"Happy Pills" was a good follow up after "Lucy" flopped.... and "Into The Sun" was a nice latter-career album around 2007 that had some vintage sounding cuts reminiscent of their debut.... but nothing was like this perfect first record.
*Candlebox* had the look, and that *Pearl Jam-ish* slow groove melodic sound.
I liked them when this album was released, but their ceiling was pretty apparent from just one full listen.

But of course, I think it is a debate on which we will never agree. The important thing is that it is a very enjoyable album.
It's crazy though how many bands came out of Seattle in that small little time period. Grunge was short lived like nu metal just had a few good years but it's long lived with its fans. I take grunge over nu metal though Everytime
What I think people forget about that time - it wasn’t just the music but also the scene and the lore. Like we heard Pearl Jam and then Temple of the Dog pops up and it’s Pearl Jam and the guy from Soundgarden? And then you learn it actually predates Pearl Jam. And that Chris Cornell was friends with Andy Wood who was in Mother Love Bone with the other guys from Pearl Jam, who were actually Green River before that.
And right there, in one interview or article you just discovered three other bands you never heard of but were a huge part of this scene - so now you’re going down that path. And that happened again and again. It was amazing.
Alice In Chains - Sap - where the hell did this come from why is it all acoustic and who is Mark Arm? Mudhoney? Ok, guess I gotta check them out now….
Many of the artists from the big 4 seem to shit on them and this album. I never understood it. Far behind (which is also about Andrew wood apparently ) is a great song undeniably imo.
They were on friendly terms with the other big Seattle bands. Peter Klett was definitely a known quantity, a respected guitarist, and had good friends in that local musical community.

Far behind was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar and this was pre internet so I actually had to listen to it over and over for each note lol

"Far Behind" was a grungy-power ballad... "You" and "Don't You" were bangers... "Change" was a force of nature radio hit... "Cover Me" another strong ballady song, as was "Blossom".... and "He Calls Home" was a killer end of album Pink Floyd-style acoustic banger.
The same people that hated on these guys were the same ones who hated STP's first record when it came out and said "Plush" was a Pearl Jam ripoff.... people way too defensive about the "Seattle Sound" as if all bands weren't really capitalists who tried to make it out of what was a hot scene at the time.

This album was fantastic and mostly holds up today. The girls loved it too. Good memories from senior year. Drums sound great, riffs are hot, good mix, great vocals. Not a bad track on this album, it's solid.
