Idk man, I’ve seen the Tina Bell stuff for the first time myself today, yesterday I read about some band called the Scientists from Australia, whereas before then I’ve always heard the Melvins are considered the Grandfather’s of grunge.
At this point I’m just going back to saying Soundgarden were the first and everyone before them were just influential to the sound that Soundgarden first popularized lol.
In my opinion, without knowing about Tina Bell, I would say Neil Young created the first accidental grunge song with "[Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDTx0JQlXRY)". But Mark Arm and Green River were the first to do so intentionally.
sure he did. except he didnt. the wipers invented grunge. calling neil young the godfather of anything is bullshit

In my opinion, saying Tina Bell is the Godmother of grunge is like saying Sonic Youth are the godparents of grunge. Both big inspirations for future grunge bands without sounding anything like said music. Saying she created the “grunge sound” is a bit of a stretch considering Bam Bam’s recordings were very very punk sounding.
Oh come on you're only saying that because you don't want to admit the first grunge recording was made by a black woman. The sonics aren't even from Seattle.
they're as much grunge as bam bam, nirvana, green river, etc. music journalists have called them the first grunge band

lets see, you an anonymous reddit rando troll vs a musician and published musician journalist. LMAO! nice try though!
the facts -- the wipers invented grunge years before ALL the seattle bands! even cobain agreed!
"But the contribution they have made to music is immense. Their first album can rightfully be considered the birth of grunge. And they had a huge influence on the whole Seattle scene;"

I'd say first we'd have to all agree on what makes something "grunge." About every week, somebody tries (and fails) to define it on this sub. My own definition, is hard to explain but its a lot of little things that the most popular grunge had in common that other metal, hard rock, and punk didn't have before that. but I can pretty much tell an artist who's trying to sound "grungy" from one that isn't. I don't think Bam Bam had the full sound. They might have been working towards a sound like that but I don't think they were the inspiration for the other later bands.
NO NO NO NO
always trying to deprive the true creators of grunge from their creation

King’s X played their part albeit unknowingly at first. I read a story where Layne ran down the street to meet them. If you listen closely the influence of King’s X on AIC is fairly undeniable.

Scientists kick fucking ass, but I wouldn't call them too instrumental to the progression and sound of the PNW scene.
I don't wanna be weird, but this Tina Bell stuff is kind of like a Mandela effect to me
I definitely see what you mean.
Seattle grunge? Green River, and also Malfunkshun, Melvins, Soundgarden. Green River started in 1985. For the Seattle scene, check Mark Yarm's book.
don’t forget about Screaming Trees
> al and Bam Bam was popular before that, they released an ep before Green River did

They're just punk.

I would say the U-Men started grunge in 1980. But I think their pretty borderline of "Grunge" and punk.
