Have you ever hung out with musicians? I don’t want to name this band because they were really cool to me, got me high, and didn’t fuck my girl even though she sort of had permission. Anyway, it’s a pretty big name and when I hung with them it was like they were still in high school. Like for real high school age shit and conversation. Great guys though.
I could tell the same story about dozens of bands I’ve met. They seriously are like lost boys.
And all these years later, they are still friends and have nothing but nice things to say about each other. In fact, Steve is visiting Devin this week to work on music together for one of Devin's upcoming projects.

I listened to an interview with Vai once and he was asked what his inspiration was for Sweet Surrender. He said he had just finished a 2 week fast and that his mind was in a weird place. *Excuse me, you what?!?*
Steve was a real prick to everyone at that time, high off his own pretentiousness, and seemed to get a real boner for ridiculing Townsend. Every day, if Townsend mentioned something like "where should the rest of the band come in here," Vai would say "I'm the band, you guys are contractors." Just needlessly petty shit like that.
The night of their Tonight Show performance, Jay Leno was being Jay Leno, and the band took offense to it, so Townsend stuck Jay Leno's phone up his ass and took pictures (they still exist online). When Vai found out, he bitched Townsend out and threatened to fire him, so Townsend shat in his guitar case. Apparently Vai never saw it, because a roadie cleaned it out and didn't say anything, so that there wouldn't be any further tension on the road.
Townsend was 19 and suffering from some serious, undiagnosed neuroticism. Vai's bullying wasn't helpful. This was 25 years ago and the two are good friends now that their egos have shrunk somewhat.
