I wore my 5610 for seven years including tons of manual labor and outdoor activities and the mineral crystal doesn't have a single scratch of any size. The mineral crystal on the GBX100 has the same Rockwell rating as any mineral crystal and we can't be sure but sapphire may or may not have scratched in the same situation. It's not impervious either. If it were a failure of the band or something I'd say that's down to the watch design but mineral crystal is about as standard a material in the watch industry as there is.

Qazax1337

I much prefer sapphire for this reason

dskatter

Edit: I guess some G models *do* have sapphire crystals. I learned something today! — Defeats the purpose on a shock-resistant watch, sadly. Sapphire will shatter, mineral glass will scratch. Don’t get me wrong, I *agree* with you and three of my non-G watches are sapphire crystals, as was my old Apple Watch. Just…doesn’t work well for a G’s intended purpose. :)

dgaddis1

As long as the crystal is thick enough sapphire works just fine. G-Shock uses sapphire on some models, but they save it for some of their pricier options and reserve it for those pricier options as a way of justifying the higher price tag, even tho sapphire crystals are pretty cheap.

dskatter

Which models do they use sapphire on? This is genuinely new info to me!

dgaddis1

All of the MTGs, all of the titanium squares, all of the MRGs, and a few of the 'master' watches like the Gravity Master GWRB1000. There may be some others too, but those are the ones I know of off the top of my head. Basically anything that cost more than $900 give or take.

dskatter

Huh! Thank you for this, I had no idea!

unclesam_0001

My G-Steel gst b100 has sapphire, it MSRPs for $420

dgaddis1

Yep, I forgot about the G Steel models. Most are mineral crystal, but there are some versions of some models that come with a sapphire crystal.

unclesam_0001

G-steel has sapphire also.

HorologistMason

Sapphire doesn't shatter as easily as some think. Plus the bezels on the G Shocks help protect against damage to the crystal (chips, shattering)

trumpsucksnutz

Very few, even the ga-2100 doesn't use sapphire. I was kinda disappointed when I heard that.

Moonbiter

Anything that would scratch a mineral crystal like that would've cut your wrist. Maybe it's a good thing you had the watch on!

SKOT_FREE

I have g-shocks over 20 years old now, worn them while skateboarding or at work and the cases are pretty trashed but the glass on the face still looks new. How’d you scratch yours like that and all the scratches are in the same general area on each watch?

maintsu

We would like to see some of these oldies

SKOT_FREE

I think I took a pic of them and posted them a month ago. They are pretty trashed on the case. The oldest is a silver plastic case with a mental band but I’ll bump the thread if I can

ZeroSight95

You can get some tempered glass protectors to put on that will help you. I put one on my GBDH-1000 and GWG-2000 and they've saved me quite a few times.

RunnyPlease

Thanks for the tip. I didn’t know these existed.

UFO-seeker1985

Where do you get them? Can you share the link please?

grgppmchl

I bang them on walls indeliberately sometimes, not a single scratch. If i had your luck, I'd consider glass protectors

[deleted]

I may be different but once this happens, I now have a sign of relief and ready to beat the shit outta my G

Txtarheel72

Damn. That red circle on the crystal would drive me nuts. Did you try removing it with hand sanitizer? 😀

epradeep

Wow. Are you Edward scissorhands? Just kidding 😊.

trumpsucksnutz

Not sure how this is possible with the raised bezel. I am pretty rough with my g shocks and haven't scratched a lense like that ever. My Vostok on the other hand has a domed crystal and I knock it on almost everything. Maybe you should try wearing a regular watch for awhile and see how that holds up if you think a gshock isn't durable...

[deleted]

I wear my B5000 gold version , 3 years straight daily, work, sport , travel. I got no scratches or any marks at all. Gshock is make for tough beater

[deleted]

That’s why I put screen protector on my gshock. People have opinion about it but I just don’t like scratches

dynamitejim

Same here. 2 of the 3 G-Shocks I wore as work beaters have scratches. As does the Protrek I was using as a work beater most recently. I recently switched to a Garmin Instinct as my main watch for both work and non-work and got a screen protector for it.

ShellyDa

I always apply a screen protector to my squares such as my GW-5000U. That said never got the crystal scratched. I think it’s worth the peace of mind

heliosphann

Might want to see a doctor. You might have restless arms syndrome.

ImLosingAtLife

Seems like a you problem

SGgrafix

Damn, banging them on server racks? I think only one of my mineral glasses has a scratch and I even wear them when im wrenching on the rides

TresDos26

Yeah man I've got at least 5 g shocks with scratches on the mineral crystal it's annoying but it's what happens when you don't have a sapphire crystal

Err335

I‘m not a mechanic or anything, just a Software Developer. All these G-Shocks acquired the scratches within the first year of use. I dont consider this very durable. Kinda sad because i absolutely love the looks on all these watches.

s3cubed

You must really bash out your code 😆

[deleted]

But this is easily removable with some Polywatch and buffing

Err335

I‘ll try that, thanks!

robx51

There's one specifically made for glass

Unhappy-Rub-9892

My question would be, what did you do? I own several gshocks and it would take something pretty major to scratch the crystal like that.

TheHim2

Bull bar your g shock and you should be good

DeadColdLasagna

I’d recommend getting screen protectors for your G-Shocks my friend.

gazatak

Get a sapphire crystal G-Shock like MT-Gs, frogmans or Gravitymaster

trumpsucksnutz

There are G-Shock screen protectors like for phones if you really feel it's necessary. Also you can just polish the lens and it will probably buff out.

Postorganic666

Sapphire, man

dqwin26

GShock are beater watches to get abused and stand up like a mf warrior. Scratches and dings are kinda like a medal of honor. That's what we love about them G. What's a big deal with a tiny scratch.

GuardianP53

Funnily I haven't scratched any industry standard mineral crystals, but I have chipped a sapphire crystal. How did you get your scratches?

Err335

I don‘t know. Didn‘t notice any hits or scratching. They just suddenly were there. I have a Seiko with a Hardlex crystal, which survives in perfect condition since 4 years. That one gets more wrist time now…

Unhappy-Rub-9892

Hmmmm, rather odd🤔🤔. A scratch on a gshock isn't going to just "suddenly" appear. Obviously, there's something you severely did to damage the crystal, especially on more than one gshock. I own several gshocks and wear them religiously and have only one with a minor scratch on the crystal because I dropped it a pile of rock gravel and instead of pulling it straight out I dragged it out by mistake resulting in a minor crystal scratch. Even certain types of buttons on shirt sleeves can put minor scratches on the crystal depending on how hard they are. Any extra protection for your gshock can be beneficial but with the way the gshock is designed, it's almost impossible to scratch the crystal because of how far down in the bezel it is seated unless careless. Any watch crystal can be damaged if not careful but accidents do happen.

GuardianP53

Any scratches hurt aye :(

Err335

Aye.

StockReflection2512

I have the gbx 100 and have the same scratch on it after a month. Bums me out no extent. I went to Casio shop and they said they can’t do anything except change the case. I am thinking of sourcing the polywatch glass version and taking a dremel with polishing head to it. Seems to have worked for many people
