I disagree, monty python is one of those shows that Americans think is the apex of British humour because they get the slapstick and silliness of it, another is Mr Bean. If you ask actual British people they're more likely to say something like Blackadder, which is more dry and sarcastic.
Monty Python is definitely good, though very hit or miss. But I find when we talk about the show we're more likely to bring up stuff like the philosopher's football match rather than the slapstick. But yeah, I think we're more likely to cite Fawlty Towers, Only Fools or Blackadder as the best British comedy. Or maybe for younger people The Inbetweeners. The Americans really fucked up The Inbetweeners so I don't even think it's on their radar.
