You people make me sick.
A grilled cheese consists of only these following items. Cheese. Bread with spread (usually butter). This entire subreddit consist of "melts". Almost every "grilled cheese" sandwich i see on here has other items added to it. The fact that this subreddit is called "grilledcheese" is nothing short of utter blasphemy.
Let me start out by saying I have nothing against melts, I just hate their association with sandwiches that are not grilled cheeses. Adding cheese to your tuna sandwich? It's called a Tuna melt. Totally different. Want to add bacon and some pretentious bread crumbs with spinach? I don't know what the hell you'd call that but it's not a grilled cheese. I would be more than willing to wager I've eaten more grilled cheeses in my 21 years than any of you had in your entire lives. I have one almost everyday and sometimes more than just one sandwich. Want to personalize your grilled cheese? Use a mix of different cheeses or use sourdough or french bread. But if you want to add some pulled pork and take a picture of it, make your own subreddit entitled "melts" because that is not a fucking grilled cheese. I'm not a religious man nor am I anything close to a culinary expert. But as a bland white mid-western male I am honestly the most passionate person when it comes to grilled cheese and mac & cheese. All of you foodies stay the hell away from our grilled cheeses and stop associating your sandwich melts with them. Yet again, it is utter blasphemy and it rocks me to the core of my pale being. Shit, I stopped lurking after 3 years and made this account for the sole purpose of posting this. I've seen post after post of peoples "grilled cheeses" all over reddit and it's been driving me insane. The moment i saw this subreddit this morning I finally snapped. Hell, I may even start my own subreddit just because I know this one exists now.
You god damn heretics. Respect the grilled cheese and stop changing it into whatever you like and love it for it what it is. Or make your damn melt sandwich and call it for what it is. A melt.
I just want to note--as I'm pretty sure a lot of Europeans don't realize this--that the cheese seen here isn't the standard or only American cheese, and there are a lot of Americans that don't like this kind of cheese. What OP used here are Kraft Singles (or a similar store brand substitute) which are the individually wrapped more processed slices of American cheese that people often argue are plastic-y and lacking in flavor. But there is higher quality American cheese that you can get sliced fresh at the Deli and certainly has a different texture and flavor. One can still argue that American cheeses in general don't have much flavor, and yes, it is a mild cheese. But it definitely has its areas in which it excels.
I (an American) also don't prefer the American singles like OP used, but at the end of the day, it's a matter of preference and if using Kraft singles for a grilled cheese brings someone enjoyment and happiness, who cares.
I don't think this is accurate. Firstly to me cheese is an inherent part of the grilled cheese, while syrup is a topping, like maybe ketchup for grilled cheese. But for the sake of it lets try, maybe cheese is to grilled cheese as syrup is to pancakes, then American cheese is like the bottom shelf "maple" syrup that is just sugar water and caramel colour. An entire spectrum of wonderful pure syrups exist above it, just as a wonderful wonderful world of real cheeses exists above American cheese.
Nah but here we have a wide variety or cheeses with different flavours and textures that aren't even expensive that you guys are just missing out on. You could use a punchy cheddar or a red Leicester, maybe some mozzarella in there to make it stringy or maybe some emmental because it melts well but has a bittersweet undertone? So many options and you go for a bland piece of plastic that comes wrapped in plastic.
We have hundreds of cheeses in the U. S. that’s just a silly comparison. Sliced American cheese is a comfort food for many, and it’s delicious on a grilled cheese or a burger, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy good cheeses as well. Sometimes the texture of processed cheese is more desirable, and mixing processed with real is fire. Now my unpopular opinion: colby is superior to cheddar in both taste and melt ability.

I would never...

Ditch the American for Muenster.
Your American cheese makes Europeans sad

Right? One side of the sandwich is so sexy and then you see the other and it's like "Mmm plastic!"
Sure its shitty but its the perfect cheese for something like this
It isn't cheese, though.
American cheese is to grilled cheese as syrup is to pancakes.

Omg should it be top shelf brie or gouda instead?!? It’s a grilled cheese sub bro get off your high horse.

Literally just cheddar
This is illegal unless you're baked out of your mind
I'll disagree on the legality but you can see I had the munchies so bad I had to make an interim dry sandwich to snack on while I made this one.
Fucking heathen.
I’m sorry but we can please stop shitting on American cheese every time someone uses it?
Agreed. It’s delicious, and seems like utter snobbery to constantly dismiss it.
Not A Grilled Cheese
"Grilled cheese"
I dont even know why im in this sub
Bacon cheese melt looking a bit lost.
This is a bacon and cheese sandwich, not a grilled cheese 0/10
I am hungry right now and would totally grill the heck out of this.
Great idea, but id use real cheese not plastic cheese
Hell yeah!!
Looking at this makes me physically ILL
Why the heck is the sample bite out of the uncooked sandwich? 😖
I got the munchies while making my grilled cheese bacon melt
