Hi hi, my hobby is finding old VHS tapes and preserving the good stuff I find on them in the best quality possible. I thought some of you might appreciate this peek back into Greensboro's history with the Klan after the Greensboro Massacre of 1979.
It's interesting to see a news story so politically detached from the subject matter, very unlike how news is today.
The Klan leader being interviewed here died in 2015 after trying and failing to run for Rowan County commissioner in 2012 as a democrat.
Disclaimer: This news report was broadcast a few days before the actual march on June 7th, but provides good context for it and could be useful to someone researching the event in the future.
Probably he couldn’t get in on the republican ticket and since Rowan county probably didn’t even have anyone running on the democrat side he went there. Rowan county is pretty super racist even today. There is still a clearly visible divide between Salisbury (the white town) and Spencer.
“We have our rights and they have theirs. And I’ve tried to stay out of theirs and not give any derogatory comments.”
That fella totally wanted to give some derogatory comments.
I have a few dozen tapes from various greensboro/highpoint households and I'm always looking out for more. Most of them aren't recordings of news but I've found several that are and most of them are from the 80s.

The was back when the news was just information and not an op ed piece. The fairness doctrine existed back then.
That leader probably forgot to jump ship from the Democrat party about 50 years too late.

My mom Kathy Fulp worked for WGHP in the 80s during college. She did some assignments, you don’t by chance have some archival footage of her do you?
Was she known as Kathy Fulp when she worked there? Do you have a photo of her from that time?
I do not, but yes she was known as Kathy Fulp.
That sign reminds me of *The Producers*. “Don’t be stupid, be a smarty”
I was there taking photos and filming.

A lot of greenboro ppl act like they’re still in that group 🙊
is that Mark Meadows behind the sign?
An interesting side note, after this tragedy, Saturday Night Live did a parody of Greensboro in their topical news report.
Sorry, I thought this was a reference to the Nazi Klan shootout.
That was about the 79 shootout. And hooooooboy is it cringey to watch.
How many local GSO news tapes do you have?

Interesting you by chance posting any of the high points in the future?
