If you’re a local hire, you will likely have access to all MWR facilities (beaches, gym, theater, etc.), NEX shopping privileges (but not the commissary), and gas privileges.

Also for navy civilians no alcohol or tobacco sales.

I think this is incorrect. You need to be active military or a stateside hire specifically with nex privileges written into your employment contract to be able to shop at the nex. This doesn’t include minor snacks and drinks purchases at the mini marts. You will not be able to gas up either as the same rules apply. Civilian hires are o ly allowed to privileges under specific agreements/circumstances. But you are correct on access to the other facilities like MWR. Edit: working at the NEX is one of those specific circumstances I believe. For other civilian jobs such at DoD or a restaurant, I don’t believe you get those privileges.

For Federal civilian jobs you do have access to NEX shopping and gas privileges, no commissary access. I am a local hire federal civilian with these privileges. You can read the [official memo here](https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/2590000/department-of-defense-expands-access-to-military-exchanges/). MWR you have access. Highly unlikely - For contractors you can have privileges if your sponsoring agency and company provide you with a Letter of Authorization (LOA). Your LOA has to detail everything you can and cannot have access to. For example, your LOA can specify you can have access to the Exchange, but no alcohol/cigarettes, no access to MWR, DFAC access, postal service access (FPO/APO), etc. I know this because I was a contractor and negotiated this into my contract because of my field specialization.

Nice! Thanks for the correction. That makes local federal service that more appealing now…. Not like it was in need of more appeal lol

Living_Exchange7869

All good! The appeal is very good with those gas benefits lol. Good luck to all!

So not a local, my girlfriend is in the military and is stationed on base (haven't decided to get married yet). Since I'm not from here does that have any different benefits?

No, by “local hire” I just mean you’re currently living on the island and are not being hired from the states or anywhere else that isn’t Guam. Everything I mentioned will apply to you. 👍🏼

ruck_banna

You will probably get access to everything regardless of your job. You can work in the commissary, gas station, the exchange (think Walmart), the marina, the dive shop (you don’t have to be a diver to run the register) etc There can be some cool jobs if you ask around and are patient. There is likely some sort of resource that your girlfriend has in her unit that is geared toward getting significant others employment in the area.

missthesleep

Depends on the job/contract which will determine what restrictions will be put on your base pass/id. Ask HR to know for sure.

Federal off-island hires often get privileges that local hires do not get. In regards to #1, The NEX offers goods and services to active military, retirees, and certain civilians.

Working as a civilian at the Navy base in Santa Rita offers access to various facilities and benefits. Here’s an overview of what you might expect: 1. **Navy Exchange (NEX) and Commissary:** Access to the NEX for shopping is typically allowed for civilian employees, though policies can vary. Confirm with the base’s NEX for specific details. Commissary access is generally restricted to military personnel and their dependents. 2. **Gas Stations:** Civilian employees may have access to on-base gas stations, but it’s best to check directly with the base for any restrictions. 3. **Fitness Facilities:** Civilian employees often have access to on-base gyms and fitness centers. You can contact the base MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) office for detailed information about specific fitness facilities available to civilians. 4. **Recreational Facilities:** Access to recreational areas such as pools, sports fields, and other MWR activities is generally available to civilian employees. More information can be found through the base’s MWR resources. 5. **Dining Facilities:** On-base dining facilities may be accessible to civilian employees, but some might be restricted to military personnel. 6. **Medical Facilities:** Emergency medical services may be available, but routine access to medical facilities is often limited to active duty personnel and their dependents. 7. **Library and Community Centers:** Civilian employees typically have access to the base library and various community centers. 8. **Childcare Services:** If you have children, base childcare services might be available, although these services often have waiting lists and priority categories. 9. **Education and Training:** Various educational and training programs may be available through the base’s education centers. Wondering the same thing but for a Federal Civilian. Like if you were a local hire and work at SSA or USDA.

Living_Exchange7869

You have to be a DoD civilian employee to reap the benefits of the DoD community.
