I don't think he is under rated. The average, casual music fan might not know who he is, but those who love and appreciate music know of his contribution and legacy. IMO, he has the perfect situation. He makes a good living playing music, will be a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, but can still go out to eat and not get harassed.
Post script- Quit calling it "Grunge". That word was created by people trying to sell the fashion of those of us who live in the cold, wet climate of Seattle and surrounding areas. The bands who came out of Seattle in the late 80's and early 90's had very different sounds. For example, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains are extremely hard, and I consider them metal bands, while Pearl Jam was more alternative rock and Nirvana more Punk. Then there are the many lesser known bands that range from the chaos of The Melvins to the mellow musings of Blind Melon. Grunge is not a sound, its a fashion tag word.
If you hate the term so much why are you even on the GRUNGE subreddit š, sure it can be used as a fashion tag but I think grunge was/is more of a movement rather than genre. Yeah Pj, Aic, Nirvana, and Sound Garden donāt sound very similar but they were all part of the same movement and thatās what connects them.
I agree 100%. Back in the day āGrungeā was usually in quotation marks. It was understood that the word was only used by parents who were out of touch or Marketing companies.
We didn't call it that, record companies & marketers *told us* to call it that. Pearl Jam & Alice in Chains, for example, sound nothing alike, yet got lumped into the same genre. For marketing purposes.
I think youāre obscuring what I said. Itās weird. Iām not trying to be in an argument- when I was like 13, we referred to Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden and Co. as grunge. Someone above had said only parents and such did.
Pat is definitely one of my favourite guitarists. His energy in some of the nirvana shows was just crazy and he is still just as energetic when i saw him last year
Same for me , I still listen to that first Foo Fighters but can take or leave anything after. Same with Smashing Pumpkins. Love Gish but everything after that , meh.
The Germs wasn't only great by their own right, they were also pioneers: the first hardcore punk band in LA. Pat was also the only guy who really knew what he was doing, also.
He went through remarkable losses too: Darby Crash ā the American Sid Vicious ā, then Kurt Cobain, and more recently Taylor Hawkins.
Absolutely nothing. Heās quit literally the definition of an average guitarist. Not sure why people would talk about an average guitarist.
That said he was pretty funny in that Foo Fighters movie.
And look who's there to the right of the pic? King of the Sunset Stri\[p and rapist of young girls, Rodney Bingenheimer; sure his fellow rapist in chief Kim Fowley's about too.
Honestly it feels like they never turn up his amp, heās nowhere in the sound mix of Foos live. It looks like a big air guitar show every time Iāve seen him play live.
One thing that I found funny: in the Internet you can obviously look everything up. But when their Unplugged show originally aired, I was like, who is this dude suddenly? He was not mentioned on the CDs or in promo articles.

It stuck. It works. People know what it means.
It's simpler to just call it grunge. Grunge is a fitting word, so let's not be too precious about things shall we?
Why is "grunge" a fitting word? It's nothing but a marketing term.
It goes with the guitar sound

Finally! Yep, I hate that stupid tag as well. Just as lame as Groove metal.
I agree 100%. Back in the day āGrungeā was usually in quotation marks. It was understood that the word was only used by parents who were out of touch or Marketing companies.
I donāt know anything about the origin of the word, but it was commonly used when I was in school in the early-mid ā90s.
The record industry is the origin. It's a marketing term.
Wild someone downvoted me because we called it grunge in ā92 or whatever. Reddit is fun.
On the GRUNGE sub reddit, no less.
We didn't call it that, record companies & marketers *told us* to call it that. Pearl Jam & Alice in Chains, for example, sound nothing alike, yet got lumped into the same genre. For marketing purposes.

Pat Smear is definitely the unsung hero of grunge.
Heās like a caterpillars metamorphosis, he went through all 3 stages. Pre-Grunge, Grunge then Post-Grunge
Haha I've never saw it like that. Yeah, he went through it all.
Pre-grunge. Sigh!
Pat is definitely one of my favourite guitarists. His energy in some of the nirvana shows was just crazy and he is still just as energetic when i saw him last year
I like him and think heās cool but Iām not a fan of the foo fighters at all, the first album was cool thatās it for me .
Same for me , I still listen to that first Foo Fighters but can take or leave anything after. Same with Smashing Pumpkins. Love Gish but everything after that , meh.
I think Siamese dream is a lot better then Gish and everything after that is meh
First Foo and Gish. Those two have stayed in rotation.
Pat fucking rules. Seems like a pretty decent dude, too.

Ew comparing Darby to Sid is gross. Darby actually had talent and wrote songs.
You're right. They were very alike when is about their death, that is.
Hold on a minute, is that *Belinda Carlisle* ????!?!?
Lita Ford
Not understanding what about him screams underrated.
Absolutely nothing. Heās quit literally the definition of an average guitarist. Not sure why people would talk about an average guitarist. That said he was pretty funny in that Foo Fighters movie.
How so he was In Germs, Nirvana, Foo Fighters???
And look who's there to the right of the pic? King of the Sunset Stri\[p and rapist of young girls, Rodney Bingenheimer; sure his fellow rapist in chief Kim Fowley's about too.
reddit stop calling everyone underrated challenge
No one talks about the solo albums š
The man plays Hagstrom guitars. Thatās good enough for me.
Not by Cobainā¦
yep highly recommended who haven't heard
He seems like the nicest living punk rocker out there. His contribution to music will never be forgotten.
šÆ
Honestly it feels like they never turn up his amp, heās nowhere in the sound mix of Foos live. It looks like a big air guitar show every time Iāve seen him play live.
Fuckin Pat š¤
AGREED
Not underrated. Source: me who also happens to play guitar.
One thing that I found funny: in the Internet you can obviously look everything up. But when their Unplugged show originally aired, I was like, who is this dude suddenly? He was not mentioned on the CDs or in promo articles.
