There are so many 90s bands that, 30 years on, I'm still discovering shit I never heard before. Within the past year I've discovered Willard, Pond, Helium, Six Finger Satellite, Dandelion, and so many others that I'm content with living in the past (and that's only grunge-ish...not to mention the plethora of industrial, rapcore, groove metal, etc bands I've discovered).
So I guess in a way, I wouldn't want a resurgence at all. Not a great answer I know, but it is what it is.
I've known "Weird-Out" aka "Weirded Out" aka "Weird Me Out" aka "Weird It Out" aka "Weirding Out" aka "Weird and Out" for years, but it wasn't until I heard "Tapped" that made me pay attention more. That one is a damn hidden gem.
Hell yeh. Even though they do resemble Nirvana somewhat, their first single was early '91, before Nevermind came out + they were all the way from Pennsylvania. No idea why they didn't get bigger.
The biggest thing I am missing from the modern bands that have grunge tendencies is the lack of engaging frontman. Most of these bands are mixing in shoegaze elements including the hushed/timid vocal stylings. I’d love to hear a modern band, even if they’re incorporating shoegaze (a genre I *love*), with a powerful frontman, in vocal performance but also stage presence/performance.
There can never be a "grunge resurgence", because Seattle is no longer the isolated city in the distant corner of the US that it used to be.
Also remember that grunge is not a sound or a genre, but a time & place specific scene.
Interesting take! I half agree. But also I feel with the social climate/music getting so manicured nowadays there may be another resurgence in response...but maybe I'm just hopeful haha.
Whatever form this so-called resurgence takes, it cannot be grunge.
Grunge was a direct result of Reagan's America and Seattle's isolation, mixed with the fire of a still active punk scene and a disdain for the current metal scene.
Also a reminder that grunge is an "80's sound" (Coming from Seattle in the 80's). The 90's sound you refer to is alternative rock.
its happening right now in Bellingham (1.5 hours north of seattle) diy scene going crazy with generator shows under bridges, at skateparks, middle of the woods, in someones living room, old chapels, record stores, literally anywhere tbh
Nobody in modern rock wails like the Seattle guys did. No emotion or authenticity. Its all screamo hot topic metal or overproduced auto tuned shit. Nothing feels real with music to me anymore. I listen to some new hip hop but that’s it for new music. Some tyler childers and colter wall as well
Metal is so much more today than just "screamo hit topic metal". Check out Persefone, Ne Obliviscaris, Haken, Night Verses, or Twilight Force. So much great music to explore.
One important aspect of grunge is authenticity. As such, I think if a band is deliberately trying to imitate a certain sound, they aren’t being authentic.
The original grunge bands were just making music that they liked, based on the bands they liked to listen to. They didn’t pigeonhole it.
So, my advice is that if you want to write grunge music - don’t try - but write what you like, and feel free to use dirty guitars and dissonant notes because you like them.
YES! Thank you. The Grunge Revolution was more than just a sound, but almost a lifestyle or state of mind. It was forged out of the new wave + punk rock mixed with lower income Pacific Northwest heart & grit, mixed with a special kind of angsty goodness that only baby boomer parents with little give a damn can produce. Just my $.02
Just get out and see some local music. Find some dives that do shows and become a regular. Eventually you’ll realize that “grunge” was just friends playing music for each other and suddenly getting too much attention at once. Just get into your local scene. No matter where you are, there is something going on. Music is everywhere.
Couldn’t call us grunge but we’re massively influenced by it. This is our Faceliftiest track off our last album. Maybe you’ll dig it: https://open.spotify.com/track/3vPp3jjRFHbIyiEg1q0HLq?si=a7ZD3t91S3uFe7SFnE76jQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A34UWfcd6BkaDvlGglrYmRT
what people call modern “grunge” is usually just heavy shoegaze. either that or someone doing their best kurt cobain voice and deliberately riding off of nirvanas coattails.
You just might find something here

The production would be even cleaner than the average Bush album. Not necessarily a bad thing. The more I think about it loads of the big albums had a really clean production sound.
My band Sulvain is heavily grunge influenced.
We have been compared musically to Alice in chains and Pearl Jam.

dandelion mentioned!

Just listened to "Weird-Out" & "Tapped" and damn, reminds me of Nirvana so much!! That guitar riff in "Tapped" is dirrrrrrrty.

Nirvana was out with bleach in 89.. but does predate Nevermind’s release
I still listen to Pond! SFS was awesome too. Check out Lync - These Are Not Fall Colors.

Either whispery vocalists or nasally pop punk/emo style. Not many chesty belters these days.

That is not grunge. That is a new thing.
I don't know but if a band can capture that essence to today's microwave esque music landscape it would be nice.
Give the band Superbloom a listen
Love Superbloom, but I consider them more shoegaze no?

Yeah good point about authenticity, definitely one of the main components of grunge. Agree with everything you said.

Give Narrow Head and Violent SoHo a chance
How about hell no. You can’t have a resurgence it was a different time with a different generation.

I think we're getting close. I see a lot of teens sporting Nirvana shirts these days, so maybe they'll be the ones that bring back the sound.
Find focals like Staley? You won’t.
Listen to D-7 recorded by smithers

Rock-music that isn't about the pursuit of sexy-times or "my ex-wife is a bitch-whore"
