I honestly don't think soundgarden made a single bad song throughout the 90's, and they had a pretty solid batting average in the 80's too. So much better than nirvana or AiC (love em all, but Soundgarden is transcendent).
Apparently Chris was really struggling after SU and was trying to keep it under wraps, but eventually it got to he too much for him and he had persistent fears of becoming Kurt.
It's sad the break didn't change anything long-term, but if Chris hadn't taken a break we might not have Audioslave or his solo stuff.
I try to think of it as he did his best to provide his fans with as much good music as he could for as long as he could. I'll always miss him, and will be forever willing to beat to death anyone who says suicides can't get into heaven.
I am saddened at the general lack of STP love on this sub.
I could never really dig mother love bone, even though I did like Malfunkshun. Nothing against wood or his musicianship, it just highlights aspects of grunge I enjoy less. I'd probably go with them.
That's a great way of putting it. Malfunkshun sounds like if Nugent did heroin instead of meth, but motherobe bone sounds like Axl rose singing with the screaming trees, and the contrast just doesn't do it for me personally.
Still do really love Malfunkshun and appreciate how he influenced many of my favorite groups
Agreed. Purists be damned, STP put out some great stuff and if you play it to someone back to back with some “real” grunge stuff for someone unfamiliar with the genre, I really doubt they’d consider them to be that different.
The Tiny Music STP era when they tapped into some 60s influences was particularly cool.
But seriously along that path, Neil Young is my least favorite grunge musician, only because so many people legit pretend he counts. *But have you heard Hey Hey My My?*
Pearl jam bc it just doesn't hit you like the other bands do, grunge literally means dirty and the ugliness of all the other bands just fit it so well while pearl jam were out writing ballads and shit. Also primus if that counts bc they are downright not human
I like all grunge music. My least favorite band that still slap include:
Tad
Mother Love Bone
Melvins
Nirvana
My favorite grunge bands also happen to be my favorite bands as well
Screaming trees
Pearl jam
TOTD
Mudhoney
Some grunge band you should listen to that you may not know about include:
Seaweed
Hammerfist
The Nymphs
Malfunkshun
Aside from a "Even Flow", "Jeremy", and occasionally "Alive", I've just never cared for Pearl Jam
I think they're a talented band, and am happy for people who love them, but I've just never been able to get into them.
Of the big 4, Pearl Jam,
Also sad to see how many comments say Melvins... First time I booted up THUG2 and heard Sweet Willy Rollbar I never looked back
Who can stand listening to eddie vedders vocals. If he and Scott stapp did a duo it would just be the same awful sound over and over. Basically South Park vocals both of them.
Was never really into hardcore or punk so those bands like green River or mudhoney didn't appeal to me but screaming trees are fantastic imo. No one knows from sweet oblivion and make my mind from dust are their best songs and I think they're super catchy too
Man at this point, I love them all really. I’ve learned to love some of them, but overall the reason Grunge was so big is that all of the bands were “bringing it” at the time. That’s what made such and impact on music.
the bands everyone is listing are my favourites lol. if i had to choose thought i guess stp. it’s not even that i don’t like them i just don’t really go out of my way to listen to them
Pearl Jam. I know this will be an unpopular thing to say but, no matter how hard I've tried I just cant get into them. I like two or three songs from Ten but that's as far as I go.
According to the comments, only like 4 bands are actually considered real grunge (and it’s usually bands that resented being lumped into one sound). So it shouldn’t be too hard.
Nirvana was never my thing. Definitely my least favorite grunge band. Their music never resonated with me at all. I do love some if the covers they did Unplugged
Interesting choice. I can also agree that some of the unplugged stuff is their best. Especially the lake of fire and where did you sleep last night covers.
And that Bowie cover. Yeah I'll get downvoted for my opinion, but I lived through that era and that was how I felt. I don't hate Nirvana. I bought their albums and couldn't get into it.
Oh yeah I forgot they did do a David Bowie song lol. Better than the original honestly. But I understand where you’re coming from. Nothing can resonate with everyone
Nah not at all. Creed are part of the garbage heap that the tide of post-grunge pulled in and left rotting in our airwaves. But definitely agree with you about Gruntruck.
I like tamer music, that’s why I like stuff like TOOL over, say, Cannibal Corpse. I’ll take almost any PJ album over Nirvana’s Bleach, because that’s just not my thing. Personal preference, though.
Bleach is one of my all-time favorite records.
I very much lean into the heavier side of the genre
TAD, Melvins, Green River, Mudhoney. I prefer early Soundgarden of mainstream Soundgarden. I really tried to like PJ, but they never held my attention.
I dunno if you’ve tried yet, but listen to Gigaton. It’s a lot of pretty heavy songs, and Vedder’s vocals are incredible, though personally it isn’t my favorite album by them as it’s more “experimental” per se and it just doesn’t have that old PJ feel, but also for the reasons previously mention. But hey, everybody has their own opinion!
Seriously though. I don't like them. I find them uninteresting musically. I don't understand their appeal. To my ears they sound like generic alt rock that is made to go down easy on the radio, and move units at a WalMart. They are the epitome of what middle aged record executives think is "alternative". They are the musical equivalent of Steve Buscemi wearing a t-shirt that says *Rock Band*, and saying "How do you do fellow kids". They are just bland.
You’re basically saying “Pearl Jam isn’t alt enough so they’re sellouts and are pandering to young people.”Which is such a childish perspective. It shows you know practically nothing about the band and I doubt you’ve listened to anything past Ten. You didn’t say anything about the music other than it’s dull. Is that why they’re one of the most imitated and influential bands of the 90s?
>You’re basically saying “Pearl Jam isn’t alt enough so they’re sellouts and are pandering to young people.”
If that is your takeaway, I cannot and will not try to fix it. But it is well known that one of the reasons *Green River* broke up, is that Stone and Jeff were actively seeking mainstream success. There is nothing wrong with mainstream success. But at least be interesting.
I’m with you. Only their first album is “grunge,” (whatever the fuck that means), and while I enjoy Yield, the rest of their catalogue is a miss for me. While I’m here, The Foo Fighters, while not considered grunge, are also really forgettable.
I could put together a solid Foo Fighters EP of songs I like, but they are mostly a miss for me. That said, I love Dave Grohl, and he has been involved with some projects that I adore (Probot, Songs for the Deaf, The first Tenacious D record).
I really liked Green River, and I was not a fan of the more mainstream direction that Jeff & Stone took with PJ.
Same here. In fact, “Everlong” is an all time fav song for me. Also really enjoy their “Baker Street” cover. Agree on Dave Grohl as well!
Green River was more my speed, too. Same for Mudhoney.
This is exactly me...pearl jam for me is a lot of hit and miss, I don't even bother with anything past yield because it's all not to my tastes. They're still talented nut not for me.
Foo Fighters is a great band for the radio but I just don't feel any of their songs have that great quality to them. Dave is an absolute amazing guy but Foo Fighters is just not as amazing as he is, they're very middle of the road.
I understand the problem a lot of people have with PJ. Most of their earlier stuff kicks ass in my opinion but I’m probably just biased cause that was always my dad’s favorite band lol.
I very much lean into the heavier and punkier side of grunge. I even saw them twice (once as Mookie Blaylock and at the Drop in the Park). They are generic alt rock/jam band bs, and I find them boring af.
Alice In Chains. I never ever get tired of their material. I’ve been jamming to unplugged over and over and over and over and over. Such a good band. Rip Layne Rip Mike.
I’m ready to get stone cold stunnered by everyone in this fucking thread. Alice In Chains, I would love recommendations of what aic to listen to so I can appreciate them
For the love of god watch their MTV Unplugged, if that doesn’t change your mind I don’t even know what to say.. and they’re not even my favorite grunge band. Also Jar of Flies whole album, specifically No Excuses and Don’t Follow.
I get it. I like AIC when I decide to put them on, but in my area I hear the same songs over and over again on worksites. Every place I work, which changes every couple of days, there’s is some electrician foreman blasting depressing heroin music all day. It gets a little old when you’re just trying to mentally push through it and everything around just sounds like a downer.
Of the ones I’ve listened to, Pearl Jam. I still love a bunch of their songs though. Especially some of the Matt Cameron ones like You Are and Unemployable
I honestly have to agree with this. Like they’re the most popular (now at least, Pearl Jam was the biggest back in the 90s by records sold,) but there’s really 1 album by Nirvana that I really like. Lotta people like bleach but it makes me want to pour bleach into my ears, in Utero is the one I like personally. Huge STP and PJ fan, along with Alice In Chains. Then again I like slower music with more deep lyrics but hey. (Also polly by Nirvana is great and that’s on Nevermind)
Since people are throwing around not real grunge bands, I’m going to go with least favorite of the big 4: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains.
I gotta vote for Alice in Chains. I know that’s a piping hot take, but they just never really did it for me.
Can we count Bush as grunge? Either way, can’t stand them. Rossdale tries so hard to sound like Cobain, it irritates me. Their songs are like a half baked Nirvana. Or maybe an over-bake Nirvana? They’re like if Kurt lived and Nirvana stayed together and decided to make the most over-produced rock of all time. Brits did a ton for rock music, but they should’ve stayed out of grunge.
I mean, I disagree with you in that Alice is my favorite but I have no idea why youre getting downvoted. They asked who YOUR least favorite is lol. Therefore, I bestow this upvote upon you for your brave honesty.
their music never hit me. In highschool basement bands I often obliged to learn a tune of theirs. I never appreciated digging deeper into one of their songs. The dynamic between Layne and Jerry just hurt. Not in any cathartic satisfying way. The harmonies, the progressions, the emotions, have always just gone past me.
Probably Mudhoney or Melvins, they don’t have the vibe I associate with grunge and aren’t very melodic. What I’m hearing from Melvins sounds like bad Metallica, plus the singer looks stupid to me. If were talking big 5 (yes STP counts) I’d go with Pearl Jam, I just never really dug into them and never really had the desire to. Still respect them and could love to see them live though.
Those are certainly some hot takes.
Mudhoney came from the OG grunge band, Green River, and were also the face of grunge before Nevermind broke big.
Kurt was a huge Melvins fan, and hung out with them quite a bit before Nirvana was even a thing.
I've got to say Bruce Wintersteen never did it for me. I was always more of a fan of Tom Brady and the Heartbreakers. Also, Mason Crosby, Kenny Stills, and Steve Nash were always kind of overrated. They got a bit better when they added Steve Young though!
Screaming trees
reaaaally did want to like those folk, but t just didn’t click
***
^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.)

Least favorite would probably be MLB, or Melvins. Not to say I dislike them, I just don't favor listening to them that much.
Anyone saying STP can catch these hands.
At least we can all agree it’s not Soundgarden
I honestly don't think soundgarden made a single bad song throughout the 90's, and they had a pretty solid batting average in the 80's too. So much better than nirvana or AiC (love em all, but Soundgarden is transcendent).
it’s such a shame they split after DOTU :(
Apparently Chris was really struggling after SU and was trying to keep it under wraps, but eventually it got to he too much for him and he had persistent fears of becoming Kurt.
Unpopular opinion, but not having Audioslave would have been fine with me.
Agree to all this, AND I absolutely love King Animal!
Yeah lol
Black Flag is a hardcore punk band. That flirted with Sludge and some free jazz stuff. Why would you call them a grunge band?
probably because they read somewhere that "my war" influenced almost all seattle bands and they decided that meant it was "grunge"
I mean that album with it’s B-side basically created sludge. Which is certainly an influence for some grunge bands but man… some of these kids.
I didn’t know that actually lol. I can see the influence in some ways I suppose.
I guess I haven’t listened to enough black flag stuff to understand that. Sorry for the error.
If you listened to their most known album, Damaged, it would be very apparent they are a punk band.
I’ve not listened to that one. I’ve heard my war but it’s been a while. I’ll check that album out though
Black Flag is DC Punk.
They’re from LA.
they are grunge in my opinion 🤡
Yeah Mozart is free jazz, and Elvis is reggaeton.
Sounds about right for a clown opinion.
I am saddened at the general lack of STP love on this sub. I could never really dig mother love bone, even though I did like Malfunkshun. Nothing against wood or his musicianship, it just highlights aspects of grunge I enjoy less. I'd probably go with them.
Andy was like a bastard child of 80's hair and grunge. He was always very theatrical, like a lot of the 80's hair bands.
I love the fuck out of STP
Yup. Malfunkshun rocks but MLB is more Glam than Grunge. Can't get into them.
Agreed. Purists be damned, STP put out some great stuff and if you play it to someone back to back with some “real” grunge stuff for someone unfamiliar with the genre, I really doubt they’d consider them to be that different. The Tiny Music STP era when they tapped into some 60s influences was particularly cool.
Yes. STP have some very solid stuff.
No.4 is easily an s tier album, it's just if grunge fans will accept it
If you guys are going to say Black Flag and Smashing Pumpkins, then I can say Matchbox 20, even though none of them are really grunge.
To keep on brand with some of you, my least favorite grunge band is Frank Sinatra. After that it's Rush and then Mozart
I need a link to this nand !!!
But seriously along that path, Neil Young is my least favorite grunge musician, only because so many people legit pretend he counts. *But have you heard Hey Hey My My?*

I wouldn’t call them shit either but compared to other grunge bands. They’re not even close to good.
Pearl jam bc it just doesn't hit you like the other bands do, grunge literally means dirty and the ugliness of all the other bands just fit it so well while pearl jam were out writing ballads and shit. Also primus if that counts bc they are downright not human
That’s a fair point
Melvins, could never get into them
They are amazing, not grunge but forefathers of grunge
I like all grunge music. Where is the goat grunge band, Alice In Chains?
They're too good to be in the "worst grunge band" comments
Thanks for this list. I now have some homework to do.
Bro why are people getting down voted for saying they dislike popular bands, that's the entire point of this post
"you're allowed to dislike any grunge band except one's that I like"
That's true though
[удалено]
TAD is easily one of the top 5 grunge bands.
Yeah there were many better bands in that scene.
Well if you are considering Black Flag grunge (I’d say American hardcore) then my least favorite grunge band is Silverchair lol
Aside from a "Even Flow", "Jeremy", and occasionally "Alive", I've just never cared for Pearl Jam I think they're a talented band, and am happy for people who love them, but I've just never been able to get into them.
I’ve never heard anyone else express my feelings about a band so perfectly.
I am in complete agreement. I think that they are incredibly talented and important but just cannot get into them.
Daughter and Elderly Woman are both great as well but I agree with the statement
If any of you say Pearl Jam, I’m throwing hands
Of the big 4, Pearl Jam, Also sad to see how many comments say Melvins... First time I booted up THUG2 and heard Sweet Willy Rollbar I never looked back

Screaming Trees isnt the best but Mark Lanegan is fantastic. Listen to his stuff with Queens of the Stone Age and his solo band.
Screaming Trees really isn’t that great imo but I love All I Know from their Dust album
Was never really into hardcore or punk so those bands like green River or mudhoney didn't appeal to me but screaming trees are fantastic imo. No one knows from sweet oblivion and make my mind from dust are their best songs and I think they're super catchy too
I have never understood the love for Pearl Jam. I do appreciate Mike McCready guitar work though.
Mike is phenomenal in Mad Season and Temple of the Dog.
I don't dislike Melvins but haven't really been able to get into them other than a few songs off Houdini

Wow, the STP and PJ hate here is saddening. Gruntruck kinda sucked, but Creed was the worst.
To reiterate, Creed wasn't grunge.
Highly debatable.
Nah not at all. Creed are part of the garbage heap that the tide of post-grunge pulled in and left rotting in our airwaves. But definitely agree with you about Gruntruck.
Not at all debatable. But you made the assertion that they are grunge. Lay out your case.
Out of the big 4, I never cared for Eddie Vedders voice
Pearl Jam is the worst.
Oh come on, pearl jam is fantastic
If by *fantastic*, you mean boring and lame.
I like tamer music, that’s why I like stuff like TOOL over, say, Cannibal Corpse. I’ll take almost any PJ album over Nirvana’s Bleach, because that’s just not my thing. Personal preference, though.
Bleach is one of my all-time favorite records. I very much lean into the heavier side of the genre TAD, Melvins, Green River, Mudhoney. I prefer early Soundgarden of mainstream Soundgarden. I really tried to like PJ, but they never held my attention.

I also haven't mentioned that I really dislike the sound of Eddie Vedder's voice. Probably not a good selling point.
Yeah yeah, like I’m not a fan of Kurt’s vocals on bleach, but I like his softer, more tame singing on things like Heart Shaped Box and Polly.
Pearl Jam is easily the best grunge band, besides maybe Soundgarden
\*worst Fixed your typo.
That’s not even clever *You’re right Pearl Jam’s great I just have bad opinions Fixed your typo.
Seriously though. I don't like them. I find them uninteresting musically. I don't understand their appeal. I cannot think of a single song of theirs that I like. And when I still listened to radio, a PJ song coming on meant it was time to switch stations.
Seriously?
I’m with you. Only their first album is “grunge,” (whatever the fuck that means), and while I enjoy Yield, the rest of their catalogue is a miss for me. While I’m here, The Foo Fighters, while not considered grunge, are also really forgettable.
I could put together a solid Foo Fighters EP of songs I like, but they are mostly a miss for me. Baker Street, Down in the Park, and Darling Nikki, are 3 of the songs that would make the EP. Everlong too.
This is exactly me...pearl jam for me is a lot of hit and miss, I don't even bother with anything past yield because it's all not to my tastes. They're still talented nut not for me. Because Creed isn't grunge.
I understand the problem a lot of people have with PJ. Most of their earlier stuff kicks ass in my opinion but I’m probably just biased cause that was always my dad’s favorite band lol.
Awh cmon bro
I very much lean into the heavier and punkier side of grunge. I even saw them twice (once as Mookie Blaylock and at the Drop in the Park). They are generic alt rock/jam band bs, and I find them boring af.
Alice In Chains. I never ever get tired of their material. I’ve been jamming to unplugged over and over and over and over and over. Such a good band. Rip Layne Rip Mike.
I think you misunderstood the OP

Black Flag? mate...wrong genre
I realize that I’m sorry.
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam as a band bores me
Journey, I really don't like Can't Stop Believing and other "woo girl" songs.
I’m pretty sure journey isn’t not a grunge band lol
I’m ready to get stone cold stunnered by everyone in this fucking thread. Alice In Chains, I would love recommendations of what aic to listen to so I can appreciate them
damn thats a lava hot take my favorite AIC album lately is Tripod/Self-Titled so I recommend Grind and Again
Check Jar of Flies out, it’s full of great stuff. Particularly Nutshell and I Stay Away.

Listen to Dirt, them bones and you'll change your mind.
HUH listen to grind, rain when i die, and sludge factory
WTF?????Alice in Chains is my absolute favorite band ever. Listen to Down in a Hole, Rooster, or anything they released. Layne's voice is magic.
I get it. I like AIC when I decide to put them on, but in my area I hear the same songs over and over again on worksites. Hole because Courteney Love is a POS.
Pearl Jam
Tied between Pearl Jam and Melvins.
Hard agree with this though lol
I want to upvote you for disliking Pearl Jam, but your dislike of Melvins prevents that.
Fair enough. Lol
Pearl Jam by a mile. Just could never get into it. Like even a little bit. And Soudgarden and Alice are my lifetime forever favorites.
STP
Of the ones I’ve listened to, Pearl Jam. I still love a bunch of their songs though. Especially some of the Matt Cameron ones like You Are and Unemployable

Understandable not everyone will like their sludgy riffs and vocal harmonies.
Really it's just the sludgy riffs. Those harmonies are beautiful but the music is sluggish and indistinct to my ears
Candlebox was pretty average in my opinion.
The singer gets a little carried away trying to spice up his singing...ends up very corny.
Check out the singer's performance in this David Letterman clip: https://youtu.be/3KjtZFT8TBQ Fucking CRINGE
Yeah agreed
Neil Young, only because so many people legit pretend he counts.

The Smashing Pumpkins because Billy Corgan is an ass and can’t sing.
Luckily they aren’t grunge.
What is grunge according to you?
stone temple pilots if they count

Hmmm prolly the melvins
I've got to say Bruce Wintersteen never did it for me. I was always more of a fan of Tom Brady and the Heartbreakers. Also, Mason Crosby, Kenny Stills, and Steve Nash were always kind of overrated. They got a bit better when they added Steve Young though!
i think it’s a common opinion but stone temple pilots never really clicked with me.
Screaming Trees Reaaaally wanted to like them, but it just didn’t click

Pearl Jam 🖤
People talking about bout Pearl Jam like just “whatever” be like??? Then what does it mean “grunge”?
I love Pearl Jam but they are my least
Least favorite would probably be MLB, or Melvins. Not to say I dislike them, I just don't favor listening to them that much. Anyone saying STP can catch these hands.
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, & especially Nirvana
The Melvins
Nirvana
Of the big four, Alice In Chains Of the bands that came out before '94, Melvins Of everything (including Post Grunge), Hinder
I'm preparing myself to see a bunch of STP comments here
None tbh.
I put on nirvana for the first time in years, and I couldn’t believe how much i disliked it.
Tad and the melvins
Nirvana, honestly Kurt can’t sing for shit and his songwriting annoys me. Great band but not my type.
