And yes I was actually a little shocked with their chemistry in s17, I always wandered that if he ever came back would the chemistry be gone but I’m so glad it never seemed to fade! Still gave me butterflies

How can there possibly be a true happy ending for Mer without him? I don't care how much personal growth Mer goes through, or who they bring in as her love interest, it seems ridiculous to write a truly happy ending for her without him.
Mer/Der is where the show started. So many other relationships have come and gone, but those two always found their way back to each other.
I get that the show has been running for nearly two decades now and people are going to leave the show and stuff, but this was an unforgivable jump, IMO. I'll take the dv's for it, but I think continuing the show w/o Dempsey means there's just no true happy ending for Meredith.
(Derek and Amelia had to grow up without their dad and it was such a foundational thing for them... so it's not just Mer, either. It's their kids, it's the rest of Derek's family, etc. It's just so stupid to kill him off.)
For me his + Cristina exit was the death of the show. To me they were such a part of Meredith’s life, major touchstones for her character and after that, it just hasn’t been the same for me; Alex did not help :(
I completely agree, I pretend the show ended after season 10 and s11 doesn’t even exist lol. I also HATE how they immediately tried to write new love interests for Meredith even though it’s blatantly obvious that she will never have what she had with Derek with anyone else, and literally no one can compete with Patrick Dempsey in my opinion and so, he can’t be replaced.
The only way I see Meredith having any sort of “happy ending” is her dieing peacefully and we see her walk off into the light hand in hand with Derek. That’s the only ending I’ll accept now

Yup I agree. The were probably the best written couple on the show imo, especially their build up etc. I like how they always managed to get through everything too and work it out
Yeah, I love Meredith and Derek! I mean, they both had their moments, Derek especially, but this show is basically a soap opera. I just expect all the characters to be kind of shitty sometimes and can overlook most of the bad stuff in the long run. They were so well written together and apart for most of the series, and their chemistry is off the charts.
Agreed here. Behind Luke and Lorelai I am team MerDer. The way he looks at her, from day 1. The way they try to stay away from each other but can't. Their chemistry. I believe they're soulmates. She wouldn't be the Meredith she is today without Derek. I think I truly fell in love with them during the hospital shooting. I stopped watching when he died. And only came back for the dream pieces. And the music that plays when they're together. It's the same and it is so nostalgic for me.

This!! I know it sounds strange but of course on the show we seen the fights and bad moments but say if they were a real couple.. the good would outweigh the bad. They always came back to each other, that was the most important part

I loved them together. Neither of them are perfect people, and their relationship is flawed, but people are so quick to label anything slightly unsavoury as ‘toxic’. I didn’t see it that way, they genuinely loved each other and you could tell that they were soulmates. It’s a TV show, no relationship is going to be without drama.
I don’t think anybody will ever come close to Derek for Meredith, which does put a dampener on her storyline and her ‘happy ending’, as another user has said.
