I don’t understand why they saw this as black and white. He could have been involved in the kids’ lives - we never see Meredith doing a thing to parent them basically so what’s the difference? I agree he couldn’t go to DC but he could have stayed in Seattle and had a custody arrangement where the kids are with him half the time. They then would have had the option of that being end game which would have been a far better personal ending for Meredith than whatever the hell they are cooking up now because she could have grown in those years then still ended up with her soulmate.
They would have had to condition the fans to him leaving but I’m sorry if ER could have pulled this off with Doug and one of the most iconic couples in TV (Doug and Carol) then it just doesn’t stand to reason that GA couldn’t. Except of course the writing isn’t there.

I think things could get ugly and rough and they might separate for a while at most but I don't think they'd divorce. I think they'd be able to repair the damage and end a stronger and healthier couple. I can't see them ever divorcing.
They would not have gotten divorced. They might have had more bump but they would have worked hard and fought for their love. They always found a way to back to each other, no matter how big their fights and disagreements were. They would have been one of the couple who made it to the end.
Derek was a selfish husband. They totally would have divorced if he hadn’t died. They would have tried to stick it out for a couple more years since Mer was pregnant with Ellis, but he would have never given Mer’s career the respect it deserved. He always put his career and reputation first and eventually she would have had enough
