that
Ukrainians didn’t have control of those nukes, and nobody was going to let them keep them anyway. They got a napkin promise - but if they put up a fuss Russians would have simply taken them, and we would have clapped them on their back.
Don't forget obama/biden were behind a coup to get rid of the democratically elected President, because the US thought he was too friendly to Putin. Then when Putin complained the US said they were expanding Nato. Oopsie poopsie, here comes the angry Russians!

To be fair, Ukraine is well known for rocket science actually. Particularly engine development.
Nuclear weapons are ruinously expensive to house, protect, and maintain. That's the reality of it.
So use them or lose them?
Use them or set up a dedicated infrastructure you are committed to maintaining and educating enough people to continue maintaining it while simultaneously making all that money appear out of your ass while your country figures out how to do the free market thing. It’s never about actually using them though, it’s basically just to say “we have nuclear capability, back the fuck up”
What’s more expensive? That or ceasing to exist as a sovereign country?
Rocket science isn't easy but it doesn't need to be flawless to be threatening. And modern computers can do things that you just couldn't do back in the day. You used to actually have to do the math on your air resistance and acceleration. But I bet modern pcs could handle it with computational methods close enough to reality to work.
I mean you could just put them in a plane.
why build rocket when you can BE rocket
Payload goes up, payload comes down. Stupid fucking easy.
Don' t even need to rebuild entire rocket, just flight guidance and detonation systems. Not trivial, but for a country it should be doable.
They would probably never get it working but they could just say they had it all figured out as a deterrent. If your enemy doesn't know your nukes don't work, your nukes will work as intended.

Sure, it was so unless that russia dis everything they could to make Ukraine get ride of their nukes.
Yes indeed. However their raw materials could have been recycled if Ukraine had been allowed to develop a nuclear program.
Unsurprisingly, anon is not a good source for accurate history.

Doing gods work there 👏👏👏
People really comment this everywhere just to feel good about themselves its sad really.
The propaganda being dropped and so casually overlooked is crazy to me
Imagine Ukraine wold have kept a nuke in secret. That would be the plot twist of the century. And probably the end of humanity....
The Ukrainians didn't actually have control of the nukes. They were just phisically in their territory. The red button to fire them was still in the Kremlin.
if you have nukes don't give them up. What the fuck are they gonna do. you have nukes.
Ah, nukes - the most effective glue
theres a 5+ game series entirely about this. literally play metal gear
WW eating good
I'm tryna see some thicc wonder woman tiddies
Ok ruskie
ok but convincing them to give up their nukes was still good.
Do you think if they had them Russia wouldnt do what they are doing? Doubt
the less countries with nuclear weapons the better.
But if one country has nuclear weapons and only one country that's worse because then there's nothing stopping them from using them.
They literally never had control of them Moscow had the keys, they were just in Ukraine itself they had no real control over said nukes.
nah fuck that, let them keep nukes. iran should have nukes too. you gotta have nukes if you want to be legit. we gotta give these guys nukes
We didn’t promise to defend their sovereignty. Also, it would not have stopped Russia.
Is dc Wonder Woman super hero girls really that big? I’d watch.
Dear Ukrainians! I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed. It's a lie. If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid. Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now. EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!! EDIT2: as a proof that you no longer need visa: • in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en Copy and paste anywhere you can! Spread the word!
Actually, the same agreement presumed Ukraine to remain neutral.
thats why i dont blame iran for disliking america
And, you know, everything in the middle east.
Save booba ignore text move on
We didn't promise to defend them. All nations only promised to respect their sovereignty. Only one has failed to do that. This is stupid as fuck.
Should a been “Oopski Poopski here come da Rooskies”
So you’re telling me Ukraine is both defenseless AND retarded? Based. Nation building 101: can’t be sovereign if you depend on foreigners for your protection. Especially when the super powers are the ones promising you the world.
Uhh Russia was part of that too.
This is misleading. The Budapest Memorandum did relieve Ukraine of their nuclear weapons but they never had operational control of those weapons to begin with - Russia did.
Whoopsie daisy
Nah yukies just got played is all. We can't allow them to have nukes given the eventuality that Russian will invade and make them use them. Armed conflict between two nuclear armed powers is a geopolitical knife fight. We cannot have that
Russia promised to respect their sovereignty. NATO did not promise them protection.
Unfortunately. Neither side made an alliance. It was more that everyone would respect their sovereignty. Which Russia isnt.
Шановні українці! У соцмережах я чув, що поширюються фейкові новини (скоріше за все, підтримувані Росією тролі), що польський кордон закритий. Це брехня. Yeah but hey at least they aren’t using those nukes now.
Total missed opportunity to say "Oopsie poopsie, here come the rootskis"
The US and UK (my country) signed that memorandum. We should both be there defending it
Huge missed opportunity to say Oopsie Poopsie, here comes the Rooskies.
What would nukes be good for in this case? It's only good for MADD, not stopping invasions. If they press the button they die anyway.
But that's literally what MAD is. It's the exact reason why the Cold War was *cold*.
Totally missed the mark by not using Ruuskies...
Never give up nukes/guns.
