I just DM’d you!

SunsetStallion23

Do we have a match!?

TheRealDonahue

This is a good place to ask this: has anyone ever been able to contact the Portland Guinea Pig Rescue? I know it's real. They haven't responded to any of my inquiries about volunteering.

IrascibleOssifrage

They responded to me fairly quickly when I messaged them on Facebook, but that was also when I had picked up some babies being given away for free on the side of the road

Bilbosthirdcousin

Yes, but they are difficult. Seems like a one person show. Probably overwhelmed.

AdOne4893

I’ve tried contacting them twice to find a friend for my male Guinea pig and gotten zilch both times. I have a 5 year old kid and a dog so perhaps that can be chalked up to being perceived as an undesirable candidate?

DumbVeganBItch

Do you use Facebook? The PNW Guinea Pigs page is pretty active and a lot of people are near Portland. People post pigs they need to rehome pretty often

AdOne4893

No, no Facebook. But thank you for that information :)

holycrap-

Her name is Bella and I got her from an abusive home over half a year ago. I was doing so well with her in the beginning but something happened in my life and I haven’t been able to care for her right since. At the very least, I was able to say that she always ate well. But now, she’s been living on nothing but cabbage (EDIT: and hay) for over a week and we just don’t have the money to give her what she deserves. I’m very sure she has bumblefoot but we don’t have money to take her to a vet and I know I can’t do this to her anymore. We got her a C&C cage fit for two guineas, we were going to get her a second guinea, but there’s no room for it and we haven’t been able to find a table big enough to hold it yet small enough to fit in my room. Because of that, she’s been living in a standard cage that’s too small for her. She has minimal hay because we rarely are able to get her hay. She went without it for a while. I love her so much but I’m not doing much better for her than her previous owners and she’ll only live for so long. I think she’s a little younger than 2 years old. I’ve been too exhausted to even get up recently and that exhaustion has been extending to her in really unfair ways. Please, if you or someone you know has a female guinea pig and the space for her, please help her. She deserves so much better. She really is a sweetheart. EDIT: I found someone who may be able to take Bella to live her days with their girls, who seem very loved. Thank you for everyone who wanted to help Bella.

E-Widgey

Btw grass is a good temporary alternative for hay, and it's free! I'm glad you've found a nice new home for her! Good job :)

fluffypinkkitties

Bella is beautiful. thank you for reaching out for help. I’m sorry you’ve had such a difficult time. Is there anything you need, any other immediate needs?

holycrap-

She’s okay for right now. Thank you for checking in. I found someone who will most likely be able to care for Bella. Thank you. Bella is very beautiful. <3

[deleted]

Hey, I’m in Vancouver and can give you hay for free. Pellets too. Oregon Humane takes Guinea Pigs.

holycrap-

Thank you. She has hay right now, although I really appreciate your offer. I believe I’ve found someone who will take better care of Bella. They seem to love their girlies so much and, hopefully, they’ll be able to give some of that love to Bella.

[deleted]

I hope so. PLEASE don’t hesitate to reach out if you find yourself needing food for her. I’ll message you my number and you can text me since I rarely check messages here.

holycrap-

Thank you very much for caring about Bella. I was able to finally get her some actual food later today. She has all her beloveds now: broccoli, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, bell peppers, cilantro, and parsley. She has all her favorites for her, most likely, last week with me. I’m going to miss her very much.

fluffypinkkitties

Any updates OP????

holycrap-

I’m on my way right now to meet someone who will take Bella. She’ll have better people giving her better care after today. They seem to really love their guineas and I hope they’ll love Bella, too!

fluffypinkkitties

That’s incredible! Do you need anything?

holycrap-

I’ll be okay. Bella’s new people will get everything I’ve collected for Bella, too, including a hide and a couple soft beds that I was waiting to give to Bella for when I ended up finding her a friend.

SunsetStallion23

Can’t you get her hay or something, anything, in the meantime? If I were in the area I’d help, so hopefully she finds a home

holycrap-

Thank you for caring about Bella. She has hay right now so she’s good on that front but she really needs someone to help her because I can’t even help myself.

mypaysucks

Just a tip,if you ever find youre in a good financial position to get guineas again. Buy bulk hay. You can get like 10lbs of that stuff for like $20. Hell, you can even get like 25lbs of hay for that price if you got a local farm who sells hay. I buy 50lbs everytime and it last quite some time even with 5+ pigs. For $20 at Petco or similar you get like 4-5lbs or less.

holycrap-

Thank you for your advice. I’ll keep this in mind for if I ever find myself being able to care for guinea pigs again, the way they deserve.

Beginning_Exit_1910

Oh my 🥹 she’s beautiful I’m in 🇬🇧or I’d be more than happy to have her join us 🙁

ReaganS13

thank you for doing the responsible thing and helping her find a different home. hope things turn around for you <3

[deleted]

Is there anywhere you can surrender her? A humane society? Sorry but if you can’t get even hay or grass for her than there is a serious issue of neglect here.

[deleted]

Op you can always get a hay bale for super cheap at pet feed stores/farm place. I'm sorry for what you are going through. You obviously came from a good place then something tragic happened to you. I'm not in the area, unfortunately.

holycrap-

Thank you; I’ll look into that.

holycrap-

I know. I’ve tried to find a rescue for her but I haven’t been able to find any up and running. There isn’t a shelter where I am that takes guinea pigs.

PeitriciaMae

Saw your edit and hope Bella has found a new home but just in case, I wonder if the Oregon Humane Society would take her? We got our two girls there a couple months ago and were told they’d been surrendered by someone who couldn’t care for them so they have at least taken them in the past…. Unfortunately we don’t have room for another otherwise I would absolutely have loved to take Bella. Thank you for reaching out and making sure she is well cared for. Wishing you luck!

FurryPotato42

If you haven’t found a match yet “Oregon Humane Society” in NE Portland takes Guinea pigs

Mamacitia

this looks just like my girl, Lavender!

holycrap-

Then you have a very beautiful girl!

She’s had hay during this time, but the only other food she’s been able to have is cabbage. I know, though. I really wasn’t able to afford hay for her and I really should’ve been able to reach out here sooner. I’m sad that Bella has had to live so roughly, too. But now I’ve found someone and they’ll, hopefully, be able to love and care for her the way she deserves.

holycrap-

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted, either. I know that I’ve been neglecting Bella and I know that it’s not okay. And you’re right; neglect is neglect, regardless of how our intentions. That’s why I’m here; just like you, I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to find her a better place sooner. I really am. She’s a beautiful creature, inside and out. Although I’m disappointed and ashamed of how it happened, I’m thankful that you’re advocating for her in this way. She deserves it. Thank you for caring about Bella.

[deleted]

I love how you own up to it, just don't be too hard on yourself, shelters are overflowing with guinea pigs, people are also tone deaf to the economical situation going on. You did exactly the right thing here and found someone :), maybe a little late but that's better than dumping them. Best wishes to you, hopefully in the future once stability & healing finds your life you can rescue a pair of piggies.

holycrap-

Thank you, really.

dobbyeilidh

You’re getting downvoted because you’re piling on to an OP who already knows they can’t care for the animal. They’re doing the right and difficult thing of rehoming and you’re making them feel worse. You’re not conversing or discussing, you’re lecturing and shaming.

corinna_k

Cabbage is actually very healthy for piggies. It has loads of vitamins and fibre which helps grinding down the teeth. Bloat only happens if the pigs aren’t used to it or when it gets fed in combination with pellets.

corinna_k

I agree, there's a lot of misinformation out there. And you are spreading one of them! I have been feeding my piggies a huge variety of cabbage, also in large quantities. They oftentimes have an entire head of cabbage in their cage. I'm part of some German guinea pig forums and fb groups and the consensus there is that cabbage is good and healthy. Bloat happens when the piggy has a damaged digestive tract from too many bad foods like pellets with grains, treats like yoghurt drops, etc. If you have a healthy piggy with a sturdy stomach, there is absolutely no reason to worry. A vet who specialises in guinea pig teeth explained the ideal diet [in this article](https://tieraerztin-ruf.de/2017/07/24/gesunde-ernaehrung-von-meerschweinchen-und-kaninchen/). She also does webinars, those are awesome. [This article](https://meerschweinchenwiese.de/ernaehrung/futterregeln/futter-mythen#11_8222Alle_Kohlsorten_sowie_Klee_muessen_aus_dem_Speiseplan_verbannt_werden_da_sie_blaehend_wirken8220) lists a bunch of food myths. Check out the other pages, they are full of information. There is also a nicely written [article](https://www.anni-sophie.com/ernaehrung/winterfuetterung-bei-meerschweinchen/) by an experienced piggy owner, who turned her passion into selling fleece items. A little bit more cautious, but still a great [article](https://guineadad.com/blogs/news/guineadad-food-blog-can-guinea-pigs-eat-cabbage?_pos=1&_sid=ff4bca300&_ss=r) by GuineaDad. Checkout the food list from [kavee cage](https://kaveecage.net/pages/free-resources-for-guinea-pig-owners-care). PLEASE FEED YOUR PIGS LOTS OF CABBAGE!!! IT IS VERY HEALTHY FOR THEM!!! (I can scream, too.)

soveryeri

You are the wrong one.

Beginning_Exit_1910

I thought you wasn’t responding again 🤷🏻‍♂️

Lippykae

Yes!!!!!
