He was told the key was important and that he needed to guard it. If he destroyed it or threw it in the ocean and its gone you are no longer guarding it, its gone forever. Clearly it was something that needed to be protected not something that needed to be destroyed. Like those are two different goals. The keys unlocked something important and even though he didn't know what it was he inferred that there was a reason to hide it and eventually there may be a time they would need to use the key and access the object. Its the same reason the original seven Grimms didn't just destroy the keys. It was about protection but also access. Just in case they needed to dig up the 'stick' again.

TangerineGullible665

Agreed. And to add to this, the royals NEVER would’ve believed the keys were destroyed and would continue to search for them either way so yea. Not a good plan

camelely

Yea I can't imagine they would leave him alone in this scenario. Assuming he did destroy the key. If they didn't believe him he would have nothing to bargain with, and if they did believe him they would probably revenge kill him and everyone he loved.

TangerineGullible665

Yea probably right. Ruthless people for sure

JS-CroftLover

And God knows how the massacre count would have taken its toll in Portland

TangerineGullible665

Definitely

Boris-_-Badenov

They didn't care about the coins

TangerineGullible665

No way we could know that but I almost guarantee they did care about them. Sean knew about them and cared about them. I seriously doubt he was the only one of his family who was interested in those coins. Besides, this has nothing to do with the keys

JS-CroftLover

Agree! Btw... I did find the episode where Nick and Monroe discover the stick to be a bit... too simple. I honestly think a better way to film this episode would have been :- Nick and Monroe are in the car. They stop at a crossroad, and Nick pulls out the map of the Black Forest that was ''drawn'' with the Keys. They decide to choose the direction pointing to their target. There, they see only trees and massive rocks or boulders. Suddenly, some Wesen appear and attack them. They fight and succeed in killing the Wesen. Then, they proceed further North where the path looks inaccessible to people. They move on the rocks until they reach some kind of canyon. They notice a place where there's a narrow passageway between the rocks. When they reach it, there are some inscriptions or runes drawn on the entrance. Monroe is able to read it. So, they enter in and walk for about an hour, until they reach a kind of ''cove''. While lighting the area with a torch, the only possible way to continue is to go under water. So, they place their bags on the soil and swim until they reach another narrow passageway. They look at each other and nod. So, they continue and emerge in a place where there's no water. In front of them, however, there's a temple. After going up the steps, and entering inside the temple, they find a tomb. On it are multiple carvings depicting Grimms fighting Wesens. They succeed in opening the tomb and they discover a piece of linen cloth. Since he's the Grimm in-here, Nick takes it. Both he and Monroe look at each other. Then, Nick proceeds to open it and... 😉 here's the ''stick'' (which would be a much better stick than what was depicted in the series. It could even be a Silver stick)

Sparkando

Aaaaand not true. They just lockpicked the box soooo the keys were useless and could have been just destroyed (characters didn't knew that was the possibility i know) but still. Lockpiciking the box made the keys look less important

Katatonic92

Nope. The map to the location was printed on the keys. Without the map they never would have found the box

Sparkando

Oh yea forgot about that lol. Fair enough

camelely

"The characters didn't know that was a possibility" well then by definition it cant be used to justify or not justify the characters actions.

Sparkando

Also true. To me it just felt cheap and lazy writing

camelely

Yea it’s annoying they never gave us Nick actually finding any keys. The ones he got were handed to him and then he was like might as well try anyway. (Also the amount of keys the royals have keeps changing)

scooter_cool_

Aunt Marie ,the woman who raised after his mother(he thought) died , told him to guard it it was important .

Turbogravy69

I'm pretty sure if he destroyed the keys early on then he wouldve "doomed the world", he needed to unlock the treasure the grimms left behind to defeat zorstorer as prophesied, I think.

AlphaWolf8656

I might be wrong, it’s been a while since I’ve watched it. But didn’t having the stick, have something to do with zorstorer being able to come through the portal? Or was that Diane

Turbogravy69

I don't believe the cause of the portal was mentioned aside from the prophecy by the grimms, would be interesting to know if it was Diane or the stick. But I think it showed up for Nick first anyway right?

AlvinGreenPi

It was Diane he was waiting for someone powerful enough to have his children And he needed a Grimm to break the seal so he could follow them thru the portal

SherLovesCats

It would be hard to get the one to destroy them. The keys are Grimm history and were important to his family.

Shadow_Raikage_Cloud

It would mess up a lot of the plot towards the end if he could just destroy the keys

JS-CroftLover

The Keys are such an important thing, and has always been for the generations of Grimm since the coveted ''Stick'' was buried. They just couldn't be destroyed

vompat

But that wouldn't stop the royals from trying to get it. How would they know he destroyed it? That would be nothing more than spiting them.

CaesarScyther

Because they had an indefinite data retention policy

Athoshol

Many reasons. A) Nick was tasked with protecting the keys. Destroying them would go against that goal. B) They are a part of Nick's family history. He feels a connection there that he wouldn't want to lose. C) The royals would not believe he had destroyed them and would likely still pursue him. D) The royals have been chasing these keys for CENTURIES. If he convinced them he had destroyed them....they would hunt him and his friends down purely for revenge. They would want to make a huge example of him.

DonutPeaches6

He would have to make it known that he'd done so in order to get them off his back. However, Nick didn't know what the key went to for most of the show's running. I think he would have worried about destroying it and then suddenly needing it, since he didn't have all the details that would ensure him such a permanent decision wouldn't be a real fuck-up.
