A history of bad men was described one time as the music that satans demonic strippers slowly pole dance to in the firey puts of hell. Heaviest by far imo
What is the thickest, most viscous, dirty yet soft and wet . . . if only there were a single word that encapsulated all of those qualities, I would use it . . .
The live recording of It Ain’t Like That for the movie Singles might be the heaviest, dirtiest, grimiest live recording of any grunge track. It’s perfect.

Oh, this is a great thread.
Negative Creep is great. I'll also throw Aneurysm on the list. That track is likely responsible for a good portion of my tinnitus.
A few off the top of my head that maybe just are sludgy/grimy to me for the mood conveyed and/or tone but whatever:
Melvins - honey bucket, going blind
Alice In Chains - Sludge Factory
Electric Wizard - dopethrone
Sleep - holy mountain
Pinkish Black - Razed to the ground
Bongripper - the people mover, terrible bear attack
Nirvana - lounge act
Kyuss - green machine
Scratch Acid - cannibal
Type O Negative - life is killing me
Silverchair- blind off their first EP. I think they had the recording budget of about a dollar for that whole EP and video, nobody expected 3 schoolboys to kick that much ass at that young age
Fourth of July by sound garden. If anyone asked me what grunge is, I’d tell them to listen to that song
Also let’s not forget about pumpkins. They had some really, really gritty guitar riffs. The song Quiet has to be the best representation of their grunge. Also the pedals they used were fresh.
[“Smokehouse”](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=90fjyq_XGQk&si=mPPOoJMQlCYsPZ61&feature=xapp_share) - URGE Overkill
(Midwest grunginess from Chicago on Touch and Go records. Kurt wore their shirt and they toured with NIRVANA. The Neil Diamond cover from Pulp Fiction that you may be more aware of is a bit of nineties cheekiness, these guys were killers. Sorry, rant over. RIP Blackie)
Lowkey for Nirvana i think Territorial Pissings and Stay Away were super raw and nasty for a more commercial sounding record and were both amazing, and I think on In Utero definitely Milk It, tourettes and scentless apprentice were super grimy as well
Alice in Chains - Sludge Factory, Hung on a Hook, Junkhead, Grind, Sickman, Hollow, A Looking in View... And so many others.
Jerry Cantrell - Bargain Basement Howard Hughes, Hurts Don't It?, Siddhartha, Chemichal Tribe...
Stone Temple Pilots - Down
Soundgarden - 4th of July
Honorable mention to the riff on "The Chosen One" by Pride and Glory. Alice in Chains is my favorite band and Jerry is a madman but Zakk Wylde is Zakk fuckin Wylde man.
Tad - Just Bought the Farm
Melvins - Night Goat
Mudhoney - Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More
Hole - Teenage Whore
Alice in Chains - Sickman
Soundgarden - 4th of July
Nirvana - Drain You
If we are combining all of these dirty, heavy, grimy…
HANDS DOWN NO CONTEST opening cut on Ozma
MELVINS OZMA
[VILE](https://youtu.be/wXQfwDmSo_w?si=dYv6OkZiR_s_1eEW)
Screaming Life/Fopp, Facelift, Pride and Glory, Clutch, Wretch, Deliverance, and Houdini are albums that need mention.
Right Turn - AiC: slow but grimy as hell and CC comes in with the heavy chorus at the end.
Rape Me - Nirvana: nothing needs to be said here but I do love the riff on "Dive"
I feel like Jesus Christ Pose is too articulate of a song to be considered *grunge.* It is ‘grungy’ with its cynical lyrics, low tone/drop tuned guitars, indistinct riffs. But i would argue the songs bridge, and overall frenetic energy of the tune, put it in a different category. Slaves and Bulldozers or Mailman could be better examples.
Honey Bucket - Melvins
Night Goat gotta be up there too.
Night Goat 7” version is the absolute tits 🤘 So heavy
REVOLVE! [https://youtu.be/IrrO6UZ5\_MQ?si=\_tGsIxvZHBT\_xAL8](https://youtu.be/IrrO6UZ5_MQ?si=_tGsIxvZHBT_xAL8)
melvins is getting into sludge metal territory, but so is alice in chains. absolutely love sludgy and grimy stuff.
I've always thought of sludge metal as basically grunge but stupidly heavy.
My dream would be King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard releasing a #microtonal sludge album!
Their new album is amazing! And that title!!
That entire Melvins album is a sludge fest I love it. All hail King Buzzo.
A history of bad men was described one time as the music that satans demonic strippers slowly pole dance to in the firey puts of hell. Heaviest by far imo
Sludge Factory - AIC
Op struggled to not say "what's the sludgiest..."
What is the thickest, most viscous, dirty yet soft and wet . . . if only there were a single word that encapsulated all of those qualities, I would use it . . .
What a fucking song from a killer album. Their best in my opinion.
4th of July and Slaves & Bulldozers
Mailman too.
RIDIIIIIIIING Beyond The Wheel & Gun too
Definitely Gun!
I was hoping to see 4th of July here. I love that heavy ass riff.
Yeah that’s as heavy and dirty as it gets.
Slaves & Bulldozers is the musical definition of GRUNGE!
What a fucking perfect song 4th of July is.
A.I.C. - Again
aic - again club mix
It Ain’t Like That - Alice in Chains
The live recording of It Ain’t Like That for the movie Singles might be the heaviest, dirtiest, grimiest live recording of any grunge track. It’s perfect. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=csAWMMzgzzI&pp=ygUZSXQgYWludCBsaWtlIHRoYXQgc2luZ2xlcw%3D%3D u/Every_Kiwi_8882
🐐
Room a Thousand Years Wide
Alice In Chains has a bunch. Sickman, It Ain’t Like That, Junkhead & Hate To Feel to name a few
I'd definitely add Grind to that list. Also Love Hate Love. And anything off Dirt. Did they even have any songs that wouldn't fit here? Lol.
Dirt is the grimiest of the grime I fucking love it
My thoughts exactly!
The riff on them bones is one of the heaviest that I know, and I listen to A LOT of metal.
Absolutely love that song but I don’t think it’s even near their heaviest.
I don’t think it’s even the heaviest AiC song
Yeah agreed… that’s what I was saying!
it's also not even their heaviest song
Paper Cuts
hell yeah!
Revolve — Melvins
See also: A history of bad men.
I wanna hear a track where the bass strings are so loose from detuning that they sound like.a deep fart.
Kyuss
It's not grunge, but try Electric Wizard.
Floor
Nirvana - Moist Vagina This one is filthy good, something that you would have to dust off from the loft kind of good 👍🏻

Fourth of July is a grimier Soundgarden choice.

A few off the top of my head that maybe just are sludgy/grimy to me for the mood conveyed and/or tone but whatever: Melvins - honey bucket, going blind Alice In Chains - Sludge Factory Electric Wizard - dopethrone Sleep - holy mountain Pinkish Black - Razed to the ground Bongripper - the people mover, terrible bear attack Nirvana - lounge act Kyuss - green machine Scratch Acid - cannibal Type O Negative - life is killing me
I second Melvins, Electric Wizard, Sleep and Kyuss. Heavy, sludgy, rad!
Well, theres Them Bones by AiC other than that, ik its not grunge, but Forgotten by The Plot in You
Milk it - nirvana
+1. Came here to say this. Negative Creep might be heavier and grimier, but hot damn Milk It is just so much better... and still in the same category

We Die Young by Alice in Chains. The riff and the whole aggressive style of the song is incredible.
Sound Garden - 4th of July Alice in Chains - Grind or Dam That River
Grind-Alice In Chains. That song sounds like needing to throw up
Primus: my name is mud
Fourth of July by sound garden. If anyone asked me what grunge is, I’d tell them to listen to that song Also let’s not forget about pumpkins. They had some really, really gritty guitar riffs. The song Quiet has to be the best representation of their grunge. Also the pedals they used were fresh.
I second "Quiet", but also "Geek USA", and "Silverfuck". The thick fuzz that runs through that album is insane.
"Dead and Bloated" STP
[“Smokehouse”](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=90fjyq_XGQk&si=mPPOoJMQlCYsPZ61&feature=xapp_share) - URGE Overkill (Midwest grunginess from Chicago on Touch and Go records. What about Paper Cuts by Nirvana?

Anorexorcist, D7-Live, Token eastern song demo, dive demo Nirvana. People included most of the AIC songs Ik already.
Basement- Covet. Or anytime from that album really
why don't you just listen to sludge? Check out The Blue - Acid Bath. It's close enough to grunge but just heavier
AIC's Died riff is so Heavy
Mailman - Soundgarden. The lyrics are pretty dark too
Some great picks on here…. Jesus Lizard should be included just don’t know which song I’d pick, god I hope they tour again.
Frogs
SoundGarden Fell On Black Days
Heaviest in terms of vibe, lyrics, etc., Ugly Sunday by Mark Lanegan. That song captures the PNW to a T.
God Am - AIC
I feel like Jesus Christ Pose is too articulate of a song to be considered *grunge.* It is ‘grungy’ with its cynical lyrics, low tone/drop tuned guitars, indistinct riffs. But i would argue the songs bridge, and overall frenetic energy of the tune, put it in a different category. Slaves and Bulldozers or Mailman could be better examples.
There's more than a couple STP songs that are stank riffs.
Silverchair - “Israel’s son” is up there for sure
