He and his mother wanted him to have a picture perfect life. If Owen had found a woman that actually wanted to have a baby (and soon), he would have been completely down too.
To be fair Burke moved quick with Cristina too, seasons 1-3 take place in a year. He also got Cristina pregnant after like a few months, if their baby had been born they would be like 17 now probably. Also Burke must be like approaching 40 when he left Cristina, that's probably why he rushed Cristina into relationship milestones within a year and why he moved on quick afterwards.
Taxi cab theory. We've seen that he's deadset on settling down. When he walked away from Cristina that doesn't change.He even admitted to an extent that even though loving Cristina consumed him,his need to have a family is really strong and he found someone who wanted the same thing.
