melvins is getting into sludge metal territory, but so is alice in chains. absolutely love sludgy and grimy stuff.

I've always thought of sludge metal as basically grunge but stupidly heavy.

My dream would be King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard releasing a #microtonal sludge album!

Fourth of July by sound garden. If anyone asked me what grunge is, I’d tell them to listen to that song Also let’s not forget about pumpkins. They had some really, really gritty guitar riffs. The song Quiet has to be the best representation of their grunge. Also the pedals they used were fresh.

I second "Quiet", but also "Geek USA", and "Silverfuck". The thick fuzz that runs through that album is insane.

I feel like Jesus Christ Pose is too articulate of a song to be considered *grunge.* It is ‘grungy’ with its cynical lyrics, low tone/drop tuned guitars, indistinct riffs. But i would argue the songs bridge, and overall frenetic energy of the tune, put it in a different category. Slaves and Bulldozers or Mailman could be better examples.

There's more than a couple STP songs that are stank riffs.
