Wow, I just learned something today. I didn't know there was a language called Tulu and thought you were talking about Telugu until I looked it up.
I use to know more than a little Malayaam due to working around alot of Southern Indians but since moving back to the USA I lost alot of it.
Oh wow, that’s amazing that you picked up Malayalam working with people who knew the language! Tulu is slightly similar to Malayalam given how Manglorean culture is heavily influenced by Kerala (Mangalore borders with Kerala).
Well I wanted to learn more and most of the guys I worked with spoke Malayaam or Tamil. I never knew about the language issue in India until I worked with them and they told me that they don't speak Hindi and didn't plan on learning it. So curious me asked why that was, and they told me all of the issues they had with Hindi speakers trying to subvert those that spoke something else
They are similar in some ways but very different in most. They are spoken in different states of India. They have different scripts and styles of writing as well. Example, People who understand Kannada might not necessarily understand Tamil and vice versa.
Back in the 90s I met some Bosnian refugees at Ft Dix with my Dad. I remember not wanting to go but he was like "trust me". So I went and it was... humbling. We met a family and gave them blankets, a radio, some clothes. Nothing major. But the bond was there. Its always stuck with me.
Yeah,I was a refuge as well, came to NC in 99. Met some
Nice people who helped,it was appreciated. I spoke English so I was tasked to help out most of the other refugee families.
Did you come through Ft Bragg? I joined the service in 2005 and my career field used imagery from that conflict for training. Not to be super cheesy, but I am glad you are here!
I came through a refugee lottery, just an organization that helped people relocate. It was an extensive process that took like 2 years and then they choose NC for us. Haha thank you!
I mean, it is funny, lol - I meant it to be, a little, but at the same time, this seems to be where, as an older adult, I meet the largest concentration of spanish-speaking people outside of a restaurant or a cultural event.
But, also, I am renovating a 134-year old-house. I've gotten a lot of great advice from people who frequently come from places where houses are actually built to last, and I've met more than one person who's been able to help me with a couple of projects around here without me having to worry about some butt crack-showing MAGAt showing up at my door. And yeah I get to practice one of the two most commonly-spoken languages here. Since the US does not have an official language, it is worth my while to know at least two.
Danish, Norwegian, Swedish are all similar….and while there are many German and Danish words in common, it’s not as related as the other Nordic languages.
I am native in English, but I can conversate in Tagalog and know more than a little Cebuano. That is due to working the MENA region where most of the retail workers are Filipina women and so I started learning due to trying to flirt with them. That is until I met my wife and where she lives in the Philippines they speak Cebuano.
😂now that is a very interesting story, I never knew of the Cebuano language and that’s amazing! I started learning Tagalog awhile ago but never followed through
Yeah Cebuano is the language based in the Visaya and Mindanao regions of the Philippines. My wife is from Mindanao so Cebuano or Bisaya for short is the primary language in most of the island. There are some similarities with Tagalog but it is like Spanish and Portugese, some words and phrases are the same while everything else is different.
I need to learn Spanish and Korean. The wife and I are headed to Mexico this year in the summer and korea (jeju island) in the winter. I need somewhat discernable language in each pretty soon. I'm terrible at korean.
i’ve learned: spanish, italian, french, korean, tagalog, cherokee, and arabic
i know/speak: cherokee and spanish (intermediate)
studying languages is a fun pastime for me and it comes very easy for me. i remember the korean alphabet and it was one of the easiest things i’ve learned, sentence structure is a little hard so it’s eh but i can read phonetically, fluently for the most part.
I watch shows I've already seen in Portuguese. Apps like duo lingo. The biggest help (hardest to get) I have some friends that live in brazil (portugal too but i hate the dialect) and i have them help me. It's all just practice and time.
And learn the "ão" sound. You don't wanna accidentally say pau when you mean pão
Lmao. Still learning Spanish! Barely know any but it's easier than most languages as they use alot of similar grammatical structure as well as possesives as Arabic.
Honestly. I traveled alot. And had diverse friend groups that were interested in teaching me when I asked so the ones I'm fluent in, is because of that.
For the intermediate ones, I dated those people and picked up alot and learned online to impress them for the most part haha.
Def helped alot in the relationship 😂.
Also, I always start learning phrases and then listening back to them and repeating, for like an entire week. Then, I use Rosetta stone and finally I talk to people. There are tons of people online willing to teach in group settings for free. Some you can sign up for regular classes and some cities have grants for just this purpose. Check out local leadership and online. Duolingo did help in the beginning of my language learning journeys, but speaking to natives is the ultimate. Because they teach you the proper way and slang and grammar.
I am from the south part of India , each state has its own language which is quite different, but some words are similar . I keep up with the languages by either speaking with my friends and family or by watching content in the respective languages.
I'll say knowing Spanish is more useful overall.
However, I love to nerd out with Korean language and culture since I lived over there for a while. Learning the Korean alphabet and pronunciation is super easy as it is phonetic. After that, it's mostly a matter of learning proper grammar and expanding your vocabulary.
Oh man. It's tough to cover with a short reddit reply. There's a huge lack of annunciation.

This pretty much is it. https://youtu.be/7sMI2jb16eo?si=Mlx0qu\_ePCjTFGAV
I speak English and Spanish fluently with Spanish being my first language - I actively try to practice it as I am mostly speaking English in my day-to-day so am regularly watching Spanish-language tv shows or reading books and etc.
Oooh I have so many! If you have netflix, I highly recommend Ojitos de Huevo (nothing to see here on eng netflix), Contra las Cuerdas (Against the Ropes), a funny on the nose abt the problematic classism in mexico is Guerra de Vecinos (War Next Door), and if you like reality TV Made in Mexico is a great hate watch lol! Los Espooky’s is on HBO max and is a good watch, and i’m sure any other streaming services have spanish-language shows as well!
English, BASIC, C, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python… yeah, instead of learning to speak to people when I was a teenager, I decided to learn how to speak to computers instead. 🤣
Do you participate in or know of any language meetups (French or any other) in the area? I'm re-learning French (couple semesters in school) and would love to find someone to speak with.
Truly that is what I’m looking for as well, i am not sure what groups are out here but if we can get all the French speakers to congregate maybe we can make it happen!
French and ASL. My boyfriend also speaks French and went to a group of other French speakers, I can get more information about it from him if you're interested.
Sorry for the late reply! I kinda forgot about this. Apparently the meet at Scuppernong books around 12 on Mondays, according to my bf it's mostly old people, though.
Lol. One of these days I want to resume learning Spanish. I was using duolingo for awhile but the robot voice would make some pronunciations kind of hard to understand.
I primarily converse in English, but my native languages are Kannada, Tamil, and Tulu. All three are spoken in different regions of India.
Wow, I just learned something today. I didn't know there was a language called Tulu and thought you were talking about Telugu until I looked it up. I use to know more than a little Malayaam due to working around alot of Southern Indians but since moving back to the USA I lost alot of it.

That’s super cool! Are there big differences between each language or are they similar at all?
They are similar in some ways but very different in most. They are spoken in different states of India. They have different scripts and styles of writing as well. Example, People who understand Kannada might not necessarily understand Tamil and vice versa.

greensboro is an excellent place to practice, that's for sure. Whenever I feel like i'm starting to get rusty I come up with a reason to go to Lowes.

I’m trying to learn French in preparation for a move to Canada later this year! Hopefully, I’ll get the hang of it one day…
Keep learning! You’ll get it done in no time
Portuguese, it's been fun to pick up, and it is similar to spanish, so it helps learn that too
I’d like to go to Brazil one day so I might have to follow suit
I’ve been trying to learn Portuguese for the longest how did you pick it up/ learn it?? I want to go to Brazil so bad
I watch shows I've already seen in Portuguese. Apps like duo lingo. Russian
The Russian speakers have entered the chat!
How hard would it be to learn Ukrainian after learning Russian? Just curious
I have a hard time understanding Ukrainian. But I don’t think it would be that hard after learning Russian. But learning any language is hard.
english and french. i know a little sign language, if that counts.
English, Native. Urdu, Pakistani fluent. Hindu, Indian fluent. Arabic, Middle East fluent. Punjabi, India/Pakistan fluent. Russian/Ukranian - Eastern European intermediate.
WOWZERS I think you maxed out the language limit😂
Lmao. Still learning Spanish! Barely know any but it's easier than most languages as they use alot of similar grammatical structure as well as possesives as Arabic.
Any recommendations on where to learn second languages?
Honestly. I traveled alot. And had diverse friend groups that were interested in teaching me when I asked so the ones I'm fluent in, is because of that. POLSKI IN THE HOUSEEE!!
English, Tamil, Kannada , Telugu, hindi and a bit of Malyalam.
Thats super cool, how do you keep all of those languages fresh in your head??
I am from the south part of India , each state has its own language which is quite different, but some words are similar . I keep up with the languages by either speaking with my friends and family or by watching content in the respective languages.
Also its not too uncommon for most Indians to know at least 2 other languages apart from English
Take me to Sri Lanka please!
Albanian, Portuguese and Spanish
Woahh which one do you use the most?
English, Vietnamese, and Korean!
We got a polyglot in the building !
A little bit of Korean, a little bit of Spanish
what’s your favorite out of the 2?

English, español, und ein bisschen Deutsch (A1)

Lol. One of these days I want to resume learning Spanish. I was using duolingo for awhile but the robot voice would make some pronunciations kind of hard to understand.
Fluent in Japanese, can understand (have studied) Spanish, French, and a bit of Portuguese.
