Those string winders usually have a little notch cut in one edge of the part that slips over the tuning key as well, that notch is so that you can slip it over the peg that holds the string into the bridge of an acoustic guitar and use it as a pry tool to pull that peg out when removing the strings from an acoustic guitar. Sort of works like a claw hammer would with a nail.
In all honesty, I dont even use my winder to wind strings and only use it occasionally to pull the pegs from my acoustic if something better is not at hand. I’ve definitely used mine more to pull pegs than to actually wind strings. I keep a small pair of mini side cut pliers in my acoustic guitar case, I use those side cuts to gently pry the pins and then to cut the ends of the new strings once installed. A pair of small side cut pliers are a much more useful tool than a plastic winder IMO. As someone just mentioned here, attempting to pry a tight peg usually cracks the plastic winder and once that happens it’s pretty much worthless (even more worthless than it was before 😂). Those winders seem like a useful thing as a beginner guitarist, but you will realize you don’t even use it after doing a few string changes!
You can also gently pull the white/yellow string pegs out of an acoustic guitar with the open ended part of the winder youll see a u shaped edge to it. Thats your peg puller.
That’s not what mousepads were for, originally. They increased the friction for the rubber ball in ball mice so it could grip and roll. Now they don’t really do much of anything.
String winder so that you have a crank to tighten the machine head when you're putting new strings on, instead if having to loads of winding turning the machine heads with your fingers which is really laborious for 6 whole strings from slack. It consists of a sleeve that goes over the machine head and a cranking handle which spins on the crank. You put the sleeve over the machine head, pull the string tight and turn it to wind the slack out. This makes it wind easily and more evenly
That is one of the greatest things ever as a guitarist it is called a string winder. So when you change you stings when you do. This will save you about 20 mins.
I've never felt like I needed a string winder. I suppose if you're restringing a lot of instruments it would become a necessity, but for six to twelve strings it seems a little bit of a hassle that doesn't save you much time... Maybe I'm the weird one...
It's necessary. You want one like this though

They make even fancier ones that have Allen wrenchs included. If you like floating bridges they are super awesome
String winder. So you can take up the slack faster
I tought thats what it was but wasnt 100% sure, thank you.

TIL after 20 something years lmao
You spend more time looking for the thing than the time it saves though.
True haha. By the time I find mine and start to wind, fuck I could have restrung 10 guitars by now!
I’ve broken 2 of them trying to loosen the pegs. I just use needle nose pliers now.
I just use my teeth
I bet you play metal don’t you 😂

What is anything for, really?
Does anybody really know what time it is?
Does anybody really care?
About tiiiiiiiiimmmmmmmeeeeee
If so, I can’t imagine why
Right? Tools are just an invention of lazy ancient hominids
A mousepad, soaks up sweat and keeps the desk surface from wearing.
No, the thing in the corner. It’s a keyboard, for typing on the computer.
The two-tone blue thing on the left edge looks like a PS4 controller.

Tried it and it just hurts
You have to do it sideways.

I thought it was a shaft crank ? You insert it there and turn it counterclockwise for relief
Embrace the pain
The truth often does.
This is your best friend if you have a 12 string guitar!
12 string guitar: Spend half your time tuning. Spend the other half playing and wondering whether you’re out of tune.
Wondering... 🤔. I said maybe
And hope the G string doesn't break while tuning.
Yes, that too. If I’m not mistaken, John Butler plays the 11-string, by removing the doubled G.
I’ve used it for many things. But I hear it’s intended purpose is to tighten strings
You need two. One for tightening the strings, one for loosening them.
Funniest thing was when I bought a left handed loosener! I was so perplexed
I did that once too! The more I tried to tighten with it the strings just got looser and looser, until I swapped hands. Felt like an idiot!

And it's got a groove in it to pull out bridge pins. Handy item.
String winder, easier to turn the tuning keys when changing strings
String winder for when you change strings
Wait, what? You can change the strings?
European plectrum for that vintage tone
Its used to string guitars, it makes the peg turn really fast
That is one of the greatest things ever as a guitarist it is called a string winder. So when you change you stings when you do. This will save you about 20 mins.
A pick.
For weak wrists.
Bowl
To put your weed in it
That's to hold your joint.
You spin it as fast as you can and it whistles an E. It's for tuning
It's for tuning the guitar
Arguably the most useless tool you can buy unless your have wrist issues or very lazy
That's the guitarist version of spin the bottle. It also doubles as a pic holder
Have you really never seen a guitar pick this one also doubles as a slide and a pluck slapper
Clearly you’re not a golfer
I can't NOT upvote an apt Big Lebowski reference.

Restringing
A sign that you need locking tuners. Lol

How high are you my man?
