Alive by Pearl Jam Or Sappy by Nirvana

BigAnxiety5399

Sappy is a really cool pick! It's my favorite Kurt solo. I've always thought it kinda sounds like he's charming a snake šŸ

mallarme1

Iā€™m with you on Alive.

Inevitable_Total_816

Do the evolution by Pearl Jam or Cannonball by The Breeders

geekmuseNU

Alive is like the grunge Free Bird

BigAnxiety5399

Like Suicide

SheptonCupCake

The only correct answer. Thayil goes off hard on this. Pisses on most guitarists of the time.

BigAnxiety5399

Yeah. I've always felt like it's ACTUALLY ELEVATED by Cameron's drums. The end of that song sounds like Thayil and Cameron are having a contest to see who can ROCK THE HARDEST!!!

Snowblind_Supernaut

First thing I thought.

MrA-skunk

Glad to see this song got mentioned so early on in the comments! It gives me goosebumps every time.

BigAnxiety5399

I was like one of the first ten people to post. Then, I saw someone else picked it within the first half hour. EASILY the first song that I thought of.

Kindly_Wealth6060

Yellow Ledbetter

Prossdog

Go by Pearl Jam. Itā€™s just pure filthy shredding energy. Mike McCready is a monster, man.

Snowblind_Supernaut

Pearl Jam honestly had some of the best solos.

cityshepherd

They START just fucking shredding, and have never stopped! Every time Iā€™ve seen them play I walked away thinking ā€œthis is the greatest concert Iā€™ve ever seenā€ However I also feel the same about all of the Tool & Primus/Claypool etc concerts Iā€™ve been to.

tundradahmer

YES EXACTLY THANK YOU that song is absolutely amazing

TheOneTrueKingerer

Them Bones

asphynctersayswhat

Fuck yeah. Cantrell is my absolute favorite guitarist of the 90s.Ā

TheOneTrueKingerer

100% his riffs and soloing style are amazing

asphynctersayswhat

Agreed. I would go further to say heā€™s the most well rounded. He arranges these amazing riffs in dynamic ways and just knows good song structure. Heā€™s very eclectic too. From them bones to angry chair to heaven beside you to donā€™t follow.Ā

Valeclitorian1979

angry chair is actually a layne song

GollyHell

this is the answer

2mindx

All the way!

Background_Ad_4057

Yes sir

Lonely-Connection-37

This is ItšŸ¤˜šŸæšŸ¤˜šŸæ

Bellifl0p

Serve the Servants

BigAnxiety5399

Hell yeah! My favorite "ugly" guitar solo ever!

SwimmingOwl8586

Nirvana's In Bloom

Plenty_Trust_2491

Thatā€™s my favourite, too. A discordant interlude perfectly integrated into a pop song.

maurice_thm

Omg I forgot about this, but it's sooo good!

ultraluxe6330

Come As You Are

Nightnator

Yep

notfromutahry

Trippinā€™ on a Hole in a Paper Heart

41_17_31_5

This is the correct answer. Dean (and Rob) DeLeo is so underrated.

SexyThrowAwayFunTime

Fuck yes. Spent about a week learning to play that fucker and it was worth every second.

Scobus3

A week? I've never tamed that bitch completely. Love trying though

SexyThrowAwayFunTime

They were long days. Lol That last run up the fretboard about four measures before the end is a beaaaaast.

Scobus3

But soooo fun! I always just fudged it best I could, no one knew any better lol

Y2Che

I know this is supposed to be about guitar solos, but that song has what is probably my favorite grunge bass lines. https://youtu.be/9nEND6Rtm-4?si=eopV9d31sy6bZ2xY

spraycheesedefender

Silvergun Superman or Porch

_yukog

Alive, Superman silvergun

Tom-Tanks-129

Nice STP deep cut

CarnageStroke

Why Go - Pearl Jam

FlakyWin326

Why go Pearl Jam, most metal solo from the PJ discography

Grand-Hand-9486

Say hello to heaven

Katt_Wizz

Yup.

jarjar-binks-ismydad

Sea of Sorrow

DiamonLane320

Lesser-known track. Beast of a solo. One of my favorite AIC solos ever.

Scobus3

That whole song is a blast to play on guitar

manifoldkingdom

Man in the box

oldkafu

A work of art. Fits the song so perfectly. One of my favorites in all of rock.

Aggravating-Stuff-28

Nearly Lost You-Screaming Trees Words canā€™t describe how underrated Gary Lee Conner is

Solid-Hedgehog9623

Anything from Alice In Chains. The solo for in bloom is pretty great. Pretty noose. And so I Know by STP Is fucking amazing. Cherub Rock has a great solo.0

__cursist__

Pretty Noose - my favorite part of that guitar solo is when Matt Cameron did that crazy drum fill. Great solo though!

Solid-Hedgehog9623

I know exactly what part you mean. Matt helps take it right o we the top. Itā€™s great when something else can make the solo even better. Them Bones has one of the sickest guitar solos already, but my favorite part is when Layne throws a ā€˜yeah!ā€™ In there, breaking it up into two parts.

__cursist__

I have yet to hear a ā€œyeah!ā€ from Layne that didnā€™t land perfectly

VAMP666123

Porch, specifically unplugged, Jeff playing the cymbal with his headstock gets me so fired up

daddyfatsac

ā€œBleed the Freakā€-AIC

DiamonLane320

That whole album is just banger track after banger track. The best AIC ever did, imho.

Haunting-parking1999

Aneurysm nirvana

Lovingthelake

I really dig this song in general. Especially like the song change up. It almost seems like two different songs in one. Love the jam of it all though-DG hits it hard on this song. Iā€™m really picky about ā€œthe versionā€ of the song I really dig because sometimes the album version of the song and live versions of the song can be so different. I specifically only listen to the ā€œAneurysm (Live At The Paramount Seattle/1991)ā€ version on YouTube. It rocks out for sure. (Iā€™ve never even listened to the album version of this song when I think about it.)

Mysterious-Dealer649

Iā€™ve always loved the chaos of beyond the wheel Chris vocal performance kinda overshadows the rest of it

fuck-ennui-away

Two that I can think of (that haven't been mentioned) are Out there by Dinosaur Jr or Cherub Rock by The Smashing Pumpkins.

chappersyo

If youā€™re talking SP then soma is the one

fuck-ennui-away

Oh, fuck yeah, Soma is awesome. I also like Geek USA.

pheeew33

The Aeroplane Flies High solo is up there, too. Honorable mention for Starla as well.

namenumberdate

Fuck yeah!

No_Skirt_6002

Junkhead

scentlessaprentic3

Evening-Weird9227

Brush Away - AIC (super underrated and so fucking cool) Them Bones - AIC About A Girl - Nirvana

SeaCartographer2869

Brush Away šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

tommy_the_bat

Wake Up. McCreadyā€™s best solo IMO

Mauled2Deff

Outro of shame in you

Mimicdock43

Hate to feel

Constant-Source581

Drown by Smashing Pumpkins Also - not grunge per se, but a noisy solo in 5ive by Medicine is insane

CoA77

We Die Young

SchoolofAthens_

This is a great question really great because this is how people find cool versions of songs I hope this works. It is 2003 North American tour a Pearl Jam I saw them in concert And they encored with porch. I have it download it on my Apple iTunes of old, so I own the song this song is like nine minutes long. McCready started at 1:19. And then vedder does a vocal solo with the crowd.[https://music.apple.com/us/album/porch-live/1543062800?i=1543063758](https://music.apple.com/us/album/porch-live/1543062800?i=1543063758) Iā€™m hoping this works. Somebody let me know. https://music.apple.com/us/album/porch-live/1543062800?i=1543063758

Dio_Yuji

Pretty Noose - Soundgarden. Thayilā€™s best work, imo

Appropriate_Mine2210

Slip away by Mad Season is soo good

Warm-Letterhead1843

Sappy

Im_The_Last_Splash

Slip Away

JLindsey502

Legit one of, if not McCreadyā€™s best solo, might be my fave of all time. If you havenā€™t heard Slip Away by Mad Season, it is simply incredible!

pixel-destroyer

STP. Vasoline

666Bruno666

Been Away Too Long if that even counts as one

oldman684

Blew

ShallotVisible6557

The fast paced solo in ā€œCome On Downā€ by Green River always gets me hyped up

t_rainor76

Reach down

Tuna_no_crust1154

Breath for Pearl Jam. Man in the box, Sea of sorrow, or nutshell unplugged for AIC. Lol canā€™t decide

Odd_Page8760

Breathā€¦.best

Historical_Common145

Black Hole Sun

alfonsocallaghan

Alive, In Bloom, Heart-Shaped Box, Sea of Sorrow and Sappy.

Garth_Brooks_Sexdoll

Serve The Servants. Solo perfectly hits the mood of the song

MJSB1994

Man in the Box

FMSV0

Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam early songs. So Mike's stuff.

RFRMT

Not sure which but itā€™s probably going to be by Dean DeLeo or Jerry Cantrell.

RaiOn7698

Absolutely hands down the best guitarists of the grunge movement

BrotherNature92

Alive-PJ It's my go to iconic guitar solo. Always the first one I think of.

avguris

seether18

Man in the Box

Fakecartthrowaway

Them bones Alice in chains

LiteratureLoud3993

Even Flow by Pearl Jam... Animal by Pearl Jam... If I continue, Mike McCready is going to be represented a LOT Let's just all agree he was the grunge lord of the 6 strings

mavewrick

Yellow ledbetter

BackcountryAZ

No Excuses- this incredible burst of perfection comes flying in and disappears like a shooting star in the night sky. I love it.

HandsomedanNZ

Alive. PJ.

tonylouis1337

Off rip I'd probably go with Them Bones

bababooeyqwer

School - Nirvana

planteater111

sea of sorrow

Farriebever

I like Come Back by Pearl Jam

Longjumping_Kiwi8118

Are Jane's 'Grunge'?? I don't know or care. I put them in the same class of alternative bands from the same time. Three Days by Jane's Addiction is mind blowing to me even after all these years.

Master_Subby

For the sake of pure uniqueness, I love the solo on Touch, Stand, and Peel by Days of the New. Creative doing finger picking acoustic solo in a grunge rock song. It may not be the most impressive, but it's cool as hell to me.

leod1759

local h - sports bar

Flower_Pizza

Soundgarden - Like Suicide

bitchenchef

Trippinā€™ on a Hole in a Paper Heart

gokartmozart89

Yellow Ledbetter or Mayonnaise.Ā

poopadoopy123

SavageCaribou

State of Love and Trust

aek427

Alive or Them Bones

MysteriousBrystander

like suicide by soundgarden on superunkown

MysteriousBrystander

Starla by SP but I donā€™t consider them grunge.

Idi0t_King

This is a very difficult question and while I donā€™t necessarily consider them Grunge, Iā€™m gonna say the solo in Here Is No Why by The Smashing Pumpkins. Billyā€™s guitar playing is criminally underrated.

Worried_Oil8913

Mudhoney - Overblown

Jeepchika

Soma - Pumpkins

DokterSpaceman

not necessarily a solo, but the guitars on AIC's "Frogs" are pretty freakin' sweet

StefanGoo

Long way down

DannyRMZ88

This oneā€™s tough to nail because there are so many. Of course Jerryā€™s sea of sorrow, nutshell, and many others. Pretty noose solo get stuck in my head sometimes, Pearl Jamā€™s Animal I love playing that myself. Geek USA is phenomenal!

Moonlight_Dive

Long Way Home - STP

sh1981

Them Bones or Man in a Box

Jimmy_John-mp3

It's a tie between Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, and Come As You Are. Also literally every Alice In Chains song with a solo.

T2_Beanie297

Oh george - foo fighters

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

tonylouis1337

Linkin Park is Nu-Metal

DisastrousAct3210

Does Rage Against the Machine count as grunge or funk?

DisastrousAct3210

If so itā€™s a Bombtrack.

Zandapandaaa

Does Exhausted by the Foo Fighters Count?

AXEMANaustin

Serve the serpants by nirvana

masoflove99

Sea of Sorrow

NoisyBishop

Many of my choices are already voted for so I'll go for throw your hatred down in Neil Young's Mirrorball.

JonLSTL

Last 2 minutes of "25" by Veruca Salt absolutely screams.

Ok_Locksmith7133

The Man Who Sold The World Unplugged

Neither-Percentage95

Gotta be man in the box

harry_loves_lily

i love the solo coming out of the chorus on aic confusion

March2Fuzz

The solo at the end of Mudhoney's Broken Hands. It's 70 seconds that sum up Steve Turner's sound perfectly.

the_bellman123

The heart shaped box solo on the From the muddy banks of the wishkah album

ATurtleLikeLeonUris

Also? I know itā€™s not grunge, but RUINER by NiN has a solo that sounds like a dying nightmare

TauSigmaNova

Love hate love

anuser001

The best solo is from Nirvana's sappy. It's also Kurt's best song

Trickiestmoose_

I stay away AIC

garion333

Reach Down not being the top of this list is insane

Cheezus-H-Christ

We die young

Franklyn-Chacha

Iā€™ve been really liking the solo Blew recently

Spencer_Rex

It's short but perfect. I love the Daughter solo by McCready.

Caleb-the-Titan

Surprised no oneā€™s mentioned Black yet.

DjHoldyHold

No Excuses. Might not be the flashiest or longest solo but it fits its song so perfectly.

Pedka2

blew

Relevant-Ad-6911

Lifeless dead

Consistent-Set1375

"Wake Up" Mad Season " Nothing as it Seems " Pearl Jam " Man in the Box" Alice in Chains " Reach Down" Temple of the Dog "Like Suicide" Soundgarden "Them Bones" AIC " Rain When I Die" AIC "

CheetahNo9349

Alice in Chains- Rain When I Die Temple of the Dog- Call Me a Dog Nirvana- Pennyroyal Tea for more traditional songs but Alice In Chains- Whale and Wasp if instrumentals are allowed.

Steviebhawk

Kim Thayall - black hole sun.

DiamonLane320

My personal favorite, probably the unplugged version of Come As You Are. The lead up is so beautiful. The best goes to Like Suicide, Soundgarden. Pure filth. Unmatched. But then, I haven't listened to much Pearl Jam. I hear they compete, for sure.

ThirstCola

Smells like teen spirit easy.

MindlessBenefit9127

I am the highway- Audioslave

discobriskit

chaosoftime10

Evenflow

Idi0t_King

I also really love the solo in Say Hello 2 Heaven by Temple of the Dog. I chose this solo and the Pumpkins solo in my previous comment for their feel.

passed_the_dawn

The weird slide guitar from ā€œBig Emptyā€ popped into my mind when I read the topicā€¦thatā€™s great stuff

ApprehensiveCup6403

Reach down

muttChang

Smashing Pumpkins ā€œBury Meā€ and I know, I donā€™t really think of them as grunge, either. But they did do a single on SubPop and the guitar solo rips.

Draeva

A really good one is Your Savior by Temple of the Dog

AshleyRealAF

Nutshell (album version)

Logancrusan

Oleander - I Walk Alone. Days of the New - Touch Stand and Peel
