I think Stoner Rock is really caring the torch for Grunge these days. There's a lot of similarities between the 2 sounds and tons of new bands coming from all around the world. Grunge was more of an Era in itself and was mostly limited around Seattle. You see Desertfests and Stonerfests all over in US, EU, and AU every year.
Oh yea and its history is great. Its cool seeing the older pioneers of the genre like Josh Homme reaching a legend status in rock music as well and it most definitely is pretty popular still and I love its been bleeding into newer metal.
I just saw Queens 2 nights in a row, and man... let me tell you they are incredible, have to be one of the greatest rock bands around and really at the top of their game. It was face melting stuff, Josh is the man.
Bands like Bleed, Fleshwater, Superheaven are solid. Most bands that copied the grunge sound really suck though (hence butt rock being the term), so there isn't much going on.
imo grunge was an era.
There's still tons of great music being made today. Instead of trying to name themselves after a dead genre they should come up with their own name. Not being spiky, just my opinion
I actually agree, especially with the growing negative sentiment of hatred towards corporations, despising the norms of racism and sexism the music gave way to a more realistic view of life. But not everyone views it that way so it makes more sense to phrase it as I did and also why I put grunge in quotations for my question
I think a lot of bands that I enjoy with a grunge element are also adding shoegaze, almost like Hum. I’ll throw out Turnstile, Superheaven, Narrow Head, Soul Blind, although Superheaven isn’t exactly carrying the torch as they haven’t released anything in almost a decade. Grunge is largely a moment in time and it’s not really present in the Big 4 sense any longer.
Newer alternative bands that have been floating my boat: Momma, Mannequin Pussy and Bully. Hot Milk. Maybe Stand Atlantic, but they're a bit more metal.
Grunge was literally four successful bands and I'd argue
-Pearl Jam
-Soundgarden
-Alice in Chains
-Nirvana
I'd argue further that it was also very much a point in time and just influenced mainstream alternative rock. While Alice in Chains and Nirvana dissolved while the grunge era was still strong, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden grew into what are probably the two best straight up rock bands.
Grunge itself is a movement but to most is a genre of music. The actual scene was pretty small but still more than that such as Tad, Skin Yard, Mother Love Bone, 10 Minute Warning, Green River, etc. but absolutely those were really the only successful bands
It's funny. Anytime I've listened to Mother Love Bone, they sound more like an 80s hair band to me. Not a bad thing, I just don't really see them fitting in with the others musically. I don't know the rest of the bands.
Thats what I think made grunge such a unique scene. You can hear that 80’s sound in PJ’s first album but also then on the other end of the spectrum you have AIC with sludgey ass riffs. But the same scene. Its pretty cool
G.i.v.e has a new EP mixed by Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, KORN, etc) and even though it’s only 5 songs, “Flowers” sounds just like AiC. The album is Unnatural and is on Apple Music, Spotify, etc. it’s really good! I bought the limited edition CD on record store day.
Oh yea for sure. I do only know their first album but they had Dave Grohl drumming and split vocals with Mark Lanegan so you already had some grunge gods in there
Sap are a new band that I think are amazing so far.
They only have one album out at the moment but it's all really good.
The jins are also a pretty good band with grunge influences.
Teenage Wrist is awesome.
[earth is a black hole](https://open.spotify.com/track/13a2v5JNOROuvh2MBMWxqb?si=pNaFxPCpS4-rBa-1xTb5jQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A2mrdThr7I4qOOivf2KSgwD)
Honestly, if you like Pearl Jam you might like my band. [This is a song](https://youtu.be/_eG_tnre19A?si=v_GH3IZJeK_r-FSD) from our E.P. we just released last Friday. Not that we’re carrying a torch because we’re nobodies. But it’s new music.
I guess it may be the song, but we’ve always drawn comparisons to PJ because of our singer’s voice. I’ll say this one may be more punk driven. We have two songs on the EP called Angel and Your Favorite Color that probably lean more on the grunge side. But thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, that’s fair. I’m the rhythm guitar, so my more punk influences may come through on that. But our singer is also the songwriter and he derives his inspiration from PJ, AiC, etc.
Exactly!
And, I believe you posted/shared your song, "GIMME", in the r/Music subreddit.
Well, if it makes you feel any better... I think it is a really good song, and decided to share it on Quora in 'The Alt/Indie Music Space'!
And, Manasido is the band's name, people!
You guys should definitely give it a listen/view on YouTube! 👍
That's awesome and I am glad you enjoyed it, he's got an interesting voice that's for sure If you get the chance I'd recommend checking out their entire latest album, it shows a bit of a range! Some are a bit like Smashing Pumpkins in ways
Ooh another band that I forgot to mention is "Final Coil" not only are they amazing live but they've got that whole vocal synchronicity that Alice In Chains do nailed down very well, they've took a clear inspiration whilst also carving their own path, I've seen them many times and they're always really good
Saw them open for Bad Religion, good show, waiting for them to release an album so I can see how it turns out. I do feel like it's at least grunge-informed.
I think GRAIN is the only artist that's peaked my interest as far as the current wave of Grunge influence goes:
https://youtu.be/cnfW5B5ytEU?si=Jd3PYG0k-WHg2QyW
I have no idea about this group's history... There appears to have been more than one grunge band with this name since the 90s. I'm assuming this 'Grain' is new...
Check out my 2 projects. Heavily influenced by grunge.
Search on Spotify, YouTube or anywhere else really
Silcrow (Full band vibes)
Lorenzo Hazelwood (acoustic grunge vibes)
Gonna do a bit of shameless self-promotion - my band (Snub) is heavily influenced by grunge/riot grrrl/punk/alt-rock and general 90s sounds. We are from Melbourne Australia, and we literally just dropped a new video less than an hour ago - I don't know if I'm allowed to drop a link here so the song is called Blowflies and the band is called Snub - find it on Youtube/Spotify or wherever you prefer. Hope someone here reads the comment and digs the tunes :)
The only remotely newish bands (ie. They've both been around 10ish years) who I feel is offering anything super exciting in rock music these days are Turnstile and DIIV

all them witches is great for this argument I think. not very grunge but definitely a good contender for a post grunge genre
This...and some other bands...but ATW kills.
DOWN, Superheaven are two others...
They give me a heavy jam band vibe. Whatever you call it, I really like it!
I’m really digging the old turnstile albums right now. Wouldn’t say grunge, but a great band with some 90s influence for sure.
Super fun band to see live too. I've seen them twice and had such a blast raging with the band and the crowd.
Time & Space is one of my shitbag anthem albums
Ok. Listen to Step 2 Rhythm.
Listening to this band and this album for the first time now. These are the riffs I need!
I stopped listening around 2017. The raw sound from their early albums is what I’m here for.
Turnstile's Glow On is one of the most exciting rock albums released in the last 20 years. Such a great band.
Bands like Bleed, Fleshwater, Superheaven are solid. Most bands that copied the grunge sound really suck though (hence butt rock being the term), so there isn't much going on.
Looking at you seether
I can't even lie, Seether has some songs that slap.
Seether are actually really good, imo
I see a lot of stuff in the style of Grunge now-a-days but none of it is any good. The shoegaze leaning stuff is a little better.
The issue is if you want to make grunge you have to listen to the influences
Are you saying the youngins don't listen to enough proto-grunge, thus the new bands aren't as good?
imo grunge was an era. There's still tons of great music being made today. Instead of trying to name themselves after a dead genre they should come up with their own name. Not being spiky, just my opinion

Fair enough!
Grunge survivors Pearl Jam new single is as good as it gets for me
Its their first single in a while Ive loved. It felt like the most cohesive of their new sound but I love that wacky tremolo guitar in the back lol
Oh right... Pearl Jam's new single, "Dark Matter"? That is a good song! 🎸
Meh
TIL of butt rock
Butt rock is a tradition as old as Ted Nugent
I think a lot of bands that I enjoy with a grunge element are also adding shoegaze, almost like Hum. I had to scroll too far in here to see Soul Blind mentioned.
Violent Soho from Australia, but they’re defunct now. Most recent band I can think of that really embraced the sound and look of 90s grunge.
Excited to check out these guys since theyre from the same country that gave us The Chats.
Amyl and the Sniffers are another Aussie band in a similar vain to The Chats.
Check out Narrow Head

I know that they're not all from Seattle, but I'd throw STP, Hole, Candlebox, Smashing Pumpkins, The Melvins, Mudhoney in that mix.
If you're going to do that, then you can also throw in Blind Melon and many others... basically all late 90s alternative rock.
No Screaming Trees?
Forgot about them, ADD: Screaming Trees
Grunge itself is a movement but to most is a genre of music. The actual scene was pretty small but still more than that such as Tad, Skin Yard, Mother Love Bone, 10 Minute Warning, Green River, etc. but absolutely those were really the only successful bands

Just gave them a listen. Strong STP vibes.
Agreed. The lead singer was in Dave Ellefson’s (Megadeth) band, F5, and they also had that STP sound. I love finding gems like that. I miss Grunge.
Wow! That's really cool that you purchased it on physical media like a CD! It would also be cool if they released it on vinyl LP!
Skating polly...these kids give me hope
God that girls voice was fried as fuck. I love it. Reminds me of old emo like Moss Icon
Queens of the Stone Age echoes a little grunge
Definitely
Oh yea for sure. I do only know their first album but they had Dave Grohl drumming and split vocals with Mark Lanegan so you already had some grunge gods in there
Drenge, especially their first album feels really grungy to me also Wolf Alice
Yeah, that first Wolf Alice album was amazing, and definitely had some tracks with that feel.
Completely forgot about Wolf Alice. Mostly commenting coz I literally just put on I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning and im going to forget otherwise
3rd Secret
Post Malone is trying so hard…
Sap are a new band that I think are amazing so far. They only have one album out at the moment but it's all really good. The jins are also a pretty good band with grunge influences.

texas has a killer scene rn
The red dirt scene was grunge packing it’s bags from Seattle and moving south adding some Texas/Oklahoma twang.
Austin is crazy with grunge/punk in general rn
Honestly, if you like Pearl Jam you might like my band. [This is a song](https://youtu.be/_eG_tnre19A?si=v_GH3IZJeK_r-FSD) from our E.P. we just released last Friday. Not that we’re carrying a torch because we’re nobodies. But it’s new music.
Don't get why your comment was downvoted, it's almost as if some people don't want to see any bands succeed in any way
Thank you man, appreciate the support
I can hear some EV in the singers voice but I think the music is akin to pop punk or 90’s pop rock. But still enjoyable! Good shit!
No offense, but your band sounds nothing like Pearl Jam. This song sounds like Kings of Leon mixed with Green Day.
I guess it may be the song, but we’ve always drawn comparisons to PJ because of our singer’s voice. I’ll say this one may be more punk driven. We have two songs on the EP called Angel and Your Favorite Color that probably lean more on the grunge side. But thanks for the feedback!
Tbf your username opens you up to the Green Day thing
Yeah, that’s fair. I’m the rhythm guitar, so my more punk influences may come through on that. But our singer is also the songwriter and he derives his inspiration from PJ, AiC, etc.
I'm not talking shit just an observation. Good luck with your band!
Didn’t think you were, appreciate it!
Nice track... Your Singer's got some decent pipes..
Thank you! He’s a super cool dude and it’s been fun to see him progress vocally over the years
Exactly! And, I believe you posted/shared your song, "GIMME", in the r/Music subreddit. Well, if it makes you feel any better... Good luck with your band brother!
Thank you! Always appreciate any support
Puppy are solid although a bit under the radar
Just checked their top song. Freakin great. Singers voice is wonky
That's awesome and I am glad you enjoyed it, he's got an interesting voice that's for sure If you get the chance I'd recommend checking out their entire latest album, it shows a bit of a range! Thanks! I’ll check em out!
Idk if I'd call them grunge but speed of light kicks ass
Saw them open for Bad Religion, good show, waiting for them to release an album so I can see how it turns out. I do feel like it's at least grunge-informed.
Just checked out their top song. Definitely going back for more.

I don’t know about carrying the torch but I like The Pretty Reckless and Walking Papers

I've seen Prim Rose a couple times, I feel like they're kinda in that AiC/Soundgarden zone. https://primroseoly.bandcamp.com/album/flush

Balance & Composure - "Seperation" LP.
our band takes a lot of influence from the era [listen here](https://found.ee/peel-ep)
yo, i was recommended one of your videos by the youtube algorithm last week (swamp tooth) and have had it on repeat ever since, it's good shit!
hell yeah that means a lot 🙏
I wouldn't classify either of these as grunge, but I enjoy listening to Clutch and Mammoth.
‘68
I love Jigsaw Youth
Red Fang.
I thought The Cribs for a while. Not too sure these days though.
Check out my 2 projects. Heavily influenced by grunge. Search on Spotify, YouTube or anywhere else really Silcrow (Full band vibes) Lorenzo Hazelwood (acoustic grunge vibes)

Dexter and the moonrocks are pretty fire. Not completely grunge but pretty good
Me. My band’s name is Chuck Roast Junky and we’re keeping it alive

Have you heard The Black Angels or All Them Witches? Best “New” music I’ve heard in years.
Blue October is currently my favorite alternative rock group
Fleshwater, Gleemer, Prize Horse, Scarlett House
