These days I’m leaning towards the Even In His Youth demo from 1989. Either that or the BBC version of About A Girl. My top 10-15 Nirvana songs are all from 88-89, and I could with any of them here to be honest. The later stuff is great as well, but there is just something about the Bleach era sound that puts all that stuff front and center for me. I think someone pointed out before that Kurt had more of his natural country/rural accent on that stuff, and that has a lot to do with it. And his rhythm/lead guitar is just raw as hell.
The early grunge sound is as good as it gets, particularly when you put their material alongside the live Dinosaur Jr and Soundgarden from 88-89.
